So You’d Like To Adopt A Service Dog.

It’s a common question we get at the Puppy In Training blog:

“How can I adopt a retired service dog? or a failed guide dog?” (we like to substitute “career change” for the word “failed”).

I’m not surprised by this question. Not all puppies in training make it as working guide dogs.

Not all service dogs work their entire lives.

And you bet your bottom dollar that these career change dogs are well socialized, have great house manners, and are aces when it comes to basic obedience.

So it goes without saying these dogs are in high demand!

QUICK RECOMMENDATION: One of the first things we did before bringing home our first puppy was ordered and read through Puppies for Dummies. It’s an excellent book that teaches the basics of raising and training a puppy. If you’re considering adopting a puppy then be proactive and start reading about what you can expect.

On today’s agenda:

I’ll go over a few facts about career change or retired service dog.

A few tips I’ve learned over the years as a puppy raiser on how to give yourself the best chance to get a retired service dog.

Finally, I prepared a list of assistance dog organizations with adoption programs (with direct links to adoption pages).

Career Change Service Dogs

I have an aunt that adopted a service dog that didn’t make it through the training. Something to keep in mind for readers. It’s a tough process to find the right dogs for these programs and sometimes they just aren’t able to make it.

But these little guys who sadly, fail out of the program, are super smart and need a home. So if you don’t need a service dog but are looking for great little pups who need homes, you can also reach out to these groups to find out where they send the pups that don’t make the cut.

If you’re thinking about adopting a Yorkshire Terrier, a Bulldog, or an Irish Wolfhound then it’s highly unlikely you will find what you are looking for when trying to adopt from a service dog organization.

QUICK TIP: As I mentioned the two most common dog breeds in service dog organizations are Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers. Read up on these two breeds to make sure their personality, temperament, and energy level will fit your lifestyle.

While I’m not ruling out that you will never be able to adopt one of these or many other dog breeds at a service dog organization I will say it’s highly unlikely.

Based on our experience here are a few simple facts about what kind of dogs you will find in service dog adoption programs:

Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers are the most common breeds available. You will also see Lab/Golden crosses as well as German Shepherds, Poodles Labradoodles, and Goldendoodles. We have seen many other breeds working as service dogs, but these are probably the most common you will see in one of these adoption programs.

Many of these organizations have a very long waiting list for adoptable career change service dogs. For instance, Guide Dogs of America: “Currently the waiting list to adopt a dog is over six years.” Can you recall what you were doing six years ago? Can you imagine what you’ll be doing in six years?

Most programs have more inquires then adoptable dogs and therefore their selection process is based on suitability rather than a first-come, first-serve basis. So even with these long waiting lists you may still receive a dog earlier then anticipated.

Common reasons why service dogs are career changed

Health – anything from allergies to cataracts to varying severities of dysplasia (hip and elbow).

Behavioral – high activity level, incompatibility with cats or other dogs, assertiveness requiring strong handler leadership. Some of these dogs may not be suitable for homes with young children or other pets.

After 10+ years of raising guide and service dogs I’ve learned a thing or two about how to give yourself the best chance to adopt a retired service dog.

Get involved with the organization – As a puppy raiser I have the first opportunity to adopt a career change puppy that I raised. Stetson was the first puppy I raised and now lives at home with me as a pet. A friend allowed guide dogs to use his facility for monthly meetings. Several years later he was interested in adopting a career change guide dog. The adoption department bumped his name up the waiting list.

Find a local service dog organization – After reading through hundreds of assistance dog websites I’ve found that the majority only adopt out locally. Check out our Ultimate List of Service Dog Schools with Adoption Programs to find a local school near you.

Make a donation – We know a local business that makes yearly donations to guide dogs to sponsor puppies in the guide dog program. Needless to say the organization owners has priority anytime they are interested in adopting a career change puppy.

