#Blog 24: Colour Adjust & Final Layout
2023.3.22
In the graphics on each page, I have added path text that matches the graphics. These words are selected from important sentences in the poem.
I lightened all the colors of the pic- ture, which can keep the picture light and hazy.
Next to the graphic correspond- ing to each poem, I marked the cmyk color of the graphic.
On the last page, the cmyk colours for all patterns are grouped together. Readers can clearly find the gradient of colour.
The pattern on the back of the front and back covers is contin- uous, which allows the content of the newspaper to echo back and forth. Readers can also disassemble it and read it alone.

#Blog 23: Layout 2
2023.3.13
According to the last feedback, I modified my layout and added a certain amount of content.
Modified the font. I changed both the title and author fonts to Optima. This slightly flared serif typeface can convey a soft and elegant feel, and I think this style is very suitable for the depiction of clouds. The font of the main text was changed to Faktum. This is a sans serif typeface with a slightly flattened and curved shape. This smooth arc echoes to a certain extent with Optima, so it will be more harmonious in visual experience.
Added catalog page. Since newspapers are not bound together, the mental retardation of each page can be taken down individually. I redesigned the inner pages of the outermost newspaper. Readers can flatten it alone, viewing it as a poster.
Incorporate text into graphic content. I try to change the path of the text and place it along the outline of the graphic, so that the connection between the text and the graphic is closer.

#Blog 22: Layout 1
2023.3.10
Attemptation:
I tried the first overall typesetting. Helvetica Neue was chosen for both titles and text, a classic sans-serif font that can achieve a modern effect. Author's name I chose a script, but I am still hesitant to use it in the final version due to its readability and
Reflection:
Modify the font of the author's name. The readability and visual style of the handwriting do not match the overall visual style.
The outline of the figure behind can also use the gradient of the outline of the figure in the front, and the blurred effect can better reflect the lightness of the cloud.
The color of the purple graphic is a bit too dark, it can be adjusted.
Some text and graphics overlap, while others do not. Considering the readability of the text and the overall consistency, revisions are required.

#Blog 21: Colour Adjust
2023.3.9
I rearranged the order of these 16 illustrations. I extracted the colors of the sky and clouds depicted in each poem, and divided them into four colors: blue, blue-purple, purple, and purple. According to these four colors, the whole publication will achieve a gradient effect. Readers can naturally feel the color changes of the sky and clouds as they flip through this publication.

2023.3.5
Poem 11: These are the Clouds - W.B. Yeats
This is a poem about clouds at sunset. I wanted to convey a feeling that the sky was getting darker, so the shape started from the top of the picture and gradually transitioned down. I used the same technique as in other images, so that the overall style of the publication can be unified and coordinated.
Poem 15: Two Clouds - Alex Posey
The poem describes a cloud from the north and a cloud from the south who meet in the middle. So I wanted to show the tortuous trajectory of the clouds and the moment of encounter. So I use an up-and-down axis-symmetrical picture to express this kind of meeting scene.
Poem 3: Poems 1913-1956 - Bertolt Brecht
The cloud in this poem is directly above the author's head. Big, tall, white clouds. Therefore, I use blank space to express the characteristics of this cloud. In addition to the blank screen, I continued to use graphic elements from other screens to make the publication screen uniform.

#Blog 19: Research
2023.3.3
After discussing with Michael, he thought that the content of my illustration tends to be streamlined with a sense of humanitarianism, and the graphics look like sculptures. Therefore, he recommended two sculptors to me, thinking that their sculptures and manuscripts would inspire me. So I researched these two sculptors and their manuscripts.
Henry Moore
/Standing Figures and Ideas for Sculpture, 1948 (p1)
/Eight Sculpture Ideas, 1981 (p2)
Most of his sculptures are based on the human body, and are summarized by curved and humanistic geometric shapes. I think his manuscripts inspire me more than his sculptures themselves. He twists, stretches, and hollows out spheres, cylinders, and geometries to make the shapes themselves more interesting and interesting to view from all sides.
Barbara Hepworth
/Oval Sculpture, No.2, 1943, cast 1958 (p1)
/Sketch of the Sculpture
Barbara's sculptures are more abstract. She likes to express the theme by hollowing out irregular geometric shapes under regular geometric shapes. In her manuscripts, the different layers of the sculpture and the way the geometry is rotated are evident.

