NEW VAPE EXCISE TAX IN CANADA - FAQ

Q: WHAT IS THE NEW VAPE EXCISE TAX? A: Earlier this year, we talked about a potential vape tax hitting our markets. The Government of Canada's 2022 budget plan revealed their intentions to put an excise duty on all vaping products. Unfortunately, this tax has been confirmed to begin as of October 1st this year. This will affect the cost of product for users all across Canada, as this is a federal tax. Provinces will also have the choice to opt-in an additional tax on a provincial level. In today's blog post, we're going to be taking a look at how this vape tax is going to affect costs.

Q: WHEN DOES THE NEW VAPE TAX START?

A: October 1st 2022 is the regulated start date of all NEW manufactured inventory. Online Vape stores and Vape shops will have until January 1st 2023 to sell off non stamped vaping products. All new inventory coming into Vape stores will be Tax stamped with the cost built into our pricing.

Dragon Vape is focused on providing its customers with tax free products for as long as possible, however as of January 1, 2023 it will be illegal to sell any vape E-Liquid products without a Tax Stamp in Canada.

Q: HOW MUCH IS THE TAX ON E-LIQUIDS?

$1 per 2 milliliters (mL), or fraction thereof, for the first 10 mL of vaping substance in the vaping device or immediate container

$1 per 10 mL, or fraction thereof, for amounts over the first 10 mL

This impacts all products with E-Liquids and Vape Juice, including disposable vape pens, vape pods and DIY products.

Q: IS VAPE HARDWARE TAXED?

A: No. The new excise tax is only applicable to products that contain E-Liquids and Vape Juice. Hardware, accessories, replacement coils and tanks will not be impacted.

Q: HOW MUCH WILL E-LIQUIDS COST?

A: E-Liquid and Vape Juice pricing will be as follows:

30 mL Pricing + $7 60 mL Pricing + $10 100 mL Pricing + $14 120 mL Pricing + $16

Q: HOW MUCH WILL VAPE PODS COST?

A: Vape Pods pricing will be as follows;

$1 per Pod in a pack.   Example 1: Stlth / Allo / Clix Pods will move from $14.99 to $17.99 for 3 Pods per pack. Example 2: Vuse Alto ePod and Relx replacement pods will move from $13.99 to $15.99 for 2 Pods per pack.

Q: HOW MUCH WILL DISPOSABLE VAPES COST?

A: Disposable Vapes pricing will be based on the amount of E-Liquid in each unit.

Example: Mr Fog Disposable Vape pens would move from $24.99 to $28.99. Each Mr Fog disposable vape pen holds 8mL of E-Liquid which is a $4.00 Tax increase.

Q: IS IT CHEAPER TO SMOKE?

A: NO! Vaping is not only cheaper than smoking, according to Health Canada:

"Vaping is less harmful than smoking. Many of the toxic and cancer-causing chemicals in tobacco and the tobacco smoke form when tobacco is burned.

Vaping products do not:

Types of Coils

Coils are the essential part of your vaping experience as they are the component in your vape that creates the vapors we inhale. While there are a staggering measure of vape coils accessible for various vapes, they are completely implicit generally the same way. They are composed of an external packaging, produced using metal. Nichrome

This is very similar to Kanthal, but is composed of two metals rather than three. It is also a thinner wire and heats up quicker, so it can be used for sub-ohm coils more easily.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is used as a vape coil wire. It can be used in straight wattage mode, or with temperature control vaping. This wire is widely available, has a quick ramp up time and holds its shape well.

Titanium

Titanium wire is thin, easy to work with and can only be used with an e-cig that has a temperature control function. It will not work or perform in straight wattage modes. So if you are looking at coils and see one with Ti or any abbreviation of this and you don’t want to use temperature control vaping, avoid these coils.

Nickel

This is another temp control only wire, it doesn’t work with wattage modes. It is made of just one compound, nickel. It is a thin wire that is very pliable, so if you are building your own coils it can be difficult to get uniform coils that hold their shape.

Different types of coils

Vertical coil

These are the most popular types of coils. It will be a singular wrap of wire, in a coil shape running from the bottom of the metal casing to the top. The wicking material will be wrapped around it so the air moves through the center of the coil wire.

Dual coil

This is the same as a vertical coil, except there are two wraps of coil wire, usually side by side. When we start to move past just one wire coil, it is all about surface area. If you have double the number of coils, you have double the elements heating your e-liquid and producing more vapor.

Triple coil

Again, the same as a vertical coil, but there are three of them. Even more surface area, these will be sub-ohm coils and will produce large amounts of vapor.

Multiple coils

In terms of this guide, this means more than three. Yes, there are vape coils with multiple wire coils, some eight and upwards. They have a massive surface area, will be very sub-ohm, specifically for DL vaping and will use high powers and produce huge clouds of vapor.

