SMO AND SMM - the difference
SMO and SMM are the two hot topics of discussion in the emerging world of digital marketing. The perception about them differs from person to person with lots of confusions arising in their meaning, actual usage and the purpose they serve.
SMO (Social Media Optimization) and SMM (Social Media Marketing) are very crucial elements of Digital Marketing. Social Media is one of the biggest online channels that a business can use in order to promote itself.
SMO refers to the process of organically reaching out to people on Social media platforms. It refers to making use of all the available ways to reach out to the masses by a product, brand, event or even servicing agencies. The platforms involved include Bookmarking sites, Social networking sites like, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Quora, Youtube, Reddit, Blog submission sites and the like. The main elements of SMO include creating engaging content and visually appealing posts to attract the target group thus promoting customer engagement with the business. This also aids in implementing online reputation management(ORM), which is nothing but an SMO strategy to make sure that the bad reviews or comment about a business/product stays down in search results thus maintaining the reputation. In SMO, organic reach depends on post engagement which can be through likes, reactions, comments, and share. In order to ensure high post engagement, it is important to post quality content and to post it consistently. Facebook, for example, has an algorithm named Facebook Edgerank(which is meant exclusively for SMO).
SMO is also a very important factor in the area of SEO(Search Engine Optimisation) and affects it on a large scale. The reason is that the search engines nowadays are increasingly relying on the recommendations of users of social media networking sites like the Reddit, Youtube, Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest etc. It is also connected to the Viral Seeding or Viral Marketing where the credibility of the brand is built via social media platforms.
SMM, on the other hand, refers to paid advertisements on Social media platforms. When it comes to SMM, a business needs to be updating advertisements on its social media platforms. The main objective of using social media as a marketing tool is to reach out to people who are looking for the services that a particular business/brand has to offer and also be visible to those who hardly have knowledge of the products. Out of all the tools that help rank a business at the top of Google search, the majority of them are social media dependent. For a business, this may be helpful in targeting their potential Leads/Customers. For individuals, it helps in popularizing their content and increase their chances of becoming a social media influencer. Some points to keep in mind for effective engagement through SMO and SMM are,
Post frequently. Ideally around 8–10 posts every day. Try to post it during the morning, lunchtime, post office hours etc. when people are presumably free. (The timings may vary in accordance with your target audience)
For SMO, follow as much as you can, join as many groups as you can. Don’t just stop with following, also make sure you to like their posts. This maximizes participation and promotes future post engagement.
Another thing that often fails to meet the eye is that on posting an advertisement (SMM) you can invite the people who like, react or comment on your post. Sending invitations can be a very personalized way of reaching out to people.
It is always effective to look for a professional when it comes to business. For such effective digital marketing services, Visit, Digital Marketing Services | SEM, SEO, SMM | Moshi Moshi | Bangalore
