Might as well take this opportunity to talk about flavour text. One of the toughest aspects of this whole process was finding flavour text! Portal is a rich source of extremely quotable text, but looking through references and finding fitting quips was time-consuming

When it comes together, though, it's great.

First land include: the bridges. Just cause of artifact theme - but I don't even run any animation to take advantage of the indestructible xD These are just tapped duals. For most lands I didn't bother reskinning them, but still doodled some art.

Other early include: the gels! It was important that they be artifacts and that they be the right color. The red one giving haste and the blue one bouncing made for somewhat limited choices. I had Boots of Speed for a while but kept thinking Greaves would be better xD

Didn't end up using Greaves, because they weren't red! (considered using them for the Long-Fall Boots, but that did not make the cut in the end). Liquimetal coating fits really well flavorfully, but has somewhat limited applications in the deck if I'm being honest xD

One of the first things I wanted to include but also went through the most variation was the personality cores. I initially tried random artifacts, then the bobbleheads from the Fallout set, but in the end the deck was a tad low on creatures, so I went with the Reconfigure Equipments from Kamigawa.

So last week on my friend TappyToeClaws's stream I played a new commander deck.

Inspired by friend of the stream Robbie (who recently did the same thing with Ranni/Elden Ring), I decided to do an entire proxy reskin (godzilla style) deck.

I started by deciding to make Breya into GLaDOS from Portal and to go from there. I was looking for something with a deep trope space to explore, that I personally like, and that people in general would be familiar with. Portal seemed a perfect fit.

What I ended up with is 82 cards using this simple frame I designed, with pencil-doodled art in the art box: 63 nonlands and 4 utility lands, all with Portal themed names and in several cases flavour text; 15 colour-fixing lands with the frame and art but keeping the original names; and also 18 basic lands that were just basic lands (no reskin).

All merfolk study, but Floran spends more time at it than most. Ze has tons of mathemagical theorems in the works, and can cast a few spells (not zir priority). Zir support fish Delbut is zir oldest and closest - but by no means zir only - friend.

Casimir carries the MOST authority on the Council of Pearls - not because he's the smartest or oldest, but because his specialty is Voice-of-Authority magic. He's at least smart enough not to overuse it. He thinks he should be the Peerless instead of the current Peerless.

Polyxène is a polymath, versed in numerous musical instruments and also in electronics. She listens in to the surface airwaves for inspiration. She's a musician in the Peerless's court, but that's just a side gig for her. She's blind.

I don't really have any intention to start using Tumblr to post things. I just don't like the infrastructure of the site. I won't comment on the culture of it. So instead having people who happen to look here find an empty blog, I thought I'd post a link to my webcomic!