Twisted coils

All of the coils we have spoken about so far are a singular strand of wire wrapped into a coil. Twisted coils have multiple strands of wire, wrapped around each other, or braided around each other, then made into a coil. Again, this is all about surface area, expect great flavor from a twisted coil.

Mesh coils

With mesh coils we move away from strands of wire. These vape coils are wire, but not in a coil, they literally look like a piece of mesh with small holes. They have massive surface area, can be higher resistance or sub-ohm, and are great for maximum flavor.

Net coils

A variation on mesh coils, these are very similar but with bigger holes so it looks like a fishing net. Again, massive surface area and great flavor and vapor.

With the weather practically warmer than ever, vape users are likely to discover that heat & the sun play more of a role in your vaping experience than you’d expect. With things like nicotine & batteries at hand, you can never be too safe when enjoying your vape experience. There’s nothing worse than an overheating battery, or a ruined e-juice thanks to heat. Today we’re going to be taking a look at five ways that you can vape safely in the summer! A Lot of these tips go hand in hand with each other & you will definitely notice some crossover in between these! #1 - Don’t keep your device in your pocket when it’s hot! As convenient as it may be to just throw your device in your pocket for easy on the go use, in the summer that might be a little risky. Aside from the risk of you possibly firing your device, or having your e-juice leak, you run the risk of overheating the device. Vapes use lithium batteries (we’ll be talking about these quite a bit in this post) which when overheated for excessive periods of time can lead to you burning your leg or the device catching on fire. This is a VERY RARE occurrence as most devices have overheating protection, but it is always better to be safe than sorry. #2 Don’t leave your device in direct sunlight! When you’re on the backyard patio puffing away, you’ll likely end up placing that device on the table in between pulls. After a couple minutes, you pick up your device and realize it’s much hotter than usual, take a hit and get a mouth full of juice. This happens too often for many, but this is very preventable! When our devices are exposed to direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time, this can cause a variety of things. For starters the heat can change the consistency of your E-liquid in your pod, causing your device to “spit”. This can lead to things such as your E-liquid thinning out or losing its consistency & flavour (which we’ll talk about in our next point). On top of this, your device battery runs the potential risk of heating up more than it should. #3 Keep your E-Juice stored away At its core, E-juice is really a scientific mix of different ingredients that have been properly dosed to deliver a certain level of nicotine and flavour. Therefore, it is important that we handle our E-juice with care and consideration, even when storing it. In the summertime, this is especially true as too much heat and sun can have some pretty bad effects on E-liquid. It is ideal that you keep the temperature of your liquid under 37 degrees celsius. When juice is exposed to heat for too long, you don't run the risk of overheating, but you do run the risk of things such as less potency in the nicotine rating, loss of flavor & discoloration. Ideally, you should be storing your E-juice in dark, room temperature spaces such as cabinets, drawers or purses & backpacks. #4 Don’t vape in water! This one may seem obvious, but it can get extremely tempting to take a puff off your device deckside in the pool, or while you dip your feet in the water. Simply put, it’s not worth it. Vapes are battery powered devices, just as a phone or anything else would be. Even the slightest bit of water in a vapes battery circuit can cause irreversible water damage. Even if the battery does somehow survive, you can kiss that pod or coil you had on that device goodbye. Water and coils do not mix and you will most definitely be treated to some not so tasty dry hits. #5 Do not leave your vape equipment in the car! There’s nothing worse than getting in a burning hot car on a sunny day and sweating away til that hot AC finally turns cold. Now imagine leaving your vape or E-liquid in there all day for hours on end! By doing this, you are putting all your equipment at risk at once. Everything we already mentioned in the points above have the potential of happening at a much greater risk. The last thing you want is your device overheating and something bad happening while you’re driving, because you had your device in the car for 9 hours. At the end of the day, these tips go hand in hand and they can all generally be avoided the same way. Keep your gear out of direct heat and sunlight, and keep your gear out of the water's way. MTL vs DTL Vaping

By restricting the draw and requiring a two-step inhale, mouth-to-lung tanks are classified. The vapour is drawn into the mouth and then inhaled into the lungs. Although mouth to lung devices are often familiar to beginners, this does not mean that they are the only options available to them.

Inhalation tanks designed for direct inhalation of vapour facilitate looser vapours that are directly inhaled into the lungs. Direct-to-lung devices are known for having larger batteries and producing more vapour than mouth-to-lung counterparts. This makes them popular with shisha users and more experienced vapers.

It ultimately comes down to your personal preferences and needs to determine the right device for you.

You might want to consider a mouth to lung device or tank if you are a beginner or want a device with less vapour production. Many options are available for mouth to lung devices, including pod systems, pen-style devices, and even box mods.

