Fieldwork #10
The Biography of a Mr. Good Bar” The Mr. Good Bar was introduced in the year of 1925 in the United States of America by The Hershey Company. Mr. Good Bar’s ingredients are milk chocolate, sugar, cocoa butter, chocolate, nonfat milk, milk fat, lecithin, salt, PGPR(EMULSIFIER), Vanillin(ARTICFICALFLAVOR), and peanuts. Milk chocolate is prepared by mixing chocolate with milk ingredients and sometimes a sweetener, such as sugar. Sugar is also referred to as monosaccharides which includes fructose, and galactose. Cocoa butter is fatty acid composition, including palmitic, stearic, oleic and linolenic acid. Cocoa better also obtains cocoa beans, which is dried and fully fermented seed of Theobroma cacao. Chocolate is liquid or paste that is produced when cacao nibs are finely ground. Nonfat milk consists of milk with fat that has been removed. Milk fat is the fat that occurs naturally in milk. Lecithin is a substance found in the oil component of certain plants that acts as an emulsifier, to prevent ingredients from separating. Salt is a natural flavor enhancer and preservative. Polyglycerol polyricinoleat is an emulsifier used to keep ingredients from separating. Derived from the castor bean oil and often used to improve processing characteristics of chocolate. Vanillin is an artificial ingredient obtained from plant-derived materials providing a vanilla flavor. It is also made from wood pulp. Peanut is a legume crop grown mainly for its edible seeds. Peanut grows below ground and are planted in the early spring. Peanuts grows best in calcium rich sandy soil. The working conditions of those who produce cocoa receive low income which leads to serious violations of human and labour rights on cocoa farms. Because of their poor income, farmers cannot pay sufficient salaries to the workers and provide them with acceptable accommodation and health care. over 200,000 children are working in fields on the Ivory Coast to produce my favorite dessert. Some are earning a very meager paycheck to help support their families, while others are trafficked and sold to farmers for free labor. These children are typically between the ages of 12 and 16, but reporters have seen children as young as five. These kids work from six in the morning well into the evening, using chainsaws, machetes and knives to clear forests or cut down cocoa beans. Most of these laborers have never even tasted the chocolate that they work so hard to produce. Nearly all cocoa coming from origin countries is sold through the market. Cocoa beans are directly brought to the markets by the farmers. Small traders buy cocoa beans directly from farmers. In a second stage, small buyers sell the beans to wholesalers, who in turn will re-sell them to exporters. The prices for chocolate are driven, for the most part, by the commodities market, which sets the price based on supply and demand levels and can result in varying levels of volatility on commodity prices. Overall, the greatest price factor is the price of cocoa, which tends to drive price hikes in chocolate. Fair trade is the international corporations dominated by the chocolate trade. Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. The chocolate trade is regulated by the Trans Fair, a third-party nonprofit Fair-Trade certifier, regulates working conditions for chocolate companies that want to guarantee their chocolate is harvested under ethical conditions. Chocolate bars can be brought many places such as, rite aid, Walmart, Walgreens, gas stations and many more. The profit the store owner makes on one chocolate bar is based on how much capital is given to produce a bar of chocolate. If one adds up all the cost of production and the labor and amount of time given to create one. From this point think of the right amount to add for it to be your profit. The profit should be fair enough for you based on your computation, but don't overdo it because you won't have any customers if they don't see that the price fits the product.

Fieldwork#9
The theorist I will be focusing on is Karl Marx. Karl Marx Theory is based on the capitalist stage of production. The stage of production consists of two main classes, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. Bourgeoisie are the capitalist who own the means of production and the proletariat are the working class who are the laborers. This theory clearly asserts that one’s position in a class is based upon one’s role in the production process.
Within the article “Why the ideas of Karl Marx are more relevant than ever in the 21st century” it gives insight into capitalism and how one’s status is very important. At the world fair of 1939 in New York new technologies were introduced but also the idea of middle class leisure for those effected from economic depression and the European war. The Futurama participated in visions of transformed landscapes. This was a way to reinforce capitalism. During the second war capitalism was a success. The new technologies as I mentioned previously were in the process of being built by American workers. Problems began to occur due to class compromise, class struggle, and frosted economic growth. Exploitation and oppression continued simply because the system was to powerful. In the 1970s with the Political Aspects of Full Employment, high rates of employments and welfare state protection became a demand of the middle class for they became reliant of this. Even during the bad times capitalist had the upper hand, “An emergent neoliberalism did curb inflation and restore profits, but only through a vicious offensive against the working class”. The 2008 recession really put a damper on the middle class. For years capitalism has been undermined Americans have worked and worked for the higher authority. Paul Krugman attempted to give ideas about how to help the “American life”. Krugman ideas are the reduction in work time, the decommodification of labor, and ways in which advances in production can make life better. This is still capitalism because they still have to work unlike those above them. “Here in the 21st century social intellectualism shows its strengths: a willing to present a vison for the future, something deeper than mere critique”. Meaning that false hopes are given to the middle class. Marxism in America needs to be an intellectual tool for the mainstream commentators as apolitical way to change the world.

