Note
"go hang a salami" backwards is "i'm a lasagna hog"
That sounded like terrible forbidden information that I wasn’t supposed to know about but it made me laugh enough to draw this so thanks

It’s cool looking back on Tom and Maddie as characters because I personally really see a connection between them and a good chunk of game/15 year old Sonic’s personality/lifestyle.
Tom influences Sonic by:
Teaching him to properly fight beyond spindashing (since Tom is a cop and can clearly fight from the bar scene) Not being afraid of life or death situations if it means protecting the people he cares about Dissing out sarcastic/clever comebacks like it’s second nature Handling spontaneous situations really well Being a beacon of hope/a hero to a group of people (probably more that I’m too lazy to think of right now)
And we don’t know as much about her as Tom yet, but Maddie influences Sonic by:
Wanting to protect and save animals Teaching him to be flexible to help in battles Like even if they’re not “canon”, it still feels like modern Sonic could’ve easily came to be because of these two characters in his life at some point lol

New Pat Casey video AMA
youtube
Here’s something I was looking forward to, Pat Casey, one of the screenwriters of “Sonic the hedgehog” was part of an episode of “Hey Fandom!” in which he was asked several questions about the development of the film not only by the host, but by several fans as well! Really worth the watch!
Here are some interesting things I wanted to share though.
- There was both Superman and The Little Mermaid inspiration.
- When writing Sonic they did look at some of the media (shows, comics, etc) but they chose to focus on the first few games. They wanted to make things in a way you could see the movie as the prequel of your favourite Sonic media.
- The Sonic movie short they used to pitch the movie was made with leftover budget from Tim Miller’s show “Love, Death and Robots”
- Most of the baseball scene was fully animated with the old design. He thinks fans would have grown to like it had they seen more of it.
- The line “They don’t need time off to get DRUNK and put the boat on water” was Jim Carrey’s idea.
- He does confirm the existence of the lizard warrior on an earlier version of the film that would serve as a second villain. The studio opted to keep things simple.
- They knew from the start Sonic would have a human co-star. They considered a group of tech gifted teens or a secret agent before settling with Tom. They wanted it to be someone Sonic would look up to and see as a hero.
- They put them against Robotnik and the military because he feels Sonic should be a little anti-establishment.
- The Olive Garden reference wasn’t product placement and they didn’t get paid for it, it was just a joke. It somehow found it’s way into earlier in the film while Pat wasn’t on set.
- The Zillow thing was though, it was added at the very last second.
- Originally the townsfolk were going to help in the final fight, but it was deemed too absurd.
- The mushroom world is both a reference to Mushroom Hill and a jab at Mario.
- There used to be a biger chili dog reference, with Tom offering Sonic one at the bar when he started feeling sad. He ate his and Tom’s chili dog in two seconds.
- He thinks friendship and found family is a big theme in the series and he wanted to show that with Sonic becoming part of Tom’s family by the end.

Angie Feret, a VFX artist that worked for the Sonic Movie, gives us a LENGHTY breakdown of a Dr. Robotnik scene in the Sonic Movie, and how it was done.
It begins at 3:27, and ends at 25:02. If you like Adobe After Effects, this should be an interesting watch for you!

Don't think about how Sonic liked and trusted Tom and Maddie most because he saw them being nice to animals like him.
Don't think about how when Sonic thought about going to a safe place, his first instinct was going to Tom's
Don't think about how Sonic specifically refers to Tom and Maddie as his family from the start
