The Beginnings, History & Event: Biketoberfest
Since 1992, the Biketoberfest rally has been held in Daytona Beach, Florida. On this, the 25th anniversary, we’re proud to reflect on the journey from our humble beginnings to now. Founded by Janet Kersey – the “birth mother” and Georgia Turner – the self-proclaimed “mid-wife” the rally was first called the Daytona Fall Tour. It wasn’t until 1993 the official name “Biketoberfest” was introduced to motorcycle enthusiasts around the country.
This year, on the weekend following Columbus Day, we expect to attract more than 125,000 bike lovers on Daytona Beach. When the Daytona Fall Tour kicked off in 1992, it attracted roughly 15,000 people.
From October 19th to the 22nd, more than one hundred thousand bikers, motorcycle enthusiasts, and curious travelers will enjoy the immaculate fall weather, the sunshine, live music, and watching bike pros compete in Daytona International Speedway’s motorcycle races. How much have we grown?
Attendance for this annual bike rally has been steadily growing, this year we expect that trend to continue, challenging the notion that Biketoberfest is the “little brother” of Daytona Beach Bike Week’s spring event.
The festival where motorcycle manufacturers are proud to unveil new models and introduce prototype models as well has taken on a life of its own.
For years, local merchants have called for Biketoberfest to be extended from 4 days to 10 days. Local businesses and residents have long welcomed the attention and positive representation of Biketoberfest. Visitors often laud the hospitality, less crowded streets, and abundant lodging leading up to and during the rally.
Custom bike creations and modifications have long been a staple of our rally, and our attendees love using the event as their outlet for creative expression. The Rat Hole Custom Bike Show is world famous. Known for displaying bikes that are works of art, and these creations are indeed amazing. The Rat Hole Custom Bike Show at Daytona Lagoon Water Park is where bike builders show off and get recognized for their creativity. It’s just one of the many aspects that have contributed to Biketoberfest taking off over the years, becoming bigger than anyone during its humble beginnings as the Daytona Fall Tour could have imagined.
There is just no beating the scenery and sounds of the beach as you stroll The Boardwalk Classic Bike Show.
Biketoberfest has staked its claim on American media culture going mainstream on the hit television show, American Chopper. In an episode title “Biketober” a custom motorcycle was built and presented at Biketoberfest!
Orange County Choppers built a Spider-Man themed motorcycle just for Biketoberfest, and so was their very first bike “True Blue” shown at the festival in 1999!
The creative roots of Biketoberfest run deep, and many inspired artists have used our festival as inspiration for their art. Paul Zaloom, back in 2006, for example, created a puppet play inspired by his Biketoberfest experience.
Over the years, we have strived to offer a complete experience of Daytona Beach, including a long list of events and performances as well as a vibrant nightlife.
Biketoberfest was founded by women with an objective to boost tourism and economy by bringing biker lovers and like-minded individuals together. A farfetched idea in 1992. Today, however, developers have spent and continue to spend hundreds of millions of dollars building shopping centers, restaurants, hotels and a long list of other attractions in Daytona Beach.
The experience of Biketoberfest is one to cherish and miss. It is truly a place and event to make lasting memories.
