The time period I am choosing to compare to present day work is the Prehistoric Period. It really was a primitive time with no structure and a lot of knowledge from them was lost because there was basically no system or alphabet for them to track and write down what they knew. Their markings consisted of abstract shapes and animals. The paints that they made consisted of pigments from all sorts of natural sources including charcoal and iron oxides that were mixed with fat for the medium.
The present is so much better than during the Prehistoric Period. I am thankful that every language has their own version of an alphabet so they can communicate with one another through writing as well as speaking. Also the technology with computers and art as well as the types of paints we use. We have paints that come in such a wide range of colors and hues that it is incredible. I am very curious to see what the future holds for Graphic Designers.

This week we learned a lot about the twentieth and twenty first century. One of my favorite parts to read about was the progression of technology and motion graphics. It is amazing to see how technology has progressed so much. This is one of my favorite stop motion movies from Tim Burton which is Nightmare Before Christmas.

This week we learned about conceptual images and postmodern design. There are apparently three different types of postmodern designs; retro, new-wave typography and memphis. It was really nice to see all of the artwork for that time period which was actually not that far away.

I really wanted to focus this week’s journal on the company IBM. It is interesting because my Dad occasionally works with the IBM company and I didn’t realize that they are a very important company. Their original font was actually developed and trademarked as their own and it is called City Medium which was designed by Georg Trump. They are a computer company that always seems to be looking for new ways for technology.

This week we learned about The Bauhaus and new typography as well as the modern movement in America. New fonts were being made and are still widely popular today like the Times New Roman font which was made by Morison. Another interesting thing I learned this week was that the popular book brand, Penguin Books, was a company based out of London. They are also very popular in this century as well for children’s books.

This week consisted of the evolution of modern art. The reading seems to be a little easier because we are getting closer to the present time period for art. I think my favorite section was the propaganda art pieces in chapter 14. World War II was always my favorite war to learn about. And to think that it seems like it happened so long ago but it really wasn’t that far away. This is one of my favorite posters from that time period.

This week we learned about Art Nouveau and 20th Century Designs. It consisted of art nouveaus of Germany, France and England. Each had a lot of similarities and differences. There were many important people who contributed to these movements. Probably my favorite designs of these two chapters would be the designs from an artist named Alphonse Mucha. He created such beautiful, rich art pieces that amaze me.

This week was really interesting with learning more in depth detail of Graphic Design and how the Industrial Revolution really impacted it. I remember vaguely of what I learned way back in high school about it but I feel like it didn’t learn as much as I did with this week. There were so many things that were created and designed it truly is amazing because what kind of resources they had. One of my favorite sections was in Chapter 9 where the camera obscura was refined. I think how it was so interesting how the camera obscura had been around for centuries but finally someone came up with the process of keeping a permanent image. Especially with the cameras we use nowadays, it is amazing how far we have come.

This week had a large amount of interesting history that I had no idea about. I think my favorite Chapter was number 7 because it told many stories of all of the important people who impacted the graphic design history of the Renaissance period. My favorite section would have to be where they talk about either the “De Humani Corporis Fabrica(Construction of the Human Body) by Johann Oporinus or the Dance of Death from Hans Holbein the Younger. I find it so fascinating all of the detail that goes into the pictures and the stories that are part of it.

I would be lying if I said this week’s reading and quiz assignment took me a short time to do. That being said I have learned so many wonderful and interesting facts and stories about the beginning of graphic design. My favorite section has to be with the Egyptians. They really were amazing with their own stylized writing and symbols with their hieroglyphics. It was fascinating how they were so intrigued by death that they had their own rituals for the afterlife and stories of their Gods. They took great care with their dead especially the more “important” people. I would love to learn more about them and I am inspired to find more books in the Library about them. I am looking forward to learning more as we progress into the past towards the present and possible future of Graphic Design.
