Vinyl cutting blades and blade holders: Things to know
If we talk about vinyl cutting blades and blade holder, then their job is to hold up a hard blade to a piece of material and create something artistic out of it.
A blade holder works with a number of blades depending on the type of material it will be working with. Like, it can work with a skinny deep blade with a 60 degree angle. This angle of blade is used on vinyl cutting machine when you want to cut thicker materials like sandblast mask or flock or abrasive materials like Siser Glitter and reflective vinyl. The blade doesn’t have a lot of surface area to offer resistance so it glides smoothly through the media. However, this means it wears out very quickly. For a good job and making clean cuts, you must replace this blade at least twice a year.
Then there is one very common blade, 46 degrees of sharp hard carbide steel. This is a shallower fatter blade so it wears longer with constant use. This is an ideal choice for a majority of cutting jobs, for printable media and indoor and outdoor vinyl graphics. A 30 degree blade on the other hand is very flat and shallow, so it won’t cut too deep and works well for scoring too. Recommended for sheer ultra-thin materials like paper, laminate and window tint and heat transfer vinyl.
The nice thing about blade holder in a vinyl cutter machine is that it is interchangeable and adjustable. So, if you are not satisfied with the job your blade holder is doing like it is not cutting through the liner or leaving behind unweedable vinyl then you must change your blade holder that will be apt for the material you will be working on.
How your vinyl cutter blade holder works?
The blade holder as name suggests holds the plotter blade during operation. That is quite simple because the holder uses bearings to ensure the blade is kept exactly straight as it gets carried across the platen during cutting. In order for the cutting offset to work aptly, the blade must be held perpendicularly at a 90 degree angle from media surface.
This ensure that tangents at the start and end of paths meet where they should and that your designs are cut with no visible break in the cut path. This definitely lets you to weed and apply the letters. Gradually, the bearings wear out and the holder’s grip weakens and the blade starts tilting slightly eccentric during use.

Signs it is time to change the blade holder of vinyl cutting machine?
This can also be caused due to a bad offset.
Partly cut shapes for example, “tags” in the corners are signs of a worn out blade holder.
The two most common signs of a worn out blade holder include: one sign is the failure of the cutter to fully cut characters with corners. There will be small gaps at the meeting ends of the corners. The other sign, which is more common is the failure to join start and end of circular paths. Circles will start looking like open arcs.
However, this is commonly misdiagnosed as an offset issue. Some simple observations will help find the actual cause. If you start to notice this on best vinyl cutter on which you have not changed the offset parameters, then it is probably due to a worn blade holder. When checking the blade holder, try opening the cap and cleaning it out once in a while to get rid of small pieces of vinyl that may have gotten inside during the operation. Static electricity in a vinyl cutter machine: Tips and tricks to alleviate the problem
If you use vinyl machine, then at least once you must have experienced the problem of static electricity. Even in the best vinyl cutting machine, problems like this can occur. Static electricity in vinyl cutter machine is a very common and annoying problem. Static electricity causes a number of issues like:
Carriage moving to the outer limits of the cutter range when the artwork is within the range of the cutter.
Spilling vinyl onto the floor
Uncontrolled motor movement

Stopping during cutting
The reason behind this issue is that vinyl has significant static charge so coming off the roll, the vinyl is charged. Additionally, the vinyl produces additional charge when it gets rubbed against the center portion of the vinyl cutting machine. This center area is generally coated or painted so it is insulated and won’t dissipate the charge. When charge reaches a particular level, the charge will dissipate to ground.
Usually, the path that through which charge dissipates is the USB port/cable. When this happens, the charge will disrupt the link between the cutter and the computer causing the above issues.
To detect static interference with your vinyl cutter, experts recommend you remove the blade and vinyl and run your job a number of times. If the cutter starts working fine, add the vinyl back in and run the job again.

The сuttіng blade was а constant source оf irritation at fіrѕt. For some rеаѕоn, the first 5-6 blades I рurсһаѕеԁ did not һаvе removable tips. Тһеn I, somehow, mаnаgеԁ to get а blade with а removable tip аnԁ that made АLL the difference. Lіttlе bits of рареr can get ѕtuсk in the blаԁе housing which саn negatively affect tһе performance of tһе blade so, trуіng to fish tіnу bits of рареr out of аn even tinier һоlе is almost іmроѕѕіblе without the rеmоvаblе tip. So, һореfullу, the removable tір is here tо stay because іt is invaluable.

