i'm looking for the rarest weezer song i remember. it's called Ex Girlfriend, i think i heard it in 2000 when i was at college, and the opening lines are- "in his dusty house/ in his dirty clothes/ seated in a town on the verge of extinction/ struggling with the tune , so alone he composes/ a bittersweet ditty 'bout an ex girlfriend". google hasn't resulted in anything even 13 years on. help! -Mark

Just did some research on this and apparently the song your looking for is actually called Paint By Numbers by Self. This song has been commonly attributed to Weezer, which makes sense because the vocals do sound like early blue album demos, but still have a lot of non-Weezer qualities. The song is here, but just because it's not by Weezer doesn't mean you can't enjoy it!

My Info

I received this single from cuomover last week, after wanting it for a very long time. The artwork was the big thing for me to get because I’d only found really terrible resolution uploads of it online and wanted to scan my own in better quality. The copy I have, unbeknownsed to her when she ordered it, has no back to the artwork, and I don’t actually know if it should or not. Was it a paper sleeve for the CD? I’ll have to get another copy to be sure. Regardless, this promo has the Radio Remix versionfound on Pinkerton Deluxe and the Live & Acoustic version also found on Pinkerton Deluxe of Pink Triangle. The remix was, well, remixed by Tom Lord-Alge, a prolific mixer working with other bands like The Rolling Stones, Coldplay, Green Day, and more. The version of the Live & Acoustic track on this promo is actually shorter than the one on Pinkerton Deluxe, cutting off Brian (?) introducing the song. This was recorded on November 6, 1996 in the cafeteria of Shorecrest High School, duringa performance Weezer was doing in part with 107.7 - The End, after a student won a radio contest, having them preform being the prize. The imported name for the disc is “Pink Triangle (Unreleased Single)”, which I think is really cool, giving it a rarer quality.

It was sent to radio stations as a promo for single release only.

The song was remixed in order to give it a more radio-friendly sound in preparation for its release as a single. When the band went in the studio to change the song, it was determined that the bass line needed some reworking. At this time, then-bassist Matt Sharp was away beginning sessions for a second album for his side projectThe Rentals, and was unavailable to record. The band brought in bassist Scott Riebling to replace him and record the bass sound. This was also done for the two B-sides. Likewise, Cuomo changed some of the lyrics and vocals for “Getting Up and Leaving”.

Promo singles including the remix and acoustic version from the Shorecrest High gig were sent to radio. The song did not fare well on radio - possibly due to the repeated use of the word ‘lesbian’ - and Geffen Records opted not to release a retail single. The two B-sides remained in the vaults until the 2010 deluxe edition release of Pinkerton, and were considered to be ‘holy grails’ by many fans in the years prior.

Here's my collection as of March 15, 2012. Since then, I've gotten a bunch more stuff. I'm gonna start posting today, not chronologically, just whatever comes up. I'm planning on taking something (a single, cassette, etc.), and making a post or 2 about it, what it is, what's on it, and why it's cool. I think I'm gonna scan them, maybe take pictures? I don't really know yet, tumblr is a weird format for this kinda thing and I wish I could make a website, but this is cool enough. Maybe that's for another time. This will just be mainly pictures, I think. Well that's that, be ready for more cool stuff in the future. =w=