Poem 19: Love Letter (Clouds) - Sarah Manguso
The poem depicts a situation that has been falling. This falling trajectory connects two different spaces. In the process of falling, you will also encounter icy objects such as ice-gravel. Therefore, I focused on depicting the falling track in the picture, and the upper and lower parts of the picture are divided into two spaces. Small shapes exist in graphics to represent objects such as ice-gravel.
Poem 12: Sonnet 33 - William Shakespeare
There are two suns mentioned in this poem - the real sun and the heavenly sun. So I used oblique symmetrical compositions to reflect this correspondence.
Poem 10: Lost in Heaven - Robert Frost
The blue sky marks and twinkling stars are mentioned in this poem. So I flattened the overall composition. Use thick, wavy lines to represent sky marks, and draw thinner lines representing stars.

Poem 13: Sonnet 34 - William Shakespeare
In this poem, the poet mentions smoke, storm and rain. So I felt a kind of surrounding weather and atmosphere. So I use circular layout and curved lines in the picture to represent the enclosed space.
Poem 9: Stories of God - Rainer Maria Rilke
The cloud in this poem is one that is always wandering. Alone, he meets his fellows in the sky. They have transparent, rose-colored wings, and appear in the evening sky. So I want to reflect the loneliness of the cloud through a lot of blank space in the picture.

#Blog 16: Layout Attemptation
2023.2.17
/ Light Version
/ Dark Version
Attemptation:
In my first foray into typography, I experimented with two different typography styles. One is a light version and one is a dark version. The fonts are Helvetica Neue. In the light version, I used a white background, light blue image color and blue font. I try to intersperse text content between illustrations to make the relationship between pictures and text tight and balanced. In the dark version, I used a black background, colorful image colors and white text. A dark background can highlight the color of the picture, but at the same time it will also make the overall style of the layout stronger. I tried enlarging the image in the frame, which cuts off the original shape of the illustration.
Reflection:
The light version gives the overall layout a light feeling, while the dark version is more intense and bright. Since the theme of this publication is clouds, the feeling of lightness would be more appropriate. Cutting the picture into a rectangle makes it look more like a work, and the text content is like an interpretation of the work. So I am still hesitating whether to cut the screen, or reduce the frequency of screen cuts.

#Blog 15: Colour Attemptation
2023.2.17
I used gradient maps to adjust the colours of the graphics. The selection of these colours comes from the descriptions and metaphors mentioned in the poems.
Blue Version:
Since clouds are in the sky, the main colors that come to mind are blue and white. So I adjusted the black and white in the draft to blue and white. Although it is still monochromatic, it will be lighter than the original version in terms of visual experience. At the same time, a monochromatic pattern will make the viewer focus more on the shape and the relationship between shades. In this version, I mainly adjusted the original depth relationship of the graphics, which increased the details of the picture.
Light Colour Version:
In this version, I used a white background and a fresh light color for the pattern content. These colors are all taken from the description in the poem. I think this colorful approach brings these graphics closer to storytelling illustrations. But I need to find the balance between all the colors to make the combination of the picture visually harmonious.
Dark Colour Version:
In this version, I used black as the background and chose a colour that coordinates with the dark background as the colour of the pattern. I find that with a dark background, colours can easily become bright and stand out, which can make the whole picture look exciting. I'm not sure whether this strong feeling is suitable for the arrangement of the poetry anthology, so I'm still hesitating.
Inverse Version:
In this version, I reversed the original pattern. This makes the whole picture quiet and mysterious. This feeling of calm is in line with the personal feelings of the poetry collection.

2023.2.16
Poem 1: Cloud Appreciation Society Manifesto
The poem emphasizes the importance of clouds - an empty blue sky would be uninteresting if there were no clouds. Therefore, I stacked graphics of different shapes to represent the changeability of clouds.
Poem 2: Introduction - Percy Bysshe Shelley
In the scene depicted in this poem, four distinct areas can be seen. From top to bottom are sky, clouds, water and earth. Therefore, I chose the cloud and the earth to represent in the illustration, and at the same time as a distinction. I used similar streamlined lines to represent these two areas, but used different shades of color and different densities of the lines.
Poem 6: A curious Cloud surprised the Sky - Emily Dicknson
This poem compares the cloud to the skirt of the queen, so I wanted to express the draping of the cloud through a silky and smooth figure.
Reflection: Here are all the graphics I tried today, the last one is still being finalized. I think its too dense lines will be difficult to blend into other graphics. Therefore, in the next illustration drawing, I should continue to unify the painting style.
Overview: I printed the finalized versions of all the illustrations on A3 paper in black and white and posted them all on the wall to see how the composition would look. I think it's visually pleasing to me, but it leaves a lot to be desired. For example, some of the patterns are uniform, but there are still some patterns that are different. So I think in this case, the right visual composition becomes very important
Combination: I combine patterns with streamlined lines, patterns with lines and block faces. In this way, while they are visually coordinated, they also have a change in weight, which will make the reading of the whole book more rhythmic. But these combinations are just my current attempts and they are temporary. When all the graphics are done, they are mixed together again and sorted again.

