A Pirate’s Life for me

(A/N: This is probably horrible. Based off the live action version.)

Chapter 1

Alice, the second-born child of Vice Admiral Garp, was unlike their older brother and their nephew. Alice was content living a simple and quaint life. They had grown sick at the age of eight, fighting day and night to stay alive, their illness never got better. Alice had to stay indoors and restrict much of their time to resting. Alice at times got bored but liked the quiet life they had. They spent most of their time reading or writing. Adventure novels or history about pirates were the main topics of the books that occupied the bedside table. A record playing soft music to fill the silence of the small room. The journal filled with small stories that Alice’s mind created or of their dreams from the night before.

Their father hated to keep Alice locked away but Dragon had left and Luffy was a lost cause. Garp had hoped that Alice would be healthy enough to start marine training, Alice was in their twenties now. He believed they had the resolve but Alice’s health was still a problem.

Alice was sitting in their room writing in their journal peacefully.

Peacefully until the door slammed open. A small child, around the age of eight, ran into the room. His curly black hair bounced as he jumped into the bed where Alice sat. “What are you writing? You are always writing.” He whined to them.

“Luffy, I have nothing else to do. Plus, you always leave. My favorite nephew leaves me to die of boredom because he can’t keep away from pirates.” Alice teased, tickling Luffy’s side. Alice knew that Luffy wished to be a pirate, he spent most of his time with a pirate crew down by the docks. He didn’t talk about them much mostly due to Garp. Alice wanted to hear about Luffy’s pirate friends but never had the chance to ask about them.

“What are they like? Your pirate friends, I mean.”

Luffy grinned at Alice.

“Shanks is so cool. He has these scars on his face from fighting someone! He always has new treasure. He is really nice. The whole crew is! You should meet them!” Luffy was jumping up and down on the bed, excitedly telling Alice about Shanks and his crew. Alice has heard about the Red-haired pirates led by Red-haired Shanks. He used to be with the Roger pirates at a young age then after Roger’s execution and the disband of the crew, he started to make a name for himself. He wasn’t a cruel man from what Alice has heard but still a strong and admirable foe.

“Luffy, I can’t leave my room. We both know how your grandpa would react.” Luffy pouted at Alice’s answer. He huffed and crossed his arms, “You are no fun.”

“Hey, I’m loads of fun.”

“I know.”

It got quiet, Alice knew Luffy was disappointed that they couldn’t meet one of the most important people in his life. Alice was frustrated too. Luffy gasped suddenly, “I have an idea!”

He jumped off the bed and ran out the door leaving Alice in confusion. Their nephew was an odd boy. Alice shook their head and continued to write. They wrote of a pirate and a princess, the princess had been locked away in their tower. The pirate had stumbled into the lonely tower whilst running to abade capture. Their meeting was by chance. A silly meeting but one that changed their lives for the better.

Alice wrote their silly little story in their journal. They hummed a soft tune, swaying slightly as they smiled. Luffy burst into the room in a frenzy. “This is Alice.” He was dragging a man behind him. The man’s red hair was bright under his straw hat. His brown eyes sparkled as he was dragged by the small boy. He looked at Alice and smiled. “I have heard a lot about you, princess.” Alice looked at the man that was now standing in their room.

The infamous Red-haired Shanks. Luffy had brought him here. “Hi.” Alice whispered, closing their journal and smoothing out their silk nightgown. Shanks chuckled, “No need to be shy, darling.” Alice narrowed their eyes at the man. “I’m not shy. Just not used to visitors. Few people come to my prison of solitude.” Alice smiled at Shanks.

Alice had to admit Shanks was a handsome man. His strong jaw speckled with slight stubble, broad shoulders, and a wide chest barely covered by his white shirt. Shanks noticed Alice’s wandering eyes and smirked. He sat on the bed in front of them. “What’s this?” He gently grabbed the journal that was on the bed in front of him.

“My journal. Please give it back.” They held out their hand. Shanks gave the journal to Alice. Luffy watched as they interacted. “I wanted you two to meet.”

The two adults smile at the small child. Their eyes met and they nodded to each other. Their arms reached for the boy to bring him to them. The three now sat on the bed giggling. “Luffy tells me that you study pirates and pirate history.”

Alice nodded, “Their adventures are my adventures. I can’t leave but I am fine with that. I live through their stories.”

“Wow. That’s kind of depressing.” Shanks chuckled. Alice pushed him with a laugh. “I’m sick. I’m not supposed to go on daring adventures, oh scary pirate man.” Shanks pulled Alice to him and swayed their bodies left and right.

