I've been asked multiple times, which Vincent Price films *I* personally recommend. Well... all of the above... Also, Theater of Blood...(Gif wouldn't load)

Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?

The saddest thing I've noticed in all the Acolyte whining (well ok the saddest is just the blatant bigotry, this is the second saddest) is the deeply incurious nature of Reaction culture. An incomplete and unfinished story has people SCREAMING in rage because of "plot holes" and "inconsistencies" which were, bear with me here... HINTS. They were HINTS. There was PLOT hidden in those "holes", you were SUPPOSED to notice something funky was going on. That's what HAPPENS in a STORY.
But when the culture is all about "well I need to IMMEDIATELY have a strong Reaction to things the SECOND they come out, therefore there is no time to bother with nuance or patience to see where a story goes before I call it out as a flaw"
If you wanna speedrun this sort of content, that one guy, what's his face... Cinema Sins? he'll do this for a full video with seemingly no self-awareness. He'll whine in the first 20 minutes of the film that there's a "plot hole" and then that "hole" is revealed to actually be on purpose and explained perfectly in the next 60 minutes of the film and he won't even BOTHER to edit out his own shortsightedness from his reaction video. Because he doesn't care. Because the point is never actual media analysis, it's JUST the dopamine rush of an IMMEDIATE Reaction. the immediate judgement. the cheap and easy laugh of "figuring out" where the creators fucked up.
Don't be that guy. Don't shriek about plot holes in unfinished stories. Just shut up and, like. Wait. Before you show your own ass to the whole world as some one who can't figure out media analysis beyond the most shallow possible interpretations. it's just a Reaction. and god are those boring.

A warning and a recommendation
I've reblogged several posts lately reminding everyone that the current Presidential election cycle is a stark contest between democracy as we know it and outright fascism.
Let me point out one thing this could mean to many of us.
Project 2025 -- the "think tank" for a Tr=mp adminstration -- includes among its goals the abolition and criminalization of "pornography," calling for jail time for those who create and distribute sexually explicit material.
Do you write explicit fanfiction, or read it? Then you are a pornographer and/or a supporter of the distribution of pornography. Do you think, if these people gain power, that fandom will escape their notice? Do you think it will matter to them that no money changes hands when you upload works to AO3 or elsewhere, or read others' work there? Do you think that access to AO3 will continue without incident? Do you think fan writers -- we know, sadly, from assorted fan wars how easily someone can be "doxxed" -- will be spared harassment, including criminal charges?
I don't. I am hoping for the best. But I am also:
-- Downloading onto my hard drive, and backing up on external drives, copies of all my own work as it appears on AO3, even if I have the drafts
-- Downloading the fics I loved and bookmarked
-- Soon, as time allows, downloading my RIDICULOUSLY long Marked For Later list
I recommend that all of us who love our fanfic, whatever the rating, do the same with all deliberate speed. And if the idea of needing to do this freaks the hell out of you, it should.
"They" won't come for your fanfic? Yeah, like "they" didn't come for Roe after 50 years (during all of which I was screaming at everyone I knew that "they" would). We could be, in the change of an administration, back to the days of fanfiction samizdat passed around clandestinely, even of banning shows and films that positively represent sexual expression and variation. To some of "them," the mere depiction of queer and trans people equals pornography, even if they are only holding hands or going to the farmers' market.
We take for granted that any time we choose, we can enjoy fiction -- in many cases sensitively, dazzlingly and affirmingly written -- which features infinite variation in gender, relationships and self-expression, and the harmless joy of good horny fun. That has helped people process and validate their sexual trauma, identity or experience. That celebrates an essential aspect of human nature, one which is the first that authoritarians try to stifle. That's revolutionary, and not remotely true of the whole world.
If the thought of having to prepare for losing that, and the community it's given all of us, jolts you, then VOTE Blue this fall (and if you are not in the US but care what happens here, signal boost this post). It's not the time for a performative third-party vote (or no-vote) that tells the Democrats you've given them a "do better" grade. All that will do is hand power to people who will do fuck-all to correct the worst errors of the current administration, and will most likely double down and make them worse. Save it for after November, when you will still, if you vote against fascism, have the freedom to work for a government that truly reflects your values. Right now, it's hammer time.
*This is a rare political post; tagging my usual list in the replies. If you want to get on or off my list, or be tagged for fanfic posts only, lmk.