Poem 4: Fog - Carl Sandburg
The content of the scene in this poem has an obvious perspective advancement relationship, from small to large, from near to far. So I took the advancement of direction as the theme, and the route and process were represented by curves.
Poem 5: As the Clouds that are so Light - Edward Thomas
The content depicted in this poem has strong contrasts, such as light and darkness, light and shadow. It also mentions a small black dot at the center with bright lights shining around it.
Reflection: Here's a full illustration of what I tried today. I found that it is very difficult to express sharp and tough patterns with pastels, so part of my original draft content needs to be revised according to the characteristics of pastels.

Poem 18: Her Bed - Robert Herrick
The poem mentions a silver, plump, soft and swelling cloud which seems like a soft bed. So I want to show a fluffy feeling in a blurred way.
Poem 16: Journal, 25th December 1851 - Henry Thoreau
The cloud in this poem is crimson, which reminds the author of the flow of his own blood. So I wanted to represent the poem by depicting liquid-like clouds, and at the same time I wanted to use a gradient of light and dark red in the colour.
Poem 14: I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud - William Wordsworth
In this poem, the author mentions stars, galaxies and sparkling waves. At the same time they have a sequence relationship. Therefore, I placed the Milky Way at the top, the clouds in the middle, and the ground at the bottom. At the same time, they are connected by a sparkling wave.
Reflection: These are the original drafts of my illustrations, both successful and unsuccessful. The illustrations that didn't continue were because they were all too figurative and didn't match the style of the rest of the illustrations.

#Blog 11: Library
2023.2.8
I spent half a day in the eca library looking through art books relating to type, typography and graphic design and taking pictures that were inspiring to me.
Where a few letters are extremely graphic, others remain in sans serif. This makes the typeface more interesting and at the same time readable. (p1) The centrosymmetrical shapes are represented by thin single lines, which can give a clean and religious feel. (p2)
Graphics, whether interspersed within text paragraphs or defined by their outer contours, give the overall page design a sense of design and add vibrancy.
Flowy, linear text paths can spice up boring typography. At the same time, it also maintains a simple and stylish concept. (p1)
This is a handmade book made of plaster and burlap. The inner pages are made as single-page cards inserted in the middle of the sackcloth. It's a great way to play with rough and modern textures at the same time. (p2)

2023.2.7 Class Reflection
I should continue my current attempt at visual illustration, the more I draw, the better! Then tile them together to observe the coherence between them. Also experiment with different painting materials. After the manuscripts were finalized, they were scanned and digitized, put into a computer to try and change their colors. At the same time, put the text on it for typesetting, and the text will become a part of the overall pattern. This rough texture can be reminiscent of ancient murals in caves. You can try to study the painting rules of their murals.

2023.2.6 Illustration Sketch
I tried to use soft pastels to express the clouds because the outline of the pastels are blurred and they look really like the clouds. Here are 2 images I drew and tried to present the content of the poems.
The first one is about the 'Cloud Appreciation Society Manifesto' which tells us the importance of the clouds and the sky will be boring without the clouds. So I drew different shapes of clouds in multiple layers and show their varieties.
The second one is about the 'Two Clouds' which said a storm comes out of the north and a cloud drifts from the south. And there is a sea in the east.
Here are the effects of the sketches after being scanned. And I would like to edit them in PS and change their colours and contrasts and put the texts on, then try the layouts in ID.

2023.2.5 Flat Plan
In the 24-page layout, I first designed the 22-page inner page. Starting from the third inner page, each poem corresponds to a 1-2 page layout, in which I made a pattern design for each poem. The color text content will be integrated with the pattern and presented in a graphic way. The first two pages are the table of contents of the whole book, in which the representative pictorial elements of each poem are extracted.