I WANT TO KNOW WHAT SQUONKING IS

When squonking, a device is used that comes with a flexible e-liquid reservoir bottle, which is pressed in order to feed e-liquid into the coils in order to rewick them.

2021 Canadian Vaping Regulations

This is because Health Canada recently updated the vaping regulations, restricting the maximum level of nicotine to 20mg/mL, cutting the initial percentage by a little more than half. Now, this news may distraught you, or make you wonder whether you’ll ever receive that sweet head-buzz again. But before you start protesting the regulations, here’s an low-down of where it’s coming from. 50mg of nicotine is said to be the same amount of nicotine that a pack of cigarettes holds. This makes the entire purpose of vaping counterproductive as it is intended to help you quit smoking, not prolong your addiction. Reducing the nic percentage to 20mg may sound like a big leap at first. But after a few days, you’ll begin to adapt and your nicotine tolerance will also decrease, balancing out your system by slowly lessening the level of nic in your body. Also keep in mind that the lower your tolerance, the bigger the buzz. So low tolerance is a good thing, contrary to popular belief.

An Introduction To Vaping For BEGINNERS

THE TANK AND COILFirstly let's talk about the tank and

coil

since they will dictate what kind of e-juice you need, and how much power you will need. The two main types of tanks are:

Mouth to lung tanks draws tight, restricting air into the lungs. This simulates the feeling of smoking by transferring the vapour into your mouth before inhaling. As these tanks use high-resistance coils that don't require much power or

e-juice,

the devices themselves can be small, no matter what the tank's size and amount of vapour it produces. Mouth to lung tanks usually produces a smaller volume of vapour compared to direct lung tanks.

If you use a direct-to-lung tank, you should inhale the vapour straight into your lungs. Compared to higher-power tanks, these tanks use coils that have a lower resistance, so they consume e-juice more quickly, but also produce a stronger flavor.

Vapor is produced by the coil head located inside of the tank. It is composed of two parts: a heated metal wire and a wick to absorb e-juice (usually cotton). Depending on the frequency of use, coils should be replaced every 1 - 4 weeks on average due to degrading over time. In order to increase a coil's lifespan, it is recommended that you not run it at too high a wattage or let it get too dry. If you start noticing burned flavors or experience leaking, it's always a good idea to replace your coil. For some tanks, there are multiple coil choices. In most cases, the coil includes a recommendation for the amount of power that should be used, which is printed on the side. The power rating will show you how much vapour will be produced and how much battery power will be required. Coils are integral parts of most new pod systems, so like the coils themselves, the

pods

need to be replaced if the coil needs to be changed.

E JUICEAlso known as Vape Juice, E-liquid is made up of four main ingredients:

vegetable glycerin (VG)

propylene glycol (PG)

food flavourings

nicotine (if applicable)

It produces very large volumes of thick vapour, because high VG e-liquids are thicker than lower VG e-juices. As a result, they are ideal for direct-to-lung tanks with larger coils. Higher PG e-liquids are thinner, cause less vapour, but produce a stronger throat hit. Because of this, they can be used with mouth-to-lung tanks that have smaller coils. In mouth to lung tanks, it is better to steer clear of high VG vape juices as, with the thicker liquid, the cotton will take longer to wick into the coil and will likely run dry more quickly than it should. Direct-to-lung tanks shouldn't be filled with high PG vape juice, since a thinner liquid combined with a larger coil might lead to leaks. The choices of vape juice flavors are extremely subjective; some vapers prefer to stick with tobacco flavors because the taste is familiar, while others like something a little different like fruit, mint, or dessert. Every vaper has different flavors they prefer, so when finding the flavors that work best for you, go with your gut and try out multiple flavors. Smokers should carefully consider what tanks they use and how much vapour they produce to obtain appropriate nicotine levels, since a higher percentage of nicotine means a stronger throat hit and more overall intake. Most commonly, direct-to-lung tanks should only contain 3mg of nicotine, with 0mg–6mg being the most recommended amount. Having an excessive amount of nicotine can cause throat irritation and a bitter taste in direct-to-lung tanks. To ensure you're getting the right level of nicotine, try a lower strength--the majority of vapers eventually use lower strengths of vape juice, but will likely discard those higher in nicotine. Due to the smaller amount of vapour produced by mouth to lung tanks, they can be used with higher nicotine e-liquid, such as 12mg and above. In the mouth-to-lung vaping market, nicotine salt e-liquid has become more readily available, emulating smoking more closely. Tobacco contains nicotine salts, which are naturally occurring states of nicotine that provide a faster rate of absorption and a smoother inhalation. This is why nicotine salt e-liquids can be found in much higher concentrations, but they should only be used in vaporizers that generate small quantities of vapor. You should avoid using high-level nicotine salts in direct-to-lung devices.
