Completely out of context since I found it on a non-gg page but it applies so well
When you're angry at the characters, the story is well-written. When you're angry at the writers, it is not.

My thought is that it was someone or some people in prison. I noticed in the flashback with Nick, as teens when Rio got out, his voice and gestures were that of the Rio we know today. They weren't in the flash backs before prison
Still havent learned where Rio gets his demeanor and swag from. It ain't from Nick.

SHE NEVER CHOSE HIM TO BEGIN WITH. In 4.07, she did not choose him! The confusion and exhaustion comes from believing she did
i don't get why we got all the weight of beth making a choice in 4.07 to immediately jump ahead in 4.08 to an opening scene where rio was hanging beth out to dry with the secret service and then threatening her family. like, if beth chose you, give her a reason to keep choosing you? give her the resources, protection, knowledge to make that choice functional and successful? like, you can argue that beth doesn't deserve it, but ultimately rio asked her to choose him and gave her the opportunity after everything, so he should at least commit as much as he's asking her to do.
once phoebe walked in and told beth that they were rounding up her, annie, and ruby tomorrow, there was really no other option for beth—not with the police on standby and rio set to meet her in the next few minutes. she was always going to choose her and hers over rio.
but then they followed that up with her angry "what do you think?" i can only imagine that was in response to the hanging out to dry, family-threatening, but i don't understand rio's motives, especially after he's been pulling her closer and closer and letting her peek behind the curtain and see beyond the façade.
i know some people are theorizing that he intentionally threatened the family to get her to turn him in so that he could utilize her the way nick utilized him—but why would that plan have to be a secret? why wouldn't he loop beth in so she was part of it? beyond that, when rio got into nick's car, rio was the one that asked, "what do we do about her?" so I'm not confident at all that this was a grand scheme.
i really just think that they spent an entire episode showing us beth making a choice to have her reverse that decision in the last 30 seconds. if they wanted to have her betray him, i honestly would've rather had her commit and do it at the bank. that still could've paired with the exact same backstory and imo would've worked better with rio knowing about the wire all along and knowing that she was set to do it and exactly how to react and what the fallout was going to be.
usually I'm very much here for the cat-and-mouse merry-go-round two-steps-forward-one-step-back, but this one didn't land for me at all.

Hate how when Stan pitched his plan to Ruby she was like "that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard" but when Beth was pitching her plan about printing/washing the cash, Ruby's like "better call into work" with basically no real info or hesitation.
#i love Ruby but c'mon #i know it's the writing, long live the hills!

Less cleansing but honest - Things I have not liked in GG:
Stereotypes - this is not a progressive show
The incredibly old troupe rinse-repeat of storylines (fanfics have fresher & more feasible storylines): loves, it’s not hard to write brand new shizz
Rio doing things that just don’t make sense! The man has flipped his (apparently shared) criminal empire repeatedly, I find it very difficult to believe he’s stupid, I find it difficult to believe Nick is the genius of their family & I find it VERY difficult to believe Rio wants to keep Beth on the hook, she tried to murder him, twice, & has coldly sold him out too many times
Beth 1-3:
1. Making Beth a victim since 2:1, I inhaled S1 because Beth flipped the script, she wasn’t going to allow the circumstances of her life make her a victim but now she’s the super victim, refusing to take responsibly ie: ‘I didn’t have a choice’ but at the same time making active choices, like remaining with a deadbeat louse & total loser of a husband because, well, why? Is a show about women trying to tell us being a single woman is a bad or terrible choice? This smells of serious patriarchal bullcrap & toxic victim white feminism
2. Letting the homemaker who is so ‘good’ she couldn’t bring herself to hurt a bullying rapist (the man who attacked HER OWN SISTER & got Annie arrested) have zero moral, societal, emotional or mental consequences for shooting her Latino mentor, business partner & lover. Also showing she doesn’t have a shred of remorse for harming him, nor take accountability for her actions because Rio is a person non-grata due to being written as a stereotype
3. S1 Beth bossing up vs. S2/S3/S4 Beth being presented as a ‘hard-done-by-white-woman-reacting-scared-or-power-hungry-whilst-flirting-with-a-dangerous-but-exciting-criminal-but-she-stays-safe-by-denying-her-true-nature-because-she’s-got-a-husband-to-cling-to’ cliche on rinse, repeat. Not what I signed up to watch
Ruby getting shot & no one giving a damn (yes I know it was because the actress needed surgery but surely a different storyline could have been created for a WoC)
I’ve been watching the show since S1 aired on Netflix & loved it’s humour & obvious comment on the disparities in society, but it still has representation problems & many of us haven’t recovered from the trauma of seeing S2 E13.
So, in a show where I’m meant to route for the 3 women, I’m now actually rooting for the emancipation of what we’re meant to believe is the bad guy: Rio. He deserves to be free of his two rotten eggs & to live his very best life, he deserves to be chosen by someone worthy of him - Beth is just not it. Stan deserves a brighter future. Ruby needs to always choose Stan over Beth & she deserves a friend who doesn’t make selfish choices. Annie deserves better everything.

4.08 was such a stupid and nonsensical episode. At this point it feels like the writers are purposely trying to tank the show. All the things fans would ask not to happen, happen and vise versa.
I used to love Beth but now she is just nothing but excuses. It goes from "but I have kids" to "I didn't have a choice" Oh and let's not forget "you need me" ...broken record.
It's been said but that scene where they get arrested...I can't find the words. As a poc that is traumatizing and I cannot believe how nonchalantly they just slipped it in like it's nothing. Idk what's worse, the violence or the white suburban woman on-looking like that...and "getting away" with her own crimes at his expense...
Speaking of, Nick! I was all set to like him but that last scene of teen him and Rio, is poc crime on poc crime. No it didn't have a violent aspect but it didn't need to. It's still poc hurting each other and they're "family"!?
The stupidity of thinking the plan to set up Gene with the fake cash was gonna fool the ss? That's all I could think during that scene.
Rio is threatening kids now? Not just Beth's but kids in general?
I could go on and on.
On a positive note, when Gene first started confessing, I thought maybe he had put the club in Stan's name and was going to pin it on him, given the convo in the last episode. So I was relieved that was not the case. Can't help but to think it will still have some implications though. I guess we shall see.