Fieldwork #7 Interview Analysis
What is the ideal meaning of sex and gender? Sex refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women. Gender refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women. Here in the 21st century the concept of gender and sex are beginning to change.
After watching a couple of the videos posted one can observe the change in generations overtime. For instance, Aubrei Perry states in his video that now in the year of 2018 people do what they want as far as sex and gender. This meaning that there can be multiple genders and that it doesn’t matter if one is gay. Mr. Perry also stated that he feels that there are downfalls to gender simply because if one id gay he or she will be criticized by Christians. Teai Early and Jayson Pinnock also agree with some of the things Aubrei Perry stated. Teai and Jayson both think being gay is normal, and that there are multiple genders.  Ms. Early also agrees with Mr. Perry and his statement of gender downfalls due to judgement. Meanwhile Jayson does not, he does not believe that there are any downfalls to any gender.
Taking it back to the concept of gender, Ryan (thenoitulove) believes sex is related to gender. For one is born either as a male or a female then nurtured into to societal characteristics that go along with either sex. Ryan also states, gender influences one’s life decisions. In her case she is the only female in her family and is held to higher expectations than her other siblings. Therefore, she is under pressure to be successful and to please her parents. She also made a point that gender is important due to the fact that we as women fight for equality every day.
In this new day and age, we have many people who are neutral, who do not discriminate against what is now being coming of the world. In support of this we have Shanelle Smith. Ms. Smith is okay with the idea of her child having a sex change if that’s what he or she wanted to do. She was her child to be free spirted and feel comfortable in their own skin. Shanelle also believes that both men and women may get their nails down at the nail salon. It is okay for mean to groom themselves just as women do. Ms. Smith also brings up that women are more sexualized against than men. This could be so only because of how some women dress today. In addition, she also feels it is okay for men to wear women clothing, for its all about what makes them feel comfortable.
In summation, those that were mentioned throughout this paper demonstrate how different things are now in the 21st century. We see how homosexuals or feminine men are not always seen as outcast. It is becoming normal to see such things on an everyday basis. Just as homosexuality is normalized, the idea of multiple genders is as well. Over the years the idea of sex and gender has changed and most likely will continue to do so.

In-class Assignment
1) women roles in the army
2) Women playing “male” sports
3) Women obtaining male jobs
4) Men in the female work field
5) Men wearing female clothing
6) Men being emotional
7) Black women having attitude problems
8) Men wearing make up
9) Women wearing male clothing
10) Men mannerisms
Due to society now and days gender roles have been switched. In the old days women were the nurturers and men the providers. Today women do just s men do. In my household the males and females are both the providers and the nurturers. Therefore what ever needs to be taken care of gets taken care of.

The squirrels in this picture represent individual racism. For the black squirrel has made an internal decision that he or she does not like the white squirrel because of his or her color. In support of this, this is how it was during the time of the Jim crow laws except it was the whites treating the blacks like they were outcast. The whites would not do anything that involved the blacks.

This image is a prime example of white supremacy. It provides a visualized thought of how whites are viewed compared to the blacks. Whites are always viewed as higher than the blacks. For example, during the time of slavery whites would own the land that the blacks worked on.

This picture of different skin color emojis demonstrates the concept of race. They show the idea of two races but also that there is race within race. For instance, the three sets of emojis on the right-hand side consist of different shades of black. Therefore, they would be labeled as light skin, brown skin, and dark skin. Although they are one race they still have different categories within their race.

