Digital Report
In this experiment, the task was to write an e-mail to me, with just the word “Hello”, using a smartphone.
My participants were my neighbors: a woman at the age of 72, a retired History teacher who has graduated at UFC and worked in primary and secondary schools all her life; and a man at the age of 25, who does not have an academic degree and who works in a technological enterprise, selling software programs to other enterprises.
The woman did not even have a smartphone. Her phone was a simple one, just to her make and receive calls. She said she did not have the minimum idea of how to use a smartphone and, because of that, she did not have one. So I borrowed mine to her. She did not have an e-mail, so she used mine to try to accomplish the task. As she did not know how to do the task, I have taught her. She took 10min and 54 seconds to do the task, and she only did it because I did not stop telling her the steps, since she simply did not know how to use the smartphone. She had many difficulties in touching the screen and making the commands work, especially while typing the letters. She said the keyboard was very small and she could not see the keys properly, even wearing glasses.
On the other hand, the man had no difficulties at all to do the task. He simply took his smartphone and did the task in 09 seconds.
In conclusion, it was clear to me the difference between someone who is a digital native, or almost, and someone to whom the technology is something practically unknown.  Age takes a great role in being familiar with technology or not.

(by Elton Martins)
Se eu fosse um garoto,
Mesmo que só por um dia,
Eu pularia da cama de manhã
E vestiria a primeira roupa que visse, e sairia
Tomaria cerveja com os caras
E paqueraria as garotas
Eu iria para a cama com quem eu quisesse
E nunca seria confrontado por isso
Porque ficariam do meu lado.
Se eu fosse um garoto,
Eu acho que poderia entender
Como é amar uma garota
Eu prometo que seria um homem melhor
Eu a escutaria
Porque eu saberia o quanto dói
Quando você perde alguém que você queria
Porque ele não te valorizou
E tudo o que você tinha foi destruído.
Se eu fosse um garoto,
Eu desligaria meu telefone
Diria para todo mundo que está quebrado
Para pensarem que eu estava dormindo sozinho Eu me colocaria em primeiro lugar E faria minhas próprias regras Porque eu saberia que ela seria fiel E estaria me esperando voltar para casa Para casa Se eu fosse um garoto,
Eu acho que poderia entender
Como é amar uma garota
Eu prometo que seria um homem melhor
Eu a escutaria

Digital autobiography
Concerning how I have learned English, I consider that I have really learned the language in regular English courses, even though I have been studying English since my 5th grade. I have always studied in public schools, in the municipality of Quixadá, and I have never had an English teacher who had a degree in English. Until today, it is difficult to find graduated English teachers in public or even in private schools.
When I entered my first undergraduation, which was Portuguese, at State University of Ceará, in Quixadá, I started my first English course, at Núcleo de Línguas, which lasted six semesters. At this time, the year was 2009, there were not many technological devices to learn English, or at least I did not have access to them.
I had a physical dictionary – Oxford Escolar para Aprendizes Brasileiros de Inglês –, and this dictionary had a CD-rom, whose program I could install in my laptop. So I learned a lot of pronunciation and phonological transcription with this program, because there were the British and the American pronunciation available for the user to hear. Also, there were the CDs from the textbooks – the collection was English File – 2nd edition – and I used to hear them in my laptop. This helped me a lot to understand and absorb the sounds of the English language.
When I came to Fortaleza, in 2013, I continued my English studies at Casa de Cultura Britânica – intermediate, upper-intermediate and advanced courses – for more six semesters. This time, I continued to use electronic dictionaries and to hear English CDs, but also I have started to watch YouTube videos in English. I used to watch them with no subtitles and this helped me to consolidate my fluency.
I also took many courses at Inglês sem Fronteiras Program. There was the electronic website and I learned a lot in there. There were videos, audios, proficiency exams samples and we could record our voices and practice our pronunciation.
More recently, I have subscribed to many streaming services and I am completely in love by them, because I watch movies and TV shows in English with English subtitles and every time I see a word that I do not know, I pause the video and search that word in my online dictionary – Cambridge Dictionary.
All these technological resources have been influencing how I teach English today because I always indicate my online dictionaries to my students, I share the audios of our textbook with them and I usually indicate TV shows or movies or YouTube channels to them.
I believe that teaching English effectively using technology depends a lot on what devices the school you teach in has available. I would love to teach using a digital board or using at least some slides, but this is not possible in my reality. I think the teacher needs to show the students that they can really improve their English using technology because this is a way to have more contact with English. For example, watching videos, TV shows, movies in English is a very clear way to maintain contact with the language and, consequently, to improve English listening and speaking abilities, as well as speaking with people from English speaking countries. Internet has become the world much more interconnected and it has become easier and easier to interact with people around the globe.
