————————————–—————
Part One: Kevin & Joaquin.
—————–————————————
Kevin sighed. He got a mysterious text from an unknown number, saying to meet him at the bus stop. “God, what am I doing?” He thought to himself and looked around. Nothing out of the ordinary... yet. He had a small pistol with him, just in case, although he’d never dare to use it.
A few minutes pass, and Kevin got up to go. “Ugh, screw this. Why did I waste my time?” Betty stood up next to Kevin. “Hey, don’t go. You never know who might come. Five more minutes?” Kevin stared at Betty blankly. “Fine. Only five.”
A green bus pulled in at the station. Betty hugged Kevin’s arm, “This could be it, Kev.” Kevin sighed. “I hope it is.” Lots of people came off the bus, and eventually, Kevin’s eyes lit up. Betty looked back and forth between Kevin’s expression and the ‘mystery man’. “Joaquin! Oh my God!” Kevin ran into Joaquin, leaving him shocked and dazed. They parted and locked eyes. “Hey Kev. Good to see-“ Joaquin was cut off by a passionate kiss from Kevin. Finally Kevin pulled away. “Good to see you too, Joaquin.”
Betty looked back and forth between the two. They said in unison, “So you’re the one that made me come here?” and then looked at each other. “Of course not. It was some random guy with a hat and a beard, also called Betty.” Her sarcastic tone made Joaquin laugh. “Thanks Betty. I owe you big time.” Kevin hugged Betty, and the two left, holding hands. “Hey, don’t leave me here!” Betty cried after them.
“So, is it horrible to be back in Riverdale again?” Kevin teased Joaquin. “Yeah, but you made it better.” They giggled and kissed again. “Hey, is Pop’s still open?” said Joaquin. “Of course! It’s the heart of Riverdale. There’s also a pretty cool speakeasy down there, so if you want I can ask for us to get a VIP spot.” Joaquin looked at Kevin in shock. “You know someone who runs a speakeasy?!” “Yeah, my friend. Veronica Lodge.” Kevin could feel the heat from Joaquin’s serpent jacket reflecting on him. “Oh, i’m hella into that idea. Didn’t know you became such a bad boy whilst I was gone...” They laughed and kissed again.
“Damn, Pop’s really hasn’t changed.” Joaquin said to Kevin. “Dude, you only left for a year!” They laughed as the neon lights of the Pop’s Diner sign lit up their faces and the door bell jingled.

[A Riverdale Bughead Fanfiction]

——————————————————
It’s the nearly the end of summer break. Jug and I went to Sweetwater and spent the whole day there, messing around together. Being there felt good. It was probably one of the last days we’d spend together, as Jughead was moving to Toledo to live with JB and his mom. “Oh Betty, I don’t think i’ve ever told you how much I love you.” Juggy said with a smile on his face. “I don’t think i’ve ever told you how much I love you, Jug!” He grabbed me by the waist and pulled me closer. I rested my head against his chest, hearing his heart beat rhythmically. “Seriously, Betts.” I looked up at him. “I love you, Betty Cooper. I love you so much, and i’m going to miss you so much.” The thought of him leaving brought a tear to my eye. “I love you too, Jug.”
We dried off and went back to the trailer. FP already moved to Toledo, so we had it to ourselves. “Hmm, Betty?” Jughead was on the type-writer I got him for Christmas. “What’s up, Juggy?” “Do you know anyone called Roberto?” “Uhh, well I have an uncle called Robert, but he lives in Sweden. Why?” I could tell something was wrong, the way his eyes frantically searched me. “Look.” I walked over to the type writer, where there was a newly printed message.
See you in Toledo. -Roberto
Someone knew that Jughead was moving. He only told Kevin, Ronnie, Archie and me, so someone must’ve leaked it. “You know, I bet it was Hiram, probably going to buy Toledo next.” “Hey, come on, we don’t know that. Plus, how would he—“ My sentence was cut off abruptly by a piercing noise. I later realised it was the doorbell, and at the door was Toni and Cheryl. “Hello cousin! Jughead, i’m sad to hear you go. Are you still going to be a serpent? Or like, will you make like, a new gang? Ooh! The Toledo Tigers. Mmm! I like that. Has a nice ring to it, you know?” “Bombshell, come on. We just wanted to say goodluck in Toledo and we hope you come back.” Toni squeezed his shoulder and left. “What the- who leaked it? Oh my gosh, my dad’s gonna flip. Now the schools not gonna let me go and-“He sighed. “I’ve messed everything up, just like I always do.” “Hmm, then maybe you need someone, or something, to cheer you up...” I took his hand and walked to the bedroom.