FieldWork Assignment #5
“The Family Tree Essay”
What is the out of Africa theory? The out of Africa theory is the African origin of modern humans. Spencer Wells is conducting a study to retrace humanity’s journey. He suspects that we all have descended from Africa. No matter where we say we are from and how we appear, he believes we are all from a small group of Homosapiens in Africa.
Dave’s lineage supports the out of Africa theory. Although Dave considers himself African American, he is aware that he has ancestors from Ghana and possibly other places. Some of Dave’s ancestors were traced back to the icy slopes of Central Asia just as about 50% of all European men were. Dave’s DNA was also traced back to Tajikistan along with the rest of the world. The Climate began to shift from cold to warm followed by grass lands from the middle east. This caused the people to expand further away from their homes. The ice age induced a dry spell in Central Asia resulting in the grasslands emitting outward. Dave’s ancestors flanked left to “M173” towards Europe. Once they arrived they had to adapt to their new environment and develop cultural advances to survive. Despite the fact that Dave’s ancestors trace back to the early “European Trek”, he still does not look European. Wells believes that one of Dave’s ancestor’s might have father a child of African descent. Hence this could be why Dave does not look European.
In summation the out of Africa theory has been proven to be true throughout the entire video. Just about everyone who took part in the study ancestor originated from Africa. Therefore, they all are connect in some way, just as Dave and George. George’s ancestors were the first to enter Europe, where as Dave’s ancestors trace back to “European Trek”. No, they do not look anything alike, but they do share DNA. Even though we may appear differently, we all stemmed from a group of Homosapiens in Africa.

Fieldwork Assignment Chap.4
“Language and Gender in the Classroom”
For this fieldwork assignment I decided to observe my sociology of sex and gender class. This is a regular 50 min class that meets three times a week. There are about 20 students who attend regularly, 7 males and 13 females. I decided to observe this class due to the fact that we do a lot of discussion in this class. On this particular day in class we discussed how roles in society are beginning to change. Although the males are outnumbered they speak up quite often but not as much as the females. The males spoke about half of the amount of times the females spoke (25 to 30). This was expected simply because there are more females in this class then males but also because the topic more so spoke to the females then the males. Each person who spoke, spoke for about 20 seconds using about 10 to 15 words. There were a couple differences in the manner that the males presented themselves than the females. The males spoke with a little uncertainty as if what they were saying was not accurate or cannot be proven. The females on the other hand spoke with passion and confidence. Once everyone who wanted to speak spoke the instructor took in all they said and posed a question to both the males and the females. The question was to see if in some instances males and females would be able to agree with each other on why they think roles are beginning to change. The instructor does not really call on people to speak, it is more so a free discussion. Although our instructor is a female she is open to whatever anyone has to say. If she disagrees with anything anyone has to say male or female she states it in a respectful manner. My instructor encourages everyone to speak openly.

FIELDWORK ASSIGNMENT CHAPTER 3 “MAPPING A BLOCK”
The location I have selected to map is the gymnastics room inside of Vare recreation center. Vare recreation center is in South Philadelphia. At Vare recreation center they have a gymnastics program where they train gymnast to compete in different types of gymnastics competitions. I chose this particular place simply because I used to be a gymnast myself. I used to train in this very gym for over 10 years. My senior year I decided to take a break so that I could really focus on my school work and prepare for college. This weekend I went home and decide to observer what I left behind. After spending a couple hours in this room, I had noticed a couple of infrastructures with the conditions of the equipment and the building. The ceiling has multiple cracks in it, the hooks that are helping keep the bars stable are beginning to lift, and that the springboard for the vault is very stiff. Looking at all that I realized that they need to upgrade their facilities. I also noticed the peaceful atmosphere, with all the instrumental music playing for the floor routines. The environment was friendly with the coaches, gymnast and their family all getting along. Another thing that I also noticed is the fumes in the air, it smelled like sweat and feet. There is one thing I believe I missed though which is the gymnast will to do what they are doing. I did not have a chance to ask them why they decided to do gymnastics. Some of the gymnast worked like they really wanted to be there, and others did not. The next day I went back and noticed that there were very few gymnasts there on the Saturday. This is because the coaches split the competition levels up so that they could work with each level closely in order to make any changes or improvements that are necessary. During the week there are very many gymnasts in the room, for they have class back to back. No matter what time you go during the week it is always a lot of gymnasts in sight. This observation really opened my eyes to the things that I have not realized a couple years ago and just my observations skills in general.