I told y'all BETH DID NOT CHOOSE RIO in the last episode, and now she f*cked him over AGAIN! He even said it himself this time. Now all I'm seeing is how terrible 4.08 was for many reasons, but a big one is it seems ppl are genuinely shocked by Beth's what, 80th betrayal! Ppl are even saying they don't want to ship them anymore. Yeah because there's nothing left to ship. Sry, not sry.
#that came across way harsher than I wanted #jusy happy ppl finally see #only wish it hadn't taken this long #okay now good night

I. Feel. It.
I'm so tired of this show. This is the millionth time with Beth betraying Rio and getting him arrested. At this point I don't even want to ship them anymore. This show had so much potential on the side of enemies to lovers. There was so much potential on this side but also on the gang part.... Bring in a rival gang.... I DON'T KNOW. Do something other than oh I'm going to play this guy again and send his ass to jail and then he'll find a way to get out. Again.
I AM TIRED.

You guys are gonna hate me buuuuuut...
If Beth really does choose Rio, it will be because now in this situation with him she is "damned either way" and she "doesn't have a choice ". The whole reason she's done half the stuff she has during s3 and s4 has been, according to her, that she fears him. Now that she knows that he knows everything, wouldn't she feel she doesn't have a choice but to choose him out of that fear?
Now she would be afraid of what he might do if she doesn't choose him. Let's be real, what is she gonna answer him like "oh yes I'm going to continue to work for the ss or whomever to bring you down" ? No, that would be stupid and unrealistic for a person in her position. He still has the gun, and if she really was acting out of fear that he might kill her, then nothing has happened to change that. So she is choosing him out of fear and because now that he knows, she can't continue to try to fool him.
Bottom line, if Beth was going to choose Rio, she would have done it by now. I understand feeling like she had to work with the ss for Dean and her family, I really do. But if she chose him, she would not have asked 3 different ppl to kill him. She would not have given the okay to Fitzpatrick to pull the trigger. The only reason she called it off was to serve her own purpose. If she didn't need him alive to make the deal with the ss, she would have allowed that man's life to be taken.
This one is just an extra but arguably, she would have also by now, told him about the ss and they would have come up with a plan together. She could convince him to help her come up with a different fall guy, and they could have secretly worked together against the ss.
Did she do any of these things? No. She continued to lie, to try to have his life taken, to set him up. She would have made that bank drop and watched him be arrested just like she would have looked through that telescope and watched him bleed out.
She isn't "choosing" him. Choosing implies a want and a desire. She does not WANT to now be on his side. She had a choice before, and she did not choose Rio. Now, the choice she made has been taken away because Rio knows, and her plan didn't work. She had two choices before, and now she is left with one, which doesn't really make it a choice.

Just watched 4.07 on Amazon. I have a bunch of brio comments but first let's talk about non-brio things:
• Annie's gestures: (pulls lips) ugh? (Twiddles fingers) Ugh? Hilarious
• Ruby calling Beth out on "at abuelitas house"
• Ruby's hair is slayin' 👸🏿
• Yes Stan call Beth oooouuuuttt! Tell the truth👏🏽
• What was up with that teaching Phoebe how to be a mom montage? Don't get me started
• Dean, just 🛑 trying to do things
• The diner scene made no sense. The way the waitress was acting would never happen
• Rio dropped an Arnold Palmer clue I think. Like he got the scoop on that drink from the hitmen? Idk maybe I missed something
• Um, weren't the SS agents sitting at the booth behind them in 4×05? Maybe he was so entranced by Beth, he didn't see them, but, you know what, okay.
• Stan has become a great liar!
• Ruby's "way to take a finger for the team"...iconic
• Rio, did another "dont, do that."
• So Gene's gonna force R&S to be in his business, then?
• The fact that Greg lied about why he wanted to pull Ben out of Saint Anne's...gross
• Stupid SS guy didn't even bother to learn his name blamed Phoebe for ruining the mission, what an ass
• Rio did another "so what's it gonna be?"
• Most importantly YES FUCKING YES FUCKING YES RIO FOUND THE WIRE! RIO KNEW! I'M SO FUCKING HAPPY
• ...then all that is ruined because he gave her ANOTHER fucking chance ugh wtf??? Why Rio.. fuck. You know what, I just I can't

Perhaps an unpopular opinion but I've been wanting to say it so I'm going to now. Disclaimer: I love Beth, she's my fave so far but I must say that when I saw the "they like you" seen (and honestly wasn't surprised because I predicted they would put it on the episode it makes sense) my second thought though was "why?"
The only reason(s) it would make any sense with what we were shown are
1. He is "playing" her or has something else up his sleeve. Like the trying to guilt her to his side like I've seen suggested
2. As my fiance pointed out on our rewatch together, that his family understands the privilege that she has in society and that could benefit them
3. His family just realized that he obviously isn't willing to let her go so they would rather keep her close to keep an eye on her
Otherwise, a whole lot must have happened off-screen! I mean literally nothing happened for them to like her even "for him" but especially to be accepted into the family business!? I really hope some other reason is revealed and its not just because its the Beth show. I would hate if it was really that easy for her. I want her to choose the family business but have to work for it and actually prove she is an asset.