Be flexible – I’ve heard through the grape vine that if you are willing to accept a dog with health problems you will have a chance to adopt a retired service dog much quicker. The severity of health issues can vary from simple skin allergies to severe hip or elbow dysplasia. Of course being flexible is not just about accepting a dog with health issues. Expanding your criteria to any breed, color, age, etc. will give you more opportunity to adopt a dog.

Keep in touch – Another tip I heard through the grape vine is don’t just send your application in and wait six years. Follow up regularly, get to know the adoption coordinator, visit the campus, talk to employees at the school, and puppy raisers. Keep in touch and stay connected. By keeping in touch you’ll find out when puppies are dropped, when dogs are retired, and when a dog becomes available.

UPDATE: Can you believe we wrote the original article on how to adopt a service dog way back in 2007 (Stetson wasn’t even 1 year old and still a guide dog puppy in training).

Remember two things:

Persistence – you need to keep looking and trying.

Patience – most likely it won’t be a quick process.

Service dogs are well bred, socialized, and trained. However, you’ll still want to keep up with their training.

If this is your first dog or if you need to brush up on your knowledge and skills I highly recommend reading an introductory book on dog training. One of our favorites is Puppies for Dummies (I know I already mentioned this book, but it’s worth repeating), a quick and easy read that will give you a solid foundation for your new dog.

Both MSN/Windows Live Messenger uses Windows built-in 'Credential Store' to securely store the login account passwords. Not only Windows uses it to store network authentication passwords, but also other applications such as Outlook, Remote Desktop, GMail Notifier etc uses the same mechanism for storing their login passwords. Closing a Microsoft account means you won’t be able to use it to sign in to the Microsoft products and services you’ve been using. It also deletes all the services associated with it, including your: saved OneDrive files. Xbox Live data and GamerTag. Skype ID and contacts. NuGet.org account. Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, and MSN email accounts.

There are two reasons you might think your account has been hacked.

You may have received a message from Microsoft that says, “Help us secure your account”. That means we have seen some activity on your account that is out of the ordinary enough for us to take measures to lock down your account until you can take action.

You have seen activity such as unauthorized charges, spam being sent to your contact list, unrecognized names in your file sharing, etc.

If neither of those sounds like your situation, please visit When you can’t sign in to your Microsoft account.

Follow these steps in order to help you take back control of your Microsoft account.

Note: Xbox customers will find a solution customized to the way you interact with your console and account on Xbox Compromised Account Solution.

1. Change your Microsoft account password

The first thing you’ll want to do to protect your account is to change your password.

Go to Recover your account and type in the email address, phone number, or Skype name you use to sign in. Then select Next.

We'll ask where you'd like to get your security code. Select Next.

Type the requested information and select Send code.

Type the security code into Verify your identity, then select Next.

Type in your New password. Then confirm it by typing it again into the Re-enter password field.

If you are unable to change your password using a security code to your contact information, complete the recovery form. Here are some tips you can use to fill out the form.

Note: For the protection of your account, we have strict policies on how our advocates can help you with your account. Microsoft Support advocates are not able to reset your password provide account information without proper validation or make any changes to your account security on your behalf. Only you can reset your password and make security changes to your account.

Steps to take if I can't verify that I own the account

We recommend that you try again, up to two times per day. You may find more information or have remembered something that will help.

You can always create a new account if you’re having trouble with the recovery request and try again later when you remember something new that might help.

2. Check sign in activity for sign ins that weren’t you

After signing in, you’ll want to review the recent activity on your account. If you see any account activity that looks unfamiliar, select This wasn’t me, and we’ll help you change your password if you haven’t already done so.

Note: Location is based on IP address and is approximate to protect your privacy. Look for consistency rather than exactness of location.

Go to Security > Sign-in activity > View my activity

Because of the sensitivity of this information, we’ll need to verify your identity with a security code. On the Protect your account screen, select the method by which you’d like to receive this code, then select Send code.

On the Enter code screen, enter the security code you receive.

Review the recent sign-in activity on your account. If you see any successful sign-in that you do not recognize, run a scan with your security software and remove any malware you find. Then change your password again.