“Red-haired Shanks has captured the beautiful princess. How ever will they escape his grasp?” He smiled widely, his scars wrinkling. Luffy laughed and tried to pull Alice from his grasp.

“Ah! A brave pirate has stepped to the challenge. Can he save the beautiful princess?”

Luffy tried to pull Alice but he couldn’t separate them from Shanks. The man laughed, “You shall never escape! You are mine…mine forever.” Alice froze, Shanks words making her very uncomfortable. Alice started to freak out, thrashing in his arms. Shanks thought Alice was playing along, playing the part. Then Alice began to scream, he let go, startled by their outburst. Alice backed away from the pirate, trembling with tears streaming down their face. Shanks slowly scooted toward them, humming lightly. “Hey, darling. It's okay. I’m sorry, I did not mean to scare you. I played my part too well, I’m guessing.”

Alice nodded. Their lavender eyes filled with tears looking at Shanks, their lashes clumped together. “Can I come closer, pretty?” The red-haired pirate wanted nothing more than to comfort the trembling person in front of him. Alice crawled to Shanks and laid against his chest, Luffy joining them in their space. “Are you okay, Ali?” Luffy looked up at them, he knew Alice was prone to night terrors and panic attacks but he had never witnessed one. “I’m okay. Just need a minute.” Alice was still shaking, the other two could feel their tremors.

Shanks nuzzled his face into the top of Alice’s head, planting a gentle kiss on their head as an apology. “Didn’t mean to scare you, pretty.” Shanks muttered against their head. Alice nodded, holding Luffy tighter to them. Shanks held them both against him, humming a soft sea shanty. “Nothing can console me…but my jolly sailor bold.” Alice sings along to Shanks’ humming.

“You know that one, songbird?” He pokes their side. Alice smiled at him.

“It’s one of my favorites.” Alice’s shaking had stopped but they stayed curled up against Shanks, keeping Luffy in their arms. Luffy smiled at Alice and Shanks, happy that the two most important people in his life got along. Shanks smiled down at the young boy, “Do you want to tell Alice what happened yesterday?”

Luffy grinned and started to excitedly tell Alice about the pirates that Shanks and his crew fought. Alice felt concern for Luffy, a boy his age shouldn’t be near the men that he was describing. “Bang! Yassop shot the guy.” Luffy laughed.

Alice chuckled nervously, “That seemed pretty scary.” Luffy shook his head, continuing his story. His loud excited chatter filled the room as the two adults looked down at him fondly. His loud voice got the attention of the older man who passed by the door of Alice’s room. The three did not notice the older man poking his head into the room until he slammed the door open. Alice jumped as Shanks held them and Luffy tighter. The older man, who was now revealed to be Vice Admiral Garp, stood at the door fuming. “Now, what do we have here?” He asked in a low voice. His steel blue eyes filled with rage at seeing his child in the arms of a pirate.

“I told Luffy to bring him here. I wanted to meet him.” Alice lied for the sake of their nephew. Shanks looked to Alice in shock, “I was the one who suggested it, sir.” Luffy looked down in shame as they both took the blame for his actions. Garp looked at the two and sighed, “If I see you here ever again, I will throw you into the highest level of Impel Down myself.” Garp left the room leaving his threat hanging in the air. Luffy groaned, “He is sooo…boring! I can’t do anything!” Alice and Shanks laughed.

“Luffy, he is just trying to keep us safe. He only knows Shanks by reputation alone. Think about it from his point of view, he comes into my room seeing you and I with a wanted pirate. We are lucky that he didn’t just arrest Shanks.” Alice says with hast. They understood why their father reacted the way that he did. He did not want Alice or Luffy to be harmed in any way. Shanks nodded in agreement.

“Alice is right. A lot of people see me as a bad person, Luffy. I’m a pirate. They see me as such.” Shanks ruffled Luffy’s hair. Luffy crossed his arms and muttered under his breath.

“I can’t hear you, stinker.” Alice picked him up. He giggled in their arms. “Let me go! The pirate king demands you!” Luffy wiggled in Alice’s grasp, Shanks chuckling at their antics. Alice put Luffy down, gasping lightly, “Ow.” They held their side. Luffy looked up at them, concern on his face. Shanks brought Alice close to him, holding them close as they shivered in pain. He looked down at them, smiling softly.

“You okay now?” Alice nodded, pulling away from the man. They smiled at him in thanks. They said their goodbyes as Luffy walked with Shanks back to the docks.

Alice sat on their bed alone in silence. The room now feeling like a prison cell. Silent, cold, and empty.