The cutting mаtѕ are excellent untіl they're not аnуmоrе. I have оnlу had one mаt (out of tһе probably 100 tһаt I have оwnеԁ) that was іnѕаnеlу sticky out tһе pack - ѕо much so tһаt it shredded аnԁ destroyed the оnе piece of рареr I used оn it. All оf the other mаtѕ I have оwnеԁ are great fоr a good wһіlе.
I have kерt some numbers аnԁ I can uѕuаllу get 50-60 full page cuts оut of a 12х12 mat before іt becomes difficult tо use. I һаvе tried all оf the popular rе-ѕtісk methods (spray gluе, Re-Nu sheets, Ѕlісе mat adhesive, Хуrоn adhesive etc.) аnԁ none of tһеm are ideal. Моѕt leave you wіtһ not enough аԁһеѕіvе or adhesive tһаt sticks to tһе paper, not tһе mat. I һаvе also tried Сrісut mats, because tһеу are cheaper, but the quality іѕ not as gооԁ as Silhouette brаnԁеԁ mats. Again, І use the Silhouette Roll Feeder fоr һіgһ volume сuttіng so, if уоu are just а hobbyist, one mаt should last а long time.

The included ѕоftwаrе is ok. Іt is intuitive tо use but һаѕ some functionality рrоblеmѕ in my оріnіоn. Opening large grарһісѕ is my bіggеѕt issue. If tһе graphic is tоо large, the Ѕtuԁіо software will ѕіmрlу stop displaying іt or printing іt properly, even іf you shrink іt down. Any ԁосumеnt containing the іmаgе will not ѕаvе and will bесоmе wildly distorted. Lаrgе images need tо be shrunk іn another software bеfоrе they are ореnеԁ in Studio. Ғrоm what I саn gather from ѕuрроrt on this іѕѕuе, this may nоt be a рrоblеm in the ԁеѕіgnеr version of tһе software, which соѕtѕ an additional 50.00.
QUALITY OF СUТЅ:
I cut реrһарѕ 30-40 pages а day on mу Silhouette Roll Ғееԁеr. I use еvеrуtһіng from 110саrԁѕtосk to super tһіn (read: crappy) ѕtісkеr paper. The Саmео can cut а variety of mаtеrіаlѕ well. The tһісkеr cardstock needs tо be double сut on a lоw speed though аnԁ, because of tһіѕ, it can tаkе forever to сut a full ѕһееt of shapes оn the thicker ѕtuff. But, cutting ѕtісkеrѕ is super fаѕt and easy tо do.

How to fix lifting corners when using vinyl cutter machine
Can a graphic designer make a sign that is too small or too big to cut? The answer is –yes. Some common issues encountered when using vinyl cutting machine are self-inflicted and occur when something is designed beyond the parameters of your machine.
One most common problem is edge lifting at the time of plotting, also called as “vinyl ears”. As the plotter blade moves across the vinyl, it starts lifting the corners as it cuts. This is problematic and irritating. What are its causes and how you can fix it? Here we will discuss all this in detail.
There are three main causes of the ‘vinyl ears’ or edge lifting issue. These are character size that is too small for the blade of the vinyl cutter machine to articulate, a worn-out blade holder or an improper offset.
Improper offset:
One of the reasons for vinyl ears is wrong offset. The offset is important as it is a measure of the effective width of the cutting edge of the blade. It is the distance between the cutting edge of the blade and the vertical axis around which the blade spins.
The offset can be adjusted and changed with the cutting conditions along with force and speed. The offset value tells the vinyl cutter that how much beyond the actual corner tangent it must move in order to drag the tip of the blade to the exact point. If the offset is wrong, the plotter won’t articulate corners accurately. For a 45° Roland blade the standard offset is .0250. The default offset of Graphtec cutters depends on the tool used. You can adjust it to plus or minus 3. If the value is wrong, it will create issues. Reset it to the default and try again.

Dirty or worn out blade holder:
Another cause of vinyl edge lifting is worn out blade holder. When the blade holder gets old, its grip on the spinning blade gets weak. This is a gradual degradation. Generally, the first sign is a failure to complete the corners of rectangular shapes.
When the grip of the blade holder weakens significantly, it can also make the corners to lift as it spins the blade and changes direction because the blade is losing its vertical orientation as it pivots. Debris in the blade holder can have a same effect. Debris in the blade holder can also cause similar problems. Pull the blade out and ensure there are no small pieces of vinyl stuck in there spoiling the work.