3. Review your Microsoft account settings

Check Security Contact Info: Remove any security contact information the attacker might have added.

On the Security basics page, select the Update info button. If you're not already signed in to your Microsoft account, you'll be prompted to sign in.

You may be asked to enter a verification code to continue. If you don't have access to your alternate email or phone number, choose I don't have any of these and follow the instructions to replace your security info.

You'll see your security info under Security settings. Choose Remove for any you want to remove. You may be asked to add new security info before you can remove the old info.

Update Outlook.com email settings: Sometimes attackers change your email settings so that they receive emails you send out, or they set up automatic replies for emails you receive. Because this is so common, Microsoft will reset these settings to the default options if we think your account was compromised.

Select the settings icon, then View all settings.

Review the following settings and remove any unfamiliar addresses or information that might have been added:

Remove OneDrive Sharing: Make sure an attacker didn’t give himself access to your files.

Select Shared on the left menu under OneDrive.

Review the folders and files that you're sharing to see if any have been added or removed.

Review Order History: Review Order history for unrecognized charges.

If you see charges you don’t remember making, check your apps and downloaded content to make sure someone in your family didn’t make the purchase.

4. Protect your other online accounts

If an attacker had access to your username and password, they may have access to any other accounts where you used that account. Just to be safe, you should change your passwords on those other sites as well.

5. Protect your Microsoft account for the future

We especially recommend you take a look at our Do’s and Don’ts for creating a strong password, and that you consider using two-step verification and the Microsoft Authenticator app to help strengthen your account security and to sign-in without passwords.

How to hack almost any hotmail, easily without keylogging, in 24 hours.

