A general mish-mash of stuff that interests me. (Admittedly it turned out a bit more Roger Allam-y than planned, but I'm more than ok with that).

I know it's (very) early days, but, my god, it feels good, and refreshing, to have a government that seems to want to work with, and for, other people, rather than against, well, everyone who isn't them.

Phew!
I just hope we haven't used up our championship quota of penalties in one match!

And of course I'm assuming that the Green Party (4 seats) will get the same amount of media coverage as the Reform Party (4 seats)?
(Yes, I appreciate that the Reform Party is very responsible for the Conservative losses, but the point remains.)

You also have to appreciate the bookending of the general election by it absolutely chucking it down in Downing Street.

I honestly never thought I'd live to see the day that my constituency returned anything other than a Tory MP.
History indeed.

Oh God. Only two constituencies have declared so far and the number of votes the Reform Party is getting is already far too depressing.
(To be honest, it's moments like this that make me a little bit thankful for the First Past the Post system.)

Apologies, but I feel like I may have jinxed Spain just a tad.
My mother asked earlier if any of the teams at Euro 24 had been playing well at all (I don't think she's been impressed so far!) and I replied that Spain were the only ones I could think of.
(Sorry.)

I've just spotted two (count them...two!) Vote Labour signs/placards in one of the truest, bluest constituencies.
Between that and the myriad of Lib Dem ones (and the volume of literature we've received), the other parties are definitely smelling the blood in the water round here.
It's going to be fascinating to see what happens.
P.S. TODAY (18 June 2024) IS THE DEADLINE FOR REGISTERING TO VOTE.

Wow. Yet another terrific Steve and Reece bait and switch.
"...after a series that has boasted guest stars such as Natalie Dormer, Vinette Robinson and Mark Bonnar – it has been confirmed that they are the only two people who appear in it." (from The Guardian preview)
Cheeky bastards!
All in all a near perfect ending to a remarkable programme. Self deprecating, funny, bittersweet, moving, and very meta. Trying to spot all the references will take a fair few views, I think.
Bravo!

I think that the major problem with the Tories over the past few years is the feeling that there are no grown-ups in charge.
What I mean by that is that in the past (I'm thinking about the 80s and 90s) there always seemed to be at least one Tory grandee (Clarke, Heseltine, Major, for example) whose opinions were respected and who often spoke out when things weren't going right.
But now it feels like there is no guiding hand in the Party, too many "yes men" surrounding the Prime Minister, and no dissenting voices. No-one with the experience to take things by the scruff of the neck and say "what the hell are you doing?!"
In mean, how in God's name do you manage to screw up an opportunity to appear statesman-like on the international stage? To actually look Prime Ministerial, standing next to Presidents and Chancellors and leaders from across the globe, and decide, nah, I'd rather go do a pre-recorded television interview that's not going to be broadcast for a couple of weeks. It would be funny if it wasn't so embarrassing, for him, and more importantly for the country and all the veterans.
If that's not clear evidence of a lack of good judgement and planning, I don't know what is. How do you expect people to think you are the right man to lead the country?
Just when I think they can't possibly do anything more stupid someone in the Tory party says "Hold my beer."
And worryingly, there are still people who think they are the right party to be the Government. *sigh*

Just when I thought this general election couldn't get any better/worse/funnier (delete as applicable).
Cue: Nigel Farage
Last week he wasn't standing in the general election because going to the States to support Trump was more important, apparently.
Trump gets convicted.
Farage - hey what do you know, it actually turns out I have some spare time on my hands, and the British general election is (suddenly) too important to ignore. I'll stand, and take over leadership of this political party. (presumably so he doesn't have to go through some official vetting process where they may just bring up the fact that he has stood for parliament seven times, and failed to be elected. Seven times.)
Fickle bastard.