Sometimes the problem is not due to blade holder or the offset; it is basically due to simple math problem. If the corner or arc on a properly detailed letter is very small, it just can’t be cut aptly with a standard 45° blade. It is like mowing around a plant with a standard riding mower when all you need is a “Zero Turn” tractor.
In digital sign making, the 60° blade is the Zero Turn tractor. Changing from a 45° to a 60° blade effectively shrinks the offset and tightens the turning radius, letting you cut a more accurately detailed arc. This brings up another factor that not every plotter can cut designs so small with such accuracy. If you are using a vinyl cutter machine with a stepper motor, changing the angle of the blade may not be sufficient. You may have to change the size of the character to a size your cutter can handle.
The vinyl ears issue can be easily resolved if you know the problem and the solution. Ensure you are plotting with the right offset; you are not using a dirty or worn-out blade holder, and change to a zero turn or 60° blade. If none of these helps then you must adjust your design to fit the capability of your vinyl cutting machine. Or upgrade your equipment to something more advanced of cutting your designs.

Causes/Solutions:
Cutter blade is not firmly set in the holder.
Cutter holder is not firmly attached. It should be tightened.
Issue: Why letters are broken or some parts of the letters are missing?
Causes/Solutions:
The vinyl is too tightly wrapped or too heavy. Possibly metal roller is soiled by vinyl chips or some foreign substance.
Cutter tip is too long, cutting force is too great or cutting speed is too fast.
Pinch roller is under high pressure or synchromesh belt is too tight.
Metal roller is faulty. If metal roller is faulty get it replaced.
Issue: Why does the paper run deviation?
Causes/Solutions:
The stickiness is not placed right.
The platen is very dirty so that the resistance from two sides cannot be balanced when the paper is moving.
The pinch rollers don’t match each other or have been deformed.
The pressure of the pinch roller is a little smaller and the paper is highly sensitive to the outer force.
The balance of the stickiness weight is not very good.

Causes/Solutions:
The software setting is not matched to the machine, so set right tool compensation value or adopt proper command set.
The plotting software has suddenly broken-up.
There is a virus in the PC/laptop or plotting software has been damaged.
Check if the installed USB Driver is correct.

Causes/Solutions:
Either the blade tip is too long or maybe you need more pressure.
This also occurs when the platen is too dirty or the stickiness is too soft. These things can increase the resistance in the two pieces of paper and make it fall behind the roller rotating, therefore resulting in deformed pattern.
There is some issue in the software setting.
The metal roller can’t correctly follow the motor running or the carriage belt is too loose.
The motor is not able to run all the steps.
The pattern is normal but incomplete; this may be due to too small tool compensation value.
Issue: Cutting dashes, dotted line or looks perforated
Causes/Solutions:
This could occur due to damaged cutting strip. Groove in strip that results in uneven cutting surface.
Too much exposure of blade builds friction as there is not sufficient space between the material and the blade.
Replace cutting strip.
Reduce blade depth.

Not enough blade pressure/force
Dull blade
Set blade pressure/force for the type of material being cut.
Replace blade.

Vinyl sign: Tips to set up your vinyl cutting machine and ensure a quality result
Vinyl sign is an important component of advertising display systems. The instant visual impact of an advertising message and your marketing efforts however start during the production with your signage equipment. Other than choosing the right vinyl sign for your application, setting up your vinyl cutting machine correctly is the primary step in developing a quality sign.
There are two main sizes of machines, firstly a cutter that is generally 650 mm wide and takes vinyl rolls up to 610 mm that can fit on a stand or a bench top. For larger rolls, approximately 1220 mm wide, a cutter on a stand is more apt choice. However, the setup process is same for both.
There are two areas, the cutting blade setup and the surrounding environment you cut in, that need attention to guarantee success.
Cutting blade
Make sure that the cutting blade is set up correctly with the right pressure and the depth suitable to the material you are using. The cutter is like a surgical blade and it remains continuously in contact with the material unless it needs to lift up and go to a space.
Most of the cutters have a multi depth cutting attachment. This lets you position a cover that goes over the blade so it doesn’t cut deeper than you require. If the blade depth is too long, there is a risk of snagging on the vinyl with a result that the vinyl starts to look crumpled. However, by setting the length of the blade correctly, you can cut very precisely.
One must choose a cutting bit with the cutting length or edge that most accurately matches the thickness of the material to be cut. It is also vital to ensure that the cutting edge is at least as long as the thickness of the material to be cut. For this, start by testing the blade length manually with a hard surface and the material to be cut. Whenever you cut, you can adjust the multi depth blade holder and cover according to the requirement. For example, if your material is 0.5 mm in depth, the depth of the blade must be 0.6-0.7 mm.

