Thanks for reblogging my shitty pictures you guys. Like some of them are good but a lot of my LFS pictures I don’t really try and they still get notes anyway.

Sometimes algae blooms/bacterial blooms ate very important to a tanks ecosystem (sounds like you know your stuff though). It could have happened when you cleaned the algae bloom. I hope he/she gets better soon. Definitely a quarantine tank but try not to do 100% daily water changes. Keep it to 25 to 30 percent.

Calling for help!
I have no idea what has caused this. His tank is right next to my other two betta tanks, water is fine, filtered, heated, no chance of soap or other chemicals.
There was an algae bloom that I removed and after that his health started going downhill really fast. He first just looked like he had some extreme clamping, maybe some finrot. This is day two. In case you don’t remember what he normally looked like here’s a couple of older photos

I asked kai-ni about it and she suggests making sure all the water parameters are right and putting him in a QT tank to see if he gets better and checking for toxins or anything in the tank. I’m going to do that, but does anyone else have ideas too?
I’m really worried. He refuses to swim (who would blame him, it must be hard), eat, there’s barely any gill movement, and he can’t stay horizontal if he tries to swim, just vertical.

Night of the Oscars
by: Nathan Hill
For many in the hobby it’s the ‘coming of age’ fish that signifies devotion and enthusiasm. For others it’s the nightmare that eats everything in their community tank and then demands a bigger home!
However you view them, Oscars are amazing. With almost canine-like recognition of their owners, the brass to tackle a hand invading their aquarium and usually an eye on their own interior design, these are classic character fish that everyone with the appropriate facilities should dabble with at least once.
They’re surprisingly hardy, which helps explain their popularity, and, compared to some other big fish, they’re more reserved in overall size. In a small tank, this fish will soon outgrow and cost you more money — but it won’t do so as might a Pacu!
Oscars are South American and comprise two species. The common Oscar is Astronotus ocellatus, but there’s also the rarely seen Astronotus crassipinnis, a slightly smaller, darker fish. Given their trade scarcity, you could be waiting a long time if you want one.

10G update.
Really love how the java moss is getting out of control (center).  Pellia (right) is tightening up within the log.  The anubis should be attaching themselves to the wood via their root system shortly and that should solve the problem of them constantly floating away.  Moved all the blyxa to the left and crypts to the right.
Can you see the loach attached to the front of the glass (lower left)?

Biotop Riparium update! FINALLY
1. This is a Marina s10 filter, which is brilliant because it has a telescopic pump feed allowing it to reach all the way down into the water. This tank is in my bedroom and the constant splashing from the long drop was killing me, so I stuffed some filter sponge in there and IT IS AMAZING. Silent filter! It looks super dumb which is why I am now trying to grow moss over it. This is day one, we’ll see how it progresses!
2. The first planter you can see in pic 1 contains babytears and peace lilies. This second one holds java fern, an unidentified aquarium plant I found at my lps (the one hanging into the water) and a marginal plant I got from the garden centre. I lost the label; all I know is this is emersed form and it can be grown under water.
3 + 4: A lot of the plants I originally planted either rotted to death (the garden-variety babytears) or went through a serious rotting period as they switched to immersed forms. I’ve definitely learned a lesson about buying emmersed plants! I grabbed this hydrocotyle at the lps along with a mystery crypt. Much better!

Tank maintenance getting you down? Teach your fish to clean up after themselves.
Jock the octopus, a star attraction at Scotland’s Loch Lomond Aquarium has learned to clean the glass on his own aquarium. He was apparently intrigued when staffers would clean his tank, and one day took over the task. Jock has become such a neat freak he even cleans up after dinner, stacking discarded crab shells in a pile.

So. Remember that Fluval Edge I got for free (minus filter and light). Ya. That’s the one. So ive narrowed down my choice of canister filters for the tank. It’s between a ZooMed 501 nano canister filter orrr a Finnex Px-360 compact canister filter. Both have good reviews and...