Greetings fellow HF members and guests, welcome to my first tutorial.This thread was recently deleted due to a misunderstanding (just beforeit reached 20,000 views ), so i'm re-posting it (with permission). I see alot of new HF members joining, and wanting to learn how to hacksomebodies hotmail account..or asking others to do it for them. Most are under the illusion that there's this 'hack' button you canpress and you instantly get their password, however this is not thecase. Most newb's are put off by the fact that they have to keylog or phishtheir way into getting a password, and they resort to asking the'hackers'. But i'll provide an easy alternative. This method is called Reverting,and you will be sending a form in to microsoft customer support toreset the password for your (or somebody elses) hotmail account. For this method, it helps to know the person, even a little, but i'llstill give you a step-by-step tut on how to find the information andfill out each part of the form. NOTE: THIS TUTORIAL IS FOREDUCATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IN ANY WAY FOR HOW THISINFORMATION IS USED, YOU USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK. YOU MAY LEARN ALSOHOW TO GET YOUR OWN ACCOUNT BACK FROM THIS. Step 1: go here: https://support.live.com/eform.aspx?prod...mcs&scrx=1 This is the form you will be filling out. Step 2: Give them your victims full name. Now, if you do not know their first name, try the following things to find it. First, try using these two sites, simply enter their email and hit return. http://www.pipl.com/email http://com.lullar.com if you want more, google their hotmail account(s), for example, type into google: '[email protected]' Include the quotes, cause this searches for only the hotmail account. If you gain any results, it will most likely be forums or if you'relucky, social networking sites, that they have filled out their info on. Go through these searches, and look at every one, even make a .txt file in notepad pasting down all the info you can on them. Once you're done, if you havnt got their last name, keep reading..if you have, goto step 3. Presuming you dont yet have their last name, try going to social networking sites, like: http://www.myspace.com http://www.facebook.com http://www.bebo.com http://www.friendster.com Or any others you can think of, and search for their hotmail account using the websites search feature. if you get any results, you're in luck, most of the time people includealot of information on themselves in there. Follow any leads you canfind on the info, and even ask them or their friends (look up atutorial on social engineering info out of people first, it will help). Now another thing you can do is use http://www.whois.com IF your victim has their own website. If you dont have it by now, maybe you should find an easier target, orif you're desperate, use this technique to hack one of their rl bestfriends, and alot of the time they have their full name assigned toyour victims hotmail address, in their addressbook. Or, I sometimes just say 'I'm pretty sure I only put in my first nameat registration, I'm paranoid like that' or something along thoselines... It's worked for me. BTW: This is called d0xing, or'documenting', basically harvesting info on people, it's completelylegal as long as you get all your info from the public domain (forums,social networking sites etc). Step 3: The e-mail address for us to send a response to. simple, give them your email address... could use a fake one if you'reparanoid (one you got access too), but i dont see any risk. Step 4: Primary e-mail address/member ID associated with the account you are inquiring about. Here you put in your victims email address (the one you're trying to hack). Step 5: Date of birth. You can simply give them the year, if you dont know any further thenthat..but if you want to be on the safe side, read step 2, and usethose techniques to find their date of birth. Step 6: Country If you dont know their country, which you probably should, use their IPaddress which you will have in one of the next steps to find it, byusing http://www.ip-adress.com/ip_tracer/ Step 7: State same deal, use their IP addy if you dont know it already Step 8: ZIP or postal code Same deal again, it's usually correct if you use the IP addy...just use http://www.ip-adress.com/ip_tracer/ and find their town/suburb or whatever, and google the ZIP code for it. Step 9: The secret answer to your question simply put 'i dont remember' Step 10: Your alternate email address for this, you just put in the email address you're trying to hack, you dont need their alternate email address. Step 11: Your IP Address Okay so here's probably the toughest one, but it's still easy. (NOTE: It's very hard to revert an account unless you successfully complete this step) There's alot of ways to get their IP, i'll give you the easy ones. Email: Get them to send you an email somehow, it doesnt matter how, you can just send an email saying: 'hey, how are you?' and they'll probably reply. Once you have theiremail (dont use old emails, please, everybody uses dynamic IP's thesedays) right click on it, and click 'view source', you will see something like this: ...now you want to find 'X-Originating-IP: (XX.XXX.XX.XX)' That is their IP address. Website: Go here http://www.reza24.com/ip and give them your nickname or whatever you want them to call you, and your email address, like this: They will give you a URL, find a way to send that to your victim. For example, for one of my victims, he said 'ha i got 3 firewalls youcant hack me' so i told him to goto that URL if he's so safe, and itold him if he doesnt, he needs to grow some balls...lol he did :) BTW, when they go there, it just says the webpage cant be found, and then you get an email from reza24 telling their IP :D Full credit of this site goes to Raider, he did an awesome job :) he deserves some rep for it :P MSN:if you can talk to them on msn, then you can get their IP that waytoo..there's two ways, either download a easy-to-use script, or do itmanually with cmd, i'll show you how to do it manually first. Manually: Send them a file, or get them to send you a file. 'hey, i love that song, can you send me it?' or 'omg, this is the funniest picture ever'. Before you start the transfer though, goto start > run (if you'reusing vista, just press the windows key) and type in cmd, and hit enter. type in the following: netstat -n and hit enter, it will show you a list of active connections to different IP's. Remember or take a screenshot of those IP's, because once you start thetransfer, type in netstat again while it's transferring and check forany new IP's, that is your victims IP. With a script: IF you have windows live messenger plus (probably the best WLM IMO), download this script: http://rapidshare.com/files/133356881/IPGet_1.50.rar It's called IP-Get, and will show you your current msn contacts IPaddresses IF you're currently connected to them with a fileshare. Itwill also allow you to save the IP addresses, and look up theirlocations. Here is a screenie of IP-get: There are other ways, but surely, you should have been able to gettheir IP by now...if not, look up a tut on it, using the search feature. Step 12: Your internet service provider very easy to find, use their IP, either using the IP get script if you have it, or http://www.ip-adress.com/ip_tracer/ Step 13: The last date and time that you successfully signed in Unless you know this as a fact, either take your best guess, say you dont remember, or yesterday. Step 14: The names of any folders that you created in addition to the default folders leave this blank, or say you dont know (unless you know this for a fact). Step 15: Names of contacts in your hotmail address book give them all the contacts you know are definately or most likely inthere, including yourself, and even their other accounts (they mightadd themselves, everybody seems to). Also give them [email protected] [email protected], as most people have them added. Step 16: Subjects of any old mail that is in your inbox okay just use common sense for this one, things to include are: hey, how are you, RE:, FW:, admin, windows live, hotmail staff,recovery, registration, support, lol, password, comfirmation, noreply,delivery status notification (failure). Also, if they are subscribed to any forums (like hackforums(but pleasedont hack other HF members :P)), social networking sites (like myspace,bebo) or online games (like RuneScape, WoW), then be sure to includethem too. Step 17: Names of contacts on your messenger contact list If you happen to know any of their friends, this is where you put theirdisplay name...if you dont have them added, put their first names, andif you dont know them at all, just leave it blank, or say you dontremember. Step 18: Your Messenger nickname If you know it, put it in..if you dont, say 'i cant remember it exactly' or leave it blank. Gil Shaham was born in Urbana, Illinois, while his parents, Israeli scientists, were on an academic fellowship at the University of Illinois. His father Jacob was an astrophysicist,(1) and his mother, Meira Diskin, was a cytogeneticist. His sister is the pianist Orli Shaham. His brother Shai Shaham is the head of the Laboratory of Developmental Genetics at Rockefeller University.(2) Gil Shaham is a graduate of the Horace Mann School in Riverdale, New York. The family returned to Jerusalem when Gil was two. At the age of seven, Shaham began taking violin lessons from Samuel Bernstein at the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem and received annual scholarships from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation.(3)

