It was cold in the fields today.

Hana stood with Jokul and Starflower, holding the child’s hand as they stood before an old rock worn down by weather and time. Hana thought it’s about time they found a new rock for their grandfathers’ grave, seeing how badly this one was enduring the elements. Jokul, on the other hand, suggested leaving the rock as it were; that it suited the old fox’s own endurance.

It was Stars’ first time at the gravesite. They honestly didn’t know what to expect, but felt like they understood what it was about, at least a little bit. They had many questions they wanted to ask their great grandfather; ranging from “why is grandpa a rock” to “how come he’s all by himself out here in the middle of nowhere”, as well as what it’s like being a ghost, and if there’s any cool bugs down there. They were a little disappointed that they probably wouldn’t get any answers from him now, but figured they could ask another time when it wasn’t so gloomy.

Hana sighed, straightening their posture to look at the sky. It was a little later in the morning, and they had a light breakfast before making the journey all the way out here. They didn’t have anything else planned for the day besides nursing their melancholy mood, but they figured it was time to head back home.

“Small Dad…” Star began, after collecting their thoughts. “I wanna bring a rock next time we see Grandpa. That way, he has someone to talk to out here. I’ll try to find a interesting one, so they can have lots of interesting conversations while we’re gone.”

Hana smiled, squeezing the kits’ hand gently as they walked. Hana had already explained that their great grandfather wasn’t really a rock, but it seemed the kit had already accepted it as fact and wasn’t going to be convinced otherwise anytime soon. Still, it was a sincere thought, and that’s what counted.

“I’m sure he’d like that, actually…”

"But I digress." He gathered the wayward spirit hiding behind him in the curl of his many tails. "I am such as what you call me, a shephard for the spirits. I do not have a patron to report to. I am much too old to accept one. It feels beneath me," he chuckled under his breath. "Especially given I have my own attendees."

"But humans often see me a deity. Perhaps I am. However I am displeased with the title they bestowed upon me. It is hardly fitting."

He turned his attention to the spirit. "But this little one is quite new. And judging by its white core, it has not been tainted by negative energy so I am keeping a close eye on it until it can tell me more. I have been unable to communicate with it. It is unusually... silent."
