Whatever floats people’s boats, but just like how translators have preferences readers are also going to have preferences. I’m no translator and I’m aware of how tough of a job y’all have despite what style you use and I’ll be forever thankful to you. I think it’s great that there are different opinions and styles.

As a reader, I think my personal preferences are translations that are closer to the original or more literal. Of course this style takes time to get used to, but this is also how I come to learn cultures that aren’t my own. When I read about Japan then I will want to read about Japan, not American-style Japan. When I read about China then I want to read about China, not American-style China. There are distinct feelings that I get from more literal translations that I don’t get from localized ones, and they’re absolutely great. Now that I know quite a lot about Japan, I’m not sure Japanese people would say things ‘Jesus Christ’ or ‘for Christ’s sake’, for example.

the moral story is that you can never make everyone happy. People who love you will stay and people who don’t love you won’t. But likewise we also cannot stay for everyone so we better just do our own thing.

the thing you need to realize about localization is that japanese and english are such vastly different languages that a straight translation is always going to be worse than the original script. nuance is going to be lost and, if you give a shit about your job, you should fill the gaps left with equivalent nuance in english. take ff6, my personal favorite localization of all time: in the original japanese cefca was memorable primarily for his manic, childish speaking style - but since english speaking styles arent nearly as expressive, woolsey adapted that by making the localized english kefka much more prone to making outright jokes. cefca/kefka is beloved in both regions as a result - hell, hes even more popular here