For example, on some reflective films like honeycomb reflective film that has a very thick topcoat and thin liner the blade pressure is crucial. In this condition, you have to have sufficient pressure for the machine to cut through the material but not too much to cut through the bottom layer.

Environment:
Make sure that there are no obstructions in front or behind the cutting machine. It is important that the material runs through the machine backwards and forwards in a straight line. Make sure there is nothing behind the unit that will obstruct the free movement of the vinyl.
Simultaneously, don’t have anything on the floor that will make the material to lift or catch. By keeping the surrounding environment clear, you will be able to run up to 50m in length without the need to touch anything.
When the setup is not right, the material doesn’t run through the machine in a proper alignment and risk not activating one of the eye sensors. Simultaneously, there is a risk of jamming the machine as it is off track. For example, if you are cutting words for a van of say 4 meters in length, it needs to be precise to get the desired affect and if the tracking is off, you may have to again work on the sign cutting and you will end up wasting a nice amount of vinyl material.
In short, the key to cutting success is to make your environment is not cluttered. Use a flat surface with nothing around for a smooth free flow of the material. Also, ensure that you use the right blade and multi depth cutting attachment and set your cutter to the correct pressure to cut precisely. Does the brand matters?
In general, blades of vinyl cutting machines are not universally compatible. The blade must fit perfectly in the blade holder and the blade holder must fit perfectly in the tool carriage. How much of the vinyl cutter blade should be visible?
Whether you are installing a replacement vinyl cutter blade or buying a cutter blasé or installing the OEM blade in a brand new vinyl cutting machine, the primary thing you have to know is how much of the blade should be visible or out? If the blade is enough out for you to see and feel the tip, it is probably too far out.
Most inexperienced vinyl cutter owners poorly install the blade with too much of it extended from the holder. Set it in a way that you hardly see the tip. Then manually drag the blade holder across a sheet of vinyl making a square or a box pattern. You must be able to weed that easily, but there should not be deep scoring of the release liner. On flipping the vinyl over, you should not feel the cut line in the back of the liner. If you are able to cut vinyl manually without carving up the liner, then the blade is placed just right.

What does window tint film mean?
Window tint film is generally 2 mil or thinner, and doesn’t include a Kraft paper release liner, so a 45° blade cuts too deeply. Vinyl Express Q Series and Graphtec users have the choice of using a specially made blade offered by Tint Tek 2020. This blade has a special angle optimized for accurately cutting window tint film.
What is a flock blade?
“Flock” is a particular type of cuttable thermal transfer film, also known as “T-shirt Vinyl” that is used to replicate the thick, velvet like feel of a letterman sweater. Due to its thickness, a 60° blade would be needed for cutting flock. Therefore, the term ‘flock blade’.
What about tiny graphics?
Trying to create finely detailed and very small fonts poses a challenge in front you. When a font size is approx. half inch, some parts of it are so small that the rotation of a standard 45° blade makes the edges of the vinyl to lift as the letter is being cut. It is like mowing around a sapling with a standard riding mower when you need a “Zero Turn” tractor. This is a difficult problem often termed to as ‘vinyl ears’. In this case, using a 60° blade works by properly tightening the rotation of the blade tip in the holder. It also decreases the size of the blade’s cutting edge. The result is accurately cut graphic with no lifting edges.

This is an important question, which blade to be used for which vinyl? The three most commonly used blade angles for vinyl cutting machine are 30, 45 and 60 degrees. Many manufacturers use only 45 and 60 degree blades. For standard sized graphics for PVC vinyls, a standard 45° blade is right choice. 30° blade option on the other hand is perfect for standard sized graphics in thin films like cast vinyl.
