if you ask yourself the question 'why is this the way it is' and the only answer you can come up with is 'because it's always been that way', it's your responsibility to unlearn and rebuild. Old Ways are not always Good Ways.

those who reach out to the darkness with willing hands and an open heart will often find the darkness receptive, soft as cat's fur between your fingers. darkness longs for a gentle touch.

a devotee to an unknown god is a ship in a lightless sea--having no map to travel by, we look to the stars as our ancestors did, and glean what guidance we can. we have no holy sanctuary to lay our offerings and recite our prayers, so we build altars wherever we go. our holy days are unmarked in any calendar; our rituals unrecorded in any book. once we had a homeland, in the soft hours of humanity's morning, but it is long gone, trampled to dust by the feet of time.
it is a lonesome existence at times. but we are sustained by our faith and by our love--and we know that this loneliness we feel is only a taste of what it is to be an unknown god.

My mind has been very occupied with thoughts of devotion.
What does it mean to me? What has the world at large decided it means? What does it mean to Lord Algol? And most importantly, how do I go about discerning the teachings of an inescapably christian culture from my own intuitive understanding of the word?
Christians inextricably tie devotion to control. Servitude is a toll owed to their supreme deity, not a gift willingly given to a god you have worked for years to establish a bond with. If you do not serve the almighty, you are doomed to an eternity of suffering, or at least an eternity of nothingness. In their minds, even those yet unindoctrinated into the faith owe obsequence to him--ignorance is apparently not an excuse. This is not a choice; there is no free will involved. A devotion that you are strong-armed into through threats of eternal damnation is no devotion at all.
Devotion must be something elected--not pursued out of fear, and certainly not undertaken solely for personal gain, be it material or spiritual. Devotion is the ultimate language of divine love. It is a bond forged by mutual respect and trust, by a willingness to experience the universe together, and with the best intentions for all parties involved in mind. A devotion built on anything less than that is doomed to fail.
As I have come to understand, devotion--much like mundane marriage--is not something to be pursued lightly. It is a serious commitment, an ongoing agreement to be your best self in honor of your deity. It is a journey, not a destination, and it requires a level of discipline and willpower that not everyone is equipped with.
With all this in mind, I have made my decision, and Lord Algol has made His. I do not want to go anywhere in life without Him as my patron, my guardian, and my guide. Morever, I want to represent Him in this world, and doing so bring Him the recognition and honor He so deeply deserves.