He pulled me in and pressed his lips to mine, slowly pulling off my pink jumper and unbuttoning the white shirt underneath. We laughed, and lowered onto the springy bed. I could feel the heat, radiating off him, and his firm grip on my shoulder sent tingles through my spine. He groaned and I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him in closer. He picked me up and we moved to the kitchen counter, then the couch, and then the bathroom. Our laughter echoed around the trailer, followed by the sound of the water hitting skin.
I lay in the sheets, thinking, what will it be like when Jug leaves? Betty Cooper didn’t want to think of that right now. Not ever. I slowly got out of the bed and walked to the bathroom. It was warm and steamy. I pulled the shower curtain open. “Do you want some company?” He looked at me like I was an alien. Then, a smile appeared on his face. “Oh, Elizabeth Cooper, you’re naughty.” I stepped into the shower and let the water touch my skin. He pulled me in close, and his lips touched mine once more.
I walked to the bus station with him. “Well, this is my bus. I’ll uhh,” He coughed, trying to hold back the tears. “I’ll see you soon Betty.” He kissed me and I could taste the cologne on him, the one I became so use to. “Bye Arch, say bye to your dad for me, okay?” Archie looked at Jughead with a sad smile on his face. “Will do, bro.” “And Veronica, sorry for all the times I accused you of stuff. Just my inner sleuth I guess.” They exchanged smiles and Jughead pulled me in for a kiss once more. I refused to pull away, but he did before I would’ve had a chance. He stepped on the bus. And the bus drove off.
It was hard without him, I have to admit. The people around me made me feel better, even Cheryl which was a surprise. “Oh my god, in the bathroom too?! You guys were savage. I’m gonna miss hashtag Bughead.” Kevin said, still in shock that we ‘did it’ in more places that one.
I got home from school that day and switched on the TV. “Ugh, there’s never anything new.” I was about to walk up the stairs to my room when the presenter on the show said this. “Oh, we’ve just had some breaking news come in, a family of four in Toledo have been attacked by a masked individual who goes by the name Roberto, however their real identity is a lady called Penny Peabody. The family are all alive, however, Jughead Jones is in surgery as we speak. More on that later. Now for the weather...” The presenters voice faded and everything became dizzy. ‘Jughead Jones... in surgery as we speak... Roberto...’ Those three phrases went around and around in my head. Then, everything went black.
“Betty? Oh, Betty! Polly, she’s awake!” I woke up with the biggest headache and I saw my mom and Polly standing over me. “Jughead! Oh my god I have to go and see him!” They looked at me in shock, as if saying that’s the first thing you thought about when you woke up? “Betty, you had a seizure. I found you on the floor next to the TV. I figured it would be about him.” said Polly. I looked at them with confusion. “I have to text Archie...” My mom explained to me the they already know. “They’re waiting outside for you. I told them about your seizure and Archie said he doesn’t mind waiting. Oh, don’t forget to take your adderall sweetie!”
I raced to Archie’s car, tears streaming down my face. I choked out “Let’s go.” and Veronica held me tight as I cried into her shoulder.
We arrived at Toledo General in less than two hours. As I was still in tears, Archie went to the desk and asked to see him. “Room 203. Top floor, kids.” The lady looked at me and probably saw my adderall prescription.
“Room 203. You can go first, B.” Veronica squeezed my shoulder and opened the door. And there he was. Lying with red marks in his arm and face, Jughead lay there. The waterworks were crashing down now, as strong as waves. I placed my head on his chest and heard his rhythmic heart beat again. It brought back memories of that warm summers day at Sweetwater river. Why couldn’t he stay? If I didn’t mention his family he wouldn’t have gone and he wouldn’t have got shot. I was in denial. I choked back the tears and kissed his forehead.
It was 1am when I got home. It was 3am when I went to sleep. It was 6am when I got a call. “Hello?” I was still crying. I don’t think I stopped. “Thanks for visiting me last night Betts.” It can’t be him. It can’t be him... Oh my god it’s him! My mind was racing with thoughts like that, he must’ve thought I was gone. “Hello? Betty, are you-“ “JUGGY! Oh my god i’ve missed you! It’s so good to hear your voice, I thought I lost you and... and... I love you.” Silence when over the phone for a few seconds, before I got a reply. “I love you too.”
And then, the line went dead.
We had these chats over the phone everyday for the next few weeks. As far as I was concerned, we were still a thing. But then I wasn’t getting anymore calls from ‘Toledo General 203’. I got a message from Jughead on Whatsapp. “Hey. Wanna go to Pops? Also, look out your bedroom window.” Before I had time to text back, my subconscious dragged me to the window. And there, I saw Jughead standing on the sidewalk with a bunch of roses. I raced down the stairs and practically jumped into his arms. The kiss seemed like it lasted forever and I tasted his cologne once again. Then, the chats over the phone from ‘Toledo General 203’ were never used again.
I hope they never have to return.
