Oh. Thanks. I almost forgot I left those. [ He stood there, awkward and unsure for a moment, before he busied himself with procuring glasses for the wine. Everything was fine – better than fine. He needed to remember that and enjoy this while it lasted. ] Here. You know I don’t have anything too fancy, but who hasn’t had wine in a novelty mug? It adds to the aesthetic, right?

Yeah, me too. [ She tried and failed to hold back a smile at the question. Charlene knew here, with him, like the back of her hand. ] With my eyes closed. But, um, take me at my word on that one. I don’t want to spill any of the wine.

Well, it was an eventful morning. I- [ An unexpected laugh fell out as Cole brought up the ‘aesthetics’ and with it, any tension left in her body. ] Totally. These mugs are #goals and if anything, add to the, ah, earthy tones. I’m picking up...grapeyness. Yup, there’s a distinct body of grapeyness. [ She flashed a grin, reaching out for his hand to guide him over to the couch. Being able to hold Cole’s hand made her feel so happy it was embarrassing. Today though? She didn’t care. ] So [ she leaned against the back of the couch, balancing her mug and canting her head ], have you been doing lots of normal guy things today?

He had to chuckle at her remark, Declan quite had an ego people knew that about him. He found himself a gift from god and he couldn’t understand that people didn’t see it that way. But at the same time he wasn’t good at accepting compliments. It was an inner dillema that had been going on since his young teen years, something he had hidden quite well from his peers. “If only Ms Cooper wasn’t married to Mr. Cooper.” He made a dramatic sigh. “I would have gotten those bakery gifts from the gods for myself.” Cause age was just a number after all. Yet his whole demeanor changed when Charlene mentioned his family. Declan liked to think he got along with his family, and in a way he did. His family wasn’t disfunctional. But at the same time he didn’t feel like he was very much understood by them, they didn’t put the effort into getting to know the real him. “They are still alive.” Guess that was the most important. “Anyways-” He said as he tried to change the topic. “Any recommends of bakery goods I should sneak away?”

Charlene let out a laugh as he sighed, imagining the absolute scandal if Claire Cooper decided to run off with Declan. The town would be in an absolute uproar! Poor Christian was so polite, he’d probably call Declan ‘dad’ without question. The thought made her laugh a little more. “Oh, imagine. You could co-run the bakery with her and all the other moms would be so very jealous. It would be quite the scene and yes, you’d have a never ending supply of sugary treats.” Here’s hoping that Mr Cooper wasn’t going to overhear them. She couldn’t help but notice the way he changed when she asked about his family. Of course the subject change was about as subtle as a brick. Charlene would have done the same thing though. Whenever her mom came up in conversation, she still felt herself stiffen to this day. Family could be a tough topic so she wouldn’t press him, for now. “Well, that’s what’s most important,” she smiled. “Recommendations? Well, you’ve come to the right place since I’ve had the perfect view of the snacks table all night-,” if by ‘snacks table’ she meant her ex boyfriend but c’est la vie-, “You must try the star shaped cakes with the little glitter balls on them. The meringues, of course and do not leave without swiping a few tarts. They have the names of famous actors on them and everything.”

I considered leaving once. After high school. If it hadn’t been for Michael and Isobel, I would’ve followed you. I mean - I mean I would’ve followed in your footsteps. You know, to see the world or whatever.

“Careful, you wouldn’t want me to feel special now do you.” Declan teased. Though the image of these kids being so desperate seemed amusing to him. “Oh man I hope there are some snickerdoodles left cause I could use a bite.” He may have rushed a bit before getting here. “I certainly am impressed.”

“I’ll try to tread very carefully tonight then, just in case another compliment slips out,” Charlene smiled. Declan had always been a very easy person to talk to, to be around even if she did feel a little guilty over the way they’d lost touch. The way she’d lost touch with him, truth be told. “There’ll be something worth grabbing on the snacks table. Mr Cooper’s wife baked for the big night so you know they’ll be delicious. Yup, it’s really something.” She paused then, taking a breath before asking- “How’s the family? I feel like I haven’t seen them in forever.” Because, of course, she hadn’t.

I’m sure that Robbie’s playlist was absolutely bopping, as the children would say. Honestly, I think it should be only the top hits from the 90s. Everyone loves the Spice Girls. As much as I don’t like students taking over chaperone duties, I’m glad I didn’t have to break up that little display.

Yes, in theory. It definitely could have been something of a masterpiece with at least a little guidance. This DJ is on thin ice. ---Oh god, did that sound really adult? I’ve only aged one year today and here I am sounding like someone’s mom. Still! The 90s would have been bopping, M- Alison. The important thing is that it’s gone no further.

