Due to a lull at work, I found myself with some free time.

So I decided to 3d model a furby because I couldn’t find a decent one online.

It came out ok in the end. But the process came with quite a bit of nightmare fuel.

I first did as much as I could without having to touch the hair sim. I had no idea how to do hair sim.

But I “luckily” found a quick hair sim button in blender. So that was looking quite nice. However I was a fool. I hadn’t yet touched any sliders on the hair particle system. And i still needed to add colour.

This should have been my first warning. I had to hide the face plate, so i could remove some of the hair bits that were clipping it. I wasn’t prepared.

Then I decided I wanted to have another bit of light hair on top. simply add a square under the hair and press the hair sim button.

simple.

right?

I don’t know exactly how I managed this, but somehow i had made the particle system use the data from the gravity sim to generate more hair.

I made the mistake of zooming out.

My computer didn’t like that. The hair, It just kept going, but the more I zoomed out the more my computer slowed down. So this is as far as i was willing to push it.

After fixing that issue I put a bit more effort prettying the model up. First I added colour to the faceplate and its different parts, then I cooked up a quick and dirty procedural texture for the eyes.

finally I made a front hair sim for the white belly, this led to another problem. at some point the baked physics started getting…

weird.

no mater what I did the hair would just start growing a few frames in.

I tried everything I could! I scrapped the physics bake, I trawled through all the particle systems sliders. I changed numbers randomly. I even did a full uv unwrap, which I had been avoiding. nothing fixed it.

I really didn’t want to end up with something not a furby at the end of all this work. so i kept looking for a solution.

Then i found out it animated.

In the end I just saved the file (I’d realized I hadn’t saved once up until that point. almost had heart attack when it froze for a few seconds while saving), then closed and reopened blender. Of course the old, “turn it off then on again” worked perfectly.

So there you go, I now have a slightly cursed furby 3d model.

This adorable little guy arrived yesterday! His name is Beeeny bc he's bean shaped. He came all the way from the UK! I saw his mischievous face and had to have him, despite the awful shipping cost lol. I also got yet another cow OuiOui 😂

My wrist is busted and I haven’t been able to draw much but I can design things with circle tools in Photoshop! So here, have some pretty sparkly eyes for your furbs :D I quite like the blue, purple and teal personally. These are edits of a design I’m thinking of using some day, but I have no plans to use these palettes. If you use them, neat! I’d be honoured to see how they look on your furb.

BTW heres a psa on the physical differences between a furby boom and a “2012” furby!!!!

note: not all 2012s have the hair tuft, and not all booms dont!!

furby booms and 2012s were released within a short span of time of each other, with 2012s coming first and booms arriving shortly afterwards in an effort to rebrand. theyre often referred to with both names interchangeably, but if youd like to know the visible difference, here it is broken down into three parts!!

1. booms have holes in their ears, while 2012s dont. their ears are both manufactured with the same bendable, slick material that Defies paint (seriously, dont bend their ears after theyve been painted. itll crack and peel right off 😔), but the later booms include shaped holes that the furby connects would end up improving on.

2. booms have more complex faceplate moulds, with jagged points that resemble fur on them, in comparison to the more simplistic rounded faceplate of the 2012. the 2012s definitely took more directly from the 1998s in this feature, despite both new models refraining from extending the faceplate around the beak- the connects would go back to the rounder shape around the eyes but continued to keep the bottom half of the beak free

3. booms feet are constructed from hard plastic, while 2012s have sewn feet more similar to the 1998s, although with a different fabric and shape

and thats pretty much it!! booms and 2012s also tend to have different fur textures, with 2012s favoring a softer fabric that also tends to wear down more easily and clump, and booms favoring a higher quality but rougher fur that mimics the 1998s texture more closely. booms took advantage of more patterned faux furs, which is how you get slapping designs like the waves boom and more niche looks like the holiday sweater boom. however, the fur isnt the first thing you should look for when trying to distinguish them.
