2020 EMRA 25 Under 45 Influencers in Emergency Medicine Award
Dr. Ross Donaldson and Dr. Dennis Hsieh were recognized by the Emergency Medicine Resident’s Association as young Emergency Physicians who are changing the world and whose contributions embody the spirit of the specialty. Dr. Donaldson is being recognized for his groundbreaking work and innovation through WikEM as well as his extensive work in global health and innovation. Dr. Hsieh is being recognized for his leadership, teaching and innovation in addressing the social determinants of health and establishing social emergency medicine medicine as a field. Shamsher Samra, MD, MPH to serve as the Structural Racism and Health Equity Theme Chair at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA
He will be working together with all Block, Thread, Clerkship, Systems Based Healthcare and College Chairs to ensure a robust focus on anti-racism, structural and social determinants of health and health equity throughout all four years of the medical school curriculum.
His Primary responsibilities will include creating and supporting curricular elements that will help future physicians develop a clear understanding of, and the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to strongly oppose structural inequities, systemic and institutional racism, racialized economic systems (i.e. racial capitalism), microaggressions, implicit and explicit bias and anti-Blackness. The Chair will also guide students to attain knowledge and/or skills relating to advocacy, community organizing, critical race theory, allyship and anti-racist practices. Congratulations Dr, Samra!

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, led by Drs. Kabir Yadav and Juliana Tolles, is participating in the Clinical Trial of COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma of Outpatients (C3PO). With a commitment to engage and enroll underserved patients typically excluded from patient-benefit clinical trials, Harbor was one of the first sites to start enrolling, was the first public hospital to enroll patients, and still remains a top enrolling site nationwide. The C3PO study is part of the NIH Strategies to Innovate Emergency Care Clinical Trials Network (SIREN), of which Dr. Yadav is an Award Hub Co-PI, and Dr. Tolles is a Co-Investigator."

Congratulations to Dr. Denise Whitfield for being awarded a $10,000 ACEP Section Grant from the Pediatric Emergency Medicine and EMS Sections. Project Title: Managing Childbirth and Newborn Resuscitation Toolkit for the EMS Provider. Because childbirth is an infrequent yet time critical clinical management situation encountered by EMS, it requires a paramedic to receive ongoing training to remain proficient. Dr. Whitfield is developing three video education modules to address the management of 1. normal delivery, 2. complicated delivery (shoulder dystocia, breech delivery, prolapsed and nuchal cord and 3. neonatal resuscitation. The modules will be available for distribution as just-in-time training for EMS providers.

"We are proud to announce that Dr. Saidinejad and his team were the recipient of a large federal grant from the Health Resources and Service Administration and the Maternal and Child Health Bureau to establish one of three national centers for educational excellence for the Emergency Medical Service for Children Innovation and Improvement Center (EIIC). The mission of the EIIC is to reduce child and youth mortality and morbidity from illness and trauma through advancing knowledge and research.
Our center at the Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation at Harbor-UCLA will lead content curation and creation in the form of topic-based resources (toolkits). Along with the two other centers, Baylor School of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital and Yale University School of Medicine, the EIIC award totaled $10 million. This is a great accomplishment for Harbor-UCLA and the Lundquist Institute with significant national impact. Congratulations!"

The California Violence Intervention and Prevention Program awarded $1.5 million to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and the Lundquist Institute
This funding will expand the hospital-based Violence Intervention Program and Trauma Recovery Center at Harbor-UCLA. The funding will allow for the creation of a summer program for at-risk youth, the hiring of more violence intervention workers and additional funds to support patients who have been the victim of intentional trauma. This work was lead by the Emergency and Trauma Departments by Drs. Shamsher Samra, Dennis Hsieh, and Vincent Chong.