“Why thank you for the compliment. It’s a good thing I’m not running for the prom king then.” He said on a teasing tone. “You look stunning yourself, did the extra effort I see.”

“They are a rarity from me but for you, any time. If only for the sake of the fragile hearts of the current candidates. They baked so many snickerdoodles for the win, you know,” Charlene joked back before smiling, ever so humble. “I couldn’t disappoint the fans. They do love a comeback.”

[ an embarrassed but happy laugh ] God, I cannot handle you right now. Um, yes, actually. Believe it or not, I’m actually having a lot of fun. Kinda crazy, right?

A true tragedy. Although, I would never slander the party planning prowess of Ivy O’Conner as she did truly blow us out of the water at the time. Did you see they roped her in to pass the prom queen crown out? Very cute idea, one former queen to the next. Do you have a fave to win?

It’s the combo of ‘booty’, ‘big’ and ‘shake it’ in various comparisons that is really just…troubling. I think there may be a few students who are taking all this seriously, but…

Horrifying. I’m horrified. At this rate they really should have just let Robbie live out his dreams of playing his prom playlist here. I could have screened it. It always come down to a ‘but’. I mean seriously, did you see Connie DeRosiers and Chris Andrews? Thank god that Faye Montgomery could break that up by being ‘in the way’ before either one of us had to.

Charlene only wanted Rachel to have a good time tonight. A special, memorable senior prom that she could smile back on years later or through a hangover tomorrow morning. That was the only reason that Charlene was here tonight (she’d repeated this to herself every time she found herself sneaking yet another look at Cole Atwood).

It was no secret that her own senior prom (their senior prom) hadn’t been the magical, remember-it-for-the-rest-of-your-life night it should have been and that was Charlene’s own damn fault. Which she knew, she did. The conversation she’d had with Rachel earlier had been the most honest she’d been about it, about Cole, since they’d broken up. Since she’d run away. Since since since...

‘What if he still loves you, too? Would that be so bad?’

Charlene wanted so much more than hateful hook ups, than tears and cold shoulders. She wanted so much more than a rare stolen moment of peace, of truce. Cole deserved better, he always did. He deserved her honesty. It was all she could think about now as she caught another deliberate glimpse of him, devastatingly handsome and kind and rough around the edges still. Charlene wanted to tell him everything and she wanted him to love her back, still. She did.

That’s when she saw Rachel and Joey. He was holding her hand, they were walking out to the dancefloor. If Char didn’t know any better she’d they were together. She--- But whatever she was thinking was lost at the sound of that song. That damn song.

Just like that she was right back under those lights, dancing with him, her heart so heavy and guilty. She was living a hundred years in the future, heart broken with each sway, tears threatening to well as she clung too tightly onto him. She couldn’t do this. That’s what she’d said then, so out of the blue, lies readied on the tip of her tongue to hurt him. To make him move on without her. Cole deserved better.

Charlene couldn’t help destroying everything she touched, couldn’t she? And what, she was going to do it again? Cole was supposed to hate her- it’s what she deserved.

Their eyes met. They were thinking the same thing, they must have been. Their prom night, her betrayal. The chance she never gave them. The insecurities that won out. The lies. Charlene hurt him so much... Suddenly she was moving, eyes torn away from Cole as she pushed past whoever, pushed her way outside, gulping in air in the near deserted streets.

She couldn’t do this.

This time though, this time, Charlene wasn’t going to get to run away.

All we have is the family way, huh? As much as I may or may not have complained along the way, I’m grateful you dragged me through the whole process. No one I would have rather done it with.

You’ve always been a big sister to me, you’ve always been a shoulder to lean on. I can’t even remember how many times I’ve come to you for help, so just– Just know that I’m here, too, Char. I may not have as much experience, or any kind of real answers, but I’m here. We’re family. [ squeezes her hand and smiles ] Love isn’t selfish. At least it shouldn’t be.

[ takes a deep breath ] I guess it’s time to get this show on the road. Let’s do this.

Never fails even if, on occasion, we might want it to. [ smiles and brushes a strand of her pretty, pretty hair ] I'm grateful that you let me drag you through this whole process. I mean, you had maybe 3% of a choice at least. Me too and I'm really excited for you, Rach. I hope you have a perfect night.

Of course, I'm always going to be here for you even if I--- I mean, I know sometimes I'm not very good at it but I try to be. I love you, Rachel and I know, I know you're here. I don't know what I'd do if you weren't, answers or no answers. [ squeezes and smiles right back ] I meant it though, you are entirely the smartest person that I know.

Okay! Final checks? Hair, makeup, shoes, purse- do you have your purse? Alright, go! Go go, have a very romantic, starry journey to senior prom with Keith Salvatore.
