#( mobile post. )#also because Christian is telling the story it's entirely possible is just all HIS opinion of what happened#we don't hear it from anyone else#I think Satine was a smart fucking person#I'm CONFIDENT in her intelligence and her street savvy#and the way she's sometimes portrayed makes her sort of one track#and she's given glimpses of intelligence but they're overshadowed about discussions on how BEAUTIFUL she is#and how she seems portrayed as this love sick woobified sex kitten#I just think there may have been bias in the story telling#and that Satine 👏 deserved 👏 way 👏 better#▐░ ᵒᵘᵗ ᵒᶠ ᵗᵉᵐᵖᵗʳᵉˢˢ || ooc

unpopular opinion under the cut !!
so i know this is kind of... odd for me to say, considering who i am writing for. but, just, you know, stick with me. moulin rouge is about the love story between christian and satine. okay. but i don’t really.... support their love story. if that makes any sense? and just let me give my reasons as to why. like, i’ve sat down and THOUGHT about this for awhile. i just didn’t decide on it-- time and thought went into this.
...but i don’t really ship christian and satine for a number of reasons and i’ll tell you why. first off, it was a very INSTANTANEOUS love. which, isn’t it’s biggest fault. there are so many films that do this so i’m not THAAAAT fazed but it’s always a present annoyance of mine. and christian says right in the beginning he’s never been in love before. and i think, as many people do with their first loves, he fell in love for the first time and he wasn’t ready for it. but i’ll talk about that later a little bit.
on the elephant medley scene, he insists to satine that they SHOULD be in love. and even after she repeatedly says no, he still presses and presses. even if he didn’t think she was being sincere, he should have let her be. because love requires respect and, right off the bat, he wasn’t really respecting her choices. he just sort of kept pressing that they should be in love. and he even sort of guilt trips her? he says “it was silly of me to think you’d fall in love with me”. don’t guilt trip ya s/o’s, people. for me, at least, that’s a huuuuuge warning flag and a big turn off.
and after they DO get together, there are so many instances where christian is jealous and takes it out on satine a lot-- even though he keeps reassuring her that he isn’t. he even prevents her from doing her fucking job a lot. dude, you know she was a prostitute. you knew she had business to do. you KNEW what you were getting into. the main thing is, he knew her career and every time she’s about to DO HER JOB, he gets weird. he gets possessive and panics and obsesses over it. i’m not saying he should have been okay with his girlfriend having sex with other people, but that’s LITERALLY HER JOB. she had that job long before he came around and it was a reason she was like “we probably shouldn’t date, dude”. but christian didn’t listen. and that’s where we have the whole tango de roxanne scene too.
the argentinian says right off the bat “if there is no trust, there is no love” and that “jealously will drive you mad” BOTH OF THESE THINGS ARE ACCURATE TO THE SITUATION AT HAND. i don’t think christian trusted satine. and his jealously was driving him to great lengths of anger and instability. does that make sense? i just feel like he was ill prepared for it.
and then after satine breaks up with him, fOR HIS PROTECTION BY THE FUCKING WAY, he obsesses and stews over it. that’s not healthy. i’m not saying he should have given up and acted like it didn’t happen. but he also didn’t respect her wishes when it was over. he kept showing up at her work and kept screaming to see her-- to the point he was getting thrown out of the moulin rouge. i don’t think that’s healthy. and that brings me to the performance. christian physically goes to the show and attempts to corner her. she tells him to leave and he doesn’t leave. he continues to pester her. he continues to go against her wishes to get answers he wants. marie is off to the side, yelling at him that satine needs to go on stage and there’s christian, PULLING ON HER ARM AND YELLING IN HER FACE.
i don’t find that entirely stable behavior.
NOT TO MENTION that once they’re on stage, he shames her in front of all of her coworkers and her employer/father figure by calling her a whore. yes, she’s a prostitute. yes, she sells herself. yes, her job is to make men believe what they want to believe. BUT THAT’S HER JOB. she does it for fucking survival and to support herself. satine, i think, has had some pretty troubling times and she already sees herself in such a negative light. i can’t imagine how deep it cut for the one person she thought would never hurt her, to shame her like he did. i just??? it makes me physically mad. and that’s part of the reason i find him completely emotionally immature for a relationship of this caliber.
if you love someone, you don’t call them names. if you love someone, you respect their wishes even if you don’t agree with them. you don’t push. you don’t guilt trip. you TRUST them. you listen to them. you love them. you know? i just don’t think christian and satine are the most palpable of matches.
HOWEVER, because their relationship is such a big part of the film, i’m still going to post stuff for it. i just don’t think it’s an entirely healthy dynamic. that’s all.

“I see we’re making our visits a weekly ritual.”
ASK BOX SENTENCES || ACCEPTING !!
❛ And why shouldn’t we? Do you expect me to talk to THOSE people? ❜
Satine dips her head in the direction of an absolute MOB of men. She could practically SMELL the testosterone from where she and Lep stood, surveying the commotion from the perimeters of the Moulin Rouge’s dance floor.
Delicately, she reaches up to her hair and tucks it behind her ear, looking toward the buffoonery before her as she does so. Woman had their skirts held up to their waists and their rears pressed tightly to any man within distance. ( Work was work, she supposed. ) Granted, Satine did ADORE the attention she received from men-- even like that. But this time is time that she cherishes. It’s a pause on her expectations. It’s a break, of sorts. One she DESPERATELY craved.
❛ How am I to have an intellectual conversation when someone would rather-- ❜ Satine smiles as she stops herself and represses a chuckle with a small shake of her head. She looks to the smaller and raises a brow to fill her silence. ❛ Quite unlikely, dear heart. Don’t you think? I NEED this ritual. ❜