In 1981, Gil Shaham debuted with the Jerusalem Symphony and the Israel Philharmonic while he was studying with Haim Taub. Later that year, he attended Aspen Music School in Colorado, studying with Dorothy DeLay and Jens Ellermann.(3) Later in 1982 after taking first place in Israel's Claremont Competition, he became a scholarship student at Juilliard. He has also studied at Columbia University.(3)

Currently he teaches at Bard College Conservatory of Music in the Hudson Valley (NY).

Shaham is married to the Australian-born violinist Adele Anthony. They have three children, Elijah, Ella Mei and Simon. Gil Shaham currently lives in New York City with his family.(3)

Music career(edit)

At age 10, Shaham debuted as soloist with the Jerusalem Symphony, conducted by the violinist Alexander Schneider. Less than a year later, Shaham performed with Israel's foremost orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic, which was conducted by Zubin Mehta. At age 11, in 1982, Shaham won first prize in the Claremont Competition and was admitted to the Juilliard School in New York, where he studied with Dorothy DeLay and Hyo Kang. In addition, both he and his younger sister, the pianist Orli Shaham, attended Columbia University.

Shaham's career took off in 1989, when he was called upon to replace an ailing Itzhak Perlman for a series of concerts with Michael Tilson Thomas and the London Symphony Orchestra. Taking time out from his studies at the Horace Mann School (where he was a senior), he flew to London,(4) then performed the Bruch and Sibelius violin concertos.

In 1990, Shaham received the Avery Fisher Career Grant. In 1992, he was awarded the Premio Internazionale of the Accademia Chigiana in Siena.

Shaham has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, among them the New York Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Russian National Orchestra, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, and National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America.

Shaham plays a Stradivarius violin from the 'long pattern' period, the 'Comtesse de Polignac' of 1699. It was offered to Shaham on loan, in 1989, by the Stradivarius Society of Chicago.

What Happened: Cramer recently highlighted Spartan Energy Acquisition (NYSE: SPAQ), a SPAC merging with Fisker. Cramer compared Henrik Fisker and his company to Nikola (NYSE: NKLA) and Trevor Milton, the Nikola founder who resigned.

On Wednesday, Cramer told his 1.4 million Twitter followers “I am sick of SPACs!.” A simple response came from Palihapitiya:
