How To Make Your Own Fanfiction Archive, In Just Ten Easy Steps

As the go-to "person who knows about AO3" for quite a few people who read fanfic but aren't really linked-in to wider fandom culture, I've fielded a lot of questions about how to do certain things on AO3 to which my best answer is "you should really start your own archive!" I think, in general, more fans starting their own small archives would be a net good for fandom. AO3 was never meant to be the only archive for all fandom, or even the main archive, and the more spread out and backed up we are the more resilient we are.

But of course I have to be reminded that a lot of fans these days don't really have any idea how little "you should start your own archive!" really involves. (Also, that I should practice what I preach.) So I am now making my own fanfiction archive, and writing up this post as I do it to tell people how to make theirs!

Go to https://neocities.org/ and sign up for an account. It only needs a username (which will also be your website address), password, and email. Pick a username that will be related to your archive's title!

Choose the free account option (if you ever need more than what the free account offers for a text-only archive, you should probably look into graduating from neocities.) This should take you to a menu of "how to make a website" tutorials. You should do them! They're useful skills. But let's get your archive running first.

Hit the big red Edit Site button, or open the menu under your username and select "Edit Site".

Select the "Index.html" file to edit. You're now in an HTML Editor. Congrats, you're a web developer c. 1999!

Find where it has text between the < title> tags. Delete the filler text, and put in the title of your new archive. This text will be what shows on the tab when people go to your archive.

Find where it has text between the < h1 > tags. This will be big header text at the top of your page. Put the title of your archive here again. If you have no experience with HTML, you should read over the other sample text. It covers the basic basics very well! Once you've done that, you can delete everything else between the < /h1> tag and the < /body> tag. Save your index.html file.

Get an HTML file for a fanfic you would like to add to your archive. If it's on AO3, you can use the html download option built into AO3. If you have it as a word processor/google docs file, you should have the option to save as an html file. Save that html file to your computer.

Go back to Edit Site on Neocities and go to "upload". Find the html file you saved and upload it. (You can also drag and drop files to upload.)

The file you uploaded should now be showing with your other neocities files. Right-click on the title and select "copy link".

Go in to edit index.html again. Under where you put your header text, type < br> < a href=" . Then paste in the link you copied. Then type "> Then put in the title of the fic. Then type < /a> . Then save the index page again when you're done. You can do this for every fanfic you have.

Congratulations! You now have your very own personal private fanfiction archive that you are 100% in charge of and make all the rules for. It's at least as good as half the ones I was reading on when I started reading fanfiction and will serve its function well as a way to let people read your fic. You can link to it from anywhere you want! (Including your AO3 profile.)

I’m imagining a Pokespe RPG — story-focused where your actions have SERIOUS plot-altering consequences. You’d also get to customize the pins on Red’s hat… probably my favourite aspect of the entire idea so far.

This is an AU where Red and the other Dexholders are in college and trying to solve some local supernatural mysteries! As they find out, a lot of the Dexholders are the subject of these mysteries themselves, such as Green…

I haven't read the XY arc yet because I can't find an english translation free online (TvT) but oh lordy lord do I have So Many Thoughts about Green (m)'s Pumpkaboo.

Like, this is the guy who at 11 years old was possessed by a Ghastly for two weeks straight and then literally almost died to a Gengar's Dream Eater because an insane old woman wanted to murder him. And then two years later that same Gengar temporarily blinded him while the aforementioned insane old woman attempted to murder him again. I find it hard to believe that he would actively seek out and catch a Ghost-type Pokémon after going through all of that.

So my headcanon is that the Pumpkaboo is a therapy Pokémon that was gifted to him by someone close to him (in my mind Red and Blue) during/after he returned from his initial training in Kalos.

Because Pumpkaboo, when I think about it, would make for a really good therapy Pokémon for Green.

• Several of Pumpkaboo's Pokédex entries state that it helps lost spirits to move on to the afterlife, so it's a Pokémon that likes to help/aid people by nature.

• Pumpkaboo is a dual type of Ghost and Grass, meaning that it has a physical weight/tether that can be touched (its pumpkin) - opposed to Ghastly/Haunter/Gengar which is made 100% of gas and can't be touched.

• Pumpkaboo's pumpkin also produces light, which would help when in the dark, or waking up in the dark after a nightmare.

• Being a Ghost-type, it has a type advantage over other Ghost-types, and can also negate nightmares & bad dreams.

Imagine for me: Green waking up after a particularly bad nightmare to the room filled with soft glowing lights, Pumpkaboo hovering by his side chirping at him to make sure he's okay and give him something to focus on. Then when Green's calmed down from the initial spike of fear and adrenaline, Pumpkaboo floats into his lap and sits there like a big warm weighted blanket and Green cuddles it close for comfort and eventually manages to fall back asleep......

I just. Green and his Pokémon. Yeah....

You guys ever think about how the only times we see Green (m) in short sleeves in the manga is in the flashbacks of his training with Chuck and in FRLG arc?

You ever think about how wearing long sleeves was probably a defence/comfort mechanism after the trauma Chuck put him through, and how him wearing short sleeves in FRLG symbolises how - just as hanging out with him and Red helped heal some of Blue's trauma - hanging out with Blue and Red helped Green heal from some of his trauma?

You ever think about how being turned into stone by Sird probably undid that healing, hence why he goes back to wearing long sleeves in HGSS arc and beyond?

Because I think about it. I think about it a lot.

I think about this moment a lot.

It's a little moment. Only 5 panels long. Barely an interaction, really. But the implications it has on Green (m)'s character are so important.

This moment is the first time Green and Giovanni meet face-to-face. Up until now, they've only met/interacted through second-hand contact (mostly through Red). Green is upset with himself because he looked up to Giovanni as a role model, because Giovanni was his predecessor as the Viridian City gym leader and wrote Secrets of the Land, and he's taking that out somewhat on Giovanni.

Green is pretty emotional and high-strung throughout all of FRLG, because his grandfather's been kidnapped and he's under a lot of stress in general, but there's something about him being upset over this in particular that feels strange.

I believe it has to do with the fact that Green looked up to Giovanni as a paternal role model specifically.

When you look at the line-up of Green's other paternal role models, it's really not a great list. His actual father died before/when he was five years old, his grandfather lowkey neglected him and his childhood mentor, Chuck, actively abused him. So he's left with very little in terms of a good paternal support figure.

Because Green and Gio had never met face-to-face up until this point, Green was able to seperate the "previous Viridian gym leader and author of Secrets of the Land" from "the leader of Team Rocket". And with all of his other options - put lightly - absolute shit, Green chose to cling to the former as a role model - someone he could look up to and lean on - while opposing the latter.

But now in FRLG he and Gio have met, and Green is being forced to consolidate the fact that his enemy and his last remaining role model are one and the same, leaving him with no viable paternal figure to cling to.

And then, to add salt to the wound, Giovanni disregards Green's upset and throws him into a wall. So Green's not only lost his final potential paternal figure, he's been brushed off and (quite literally) tossed aside just as he was by his grandfather and Chuck.