Amaury "Chocolate Guy" Guichon is undoubtedly an extremely skilled sculptor in chocolate but I think my favorite thing about a lot of his videos is the effort he puts into putting actual dessert food under the sculpture work
So many of his desserts & pastries have at least 5 layers of different textures & flavors. Fruit jams, caramel, cake, creams, mousse, cookies, meringue, crumb layers etc
That's what makes his work truly impressive to me, especially as someone who quickly got tired of the "knife that turns everything into cake" thing, where it was all basic chocolate cake buried under 13 layers of fondant
It takes amaury's work from an impressive stunt to "if I ate that, it would probably be the best thing I'd eat in my whole life"

Issue #11 | General Submissions
Subs are open until 11:59pm EST on December 31, 2024. Issue #11 will be published on April 1, 2025.
Send us your dead doves, your blorbos, your plinkos, your wretched meow meows yearning to be free; that thing you wrote that made you think, “I don’t know where this belongs”; the stuff you’d never show anyone you know IRL. Give us your shameless, self-indulgent smut; the manuscript to the video essay you dictated to your YouTube subscribers in your head; your thoughtful explorations of trauma and identity; your Pepe Silvia wall; your sci-fi, your fantasy, your romance, your realism. We want anything and everything. As long as you identify as a fan, we want to read your work.
We are currently looking for:
Short fiction (only 1 piece at a time, max 12k words; if flash [under 1k], you may submit up to 5 pieces in one document)
Nonfiction (personal essays, articles, or meta, max 12k words)

Issue #12 | Novella Submissions
Subs are open until 11:59pm EST on December 31, 2024. Issue #12, the Doubles Issue, will be published on July 1, 2025.
You know those 20k one-shots that give you a reading hangover for days? Those are the vibes we're looking for in our 2024 novella issue. What we value most is an earnest portrayal of character, interesting relationship dynamics, and well-crafted prose that prioritizes clarity and voice. And if you want to add a truly tasteless amount of smut, that's fine too.
We are currently looking for:
Novellas between 15,000 and 35,000 words
Thank you for your continued support over the last 2 years. :') We can't wait to read your work!

I encourage everyone to not only be aware of Project 2025, but educate yourself on exactly what is — a nearly one thousand page document by Conservatives that describes the creation of an authoritarian state and dismantling of major necessary agencies (EPA, Department of Education, etc), as well as including a plan to remove those who hold high government seats and replace them with loyalists who have little to no experience in that field.
An estimated 41 million Gen Z teens will turn eighteen before this election. Please make sure you are registered to vote by November, and be sure to get to the polls on November 5th.

normalize my 12th grade English teacher, who admitted that his favorite TV show was Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and when a male student suggested that it was because Buffy/Sarah Michelle Gellar was hot, wrinkled his face like he’d bitten into something rotten and dead, and said, “At my age (he was 53), there is nothing less sexy than a teenager. You’re all disgusting messes.” It was 1999, I was 17, and I’d grown up in conservative Christian schools and churches. In my life I’d heard heard dozens of sermons from male preachers and teachers and even some older students, whining about how hard it was to be a dude and not commit the sin of thinking sexual thoughts, and how they needed women to wear long skirts and cover their bodies to not objectify them
and my bitter, misanthropic, atheist Brit Lit teacher, who hated my class because he was obsessed with teaching Tom Sawyer but got stuck with Shakespeare and Jane Austen, was the first, and this day the last man I have ever heard articulate a rebuttal from the depths of his soul to the idea that it was normal for teenage girls to be desirable to middle aged men

In France [July 7, 2024], a crowd reacts to election results showing a defeat for the hard-right political party that was expected to win big until the French people voted in greater numbers for leftists and centrists instead. This follows the complete rout suffered by the right-wing Conservative party in Great Britain just three days prior, on July 4th.

Elves (and other long lived fantasy races) as serial monogamists who have set end dates for their marriages; your first marriage contract is set for 50 years, and you can renew it if you're still happy by the end of it- but if not, or if you just want to try something new, you can part ways amicably and move on.
A second marriage is supposed to last longer (you should know what you like now that you've had practice with your first!) but you need a 'cooling off' period between marriages so many people don't get second married until their late 100's or early 200's... and of course you want to match with someone who is also on their second marriage, though 'mixed' marriages do occur. The calculations for the appropriate end date of a marriage based on age and previous status is a complex affair.
In the later stages mixed marriages are less of a problem and often considered ideal- towards the end of one's life one wants a slightly younger partner to be able to take care of them after all. Young enough that they'll have time to find a 'ending' partner of their own once their current spouse has passed, but not so young that they at completely different stages of life. Match makers are much more common for older folks than younger ones for this reason.
Of course this also creates avenues for unique tropes in the elven romantic annals. Star Crossed lovers who found each other when one was near the end and the other was just beginning; remarrying your first partner centuries later as you realize they were what you wanted all along; people coming to the end of their marriage who realize they don't want it to end- but does their partner feel the same???
The complex web of previous marriages this creates in elven societies is also a font for drama, and elves need to keep track of their various step parents and half siblings to avoid crossing family lines- (yet another reason not to date to far outside your age range). Nothing is more awkward than bringing home a new partner only to realize they're your mother's first wife.
