Evaluation 2
Throughout this module I have researched and undertaken many promotional and curatorial elements of my own work and particularly the end of year degree show. I have been researching and discussing ways to market, promote and curate exhibitions and events and this has been beneficial in regards to my future artistic practice. This research initially relied heavily on physical exhibition visits in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Liverpool. The difference in scale of GoMA Glasgow in relation to Tate Liverpool was useful for my research as I was able to investigate the curation process of both large and small exhibition spaces.
The promotional aspect of our degree show preparation has included online digital marketing and advertising. One of the first tasks that we organized was a two week long Instagram takeover allowing students to showcase their work so far and give a glimpse of what will be included in the final show. Posting on the college Instagram was also a chance to promote our own professional Instagram handles and information, hopefully resulting in gaining a wider audience. It has become apparent throughout this module just how important having an online presence is for artists in this digital age and creating a QR will benefit my work greatly as people will have the chance to connect with and follow my work as I continue my practice.
Collaboration with the Design degree students has played a pivotal role in the curation of our degree show and several meetings have been attended to discuss important elements including invitations and advertising. An invitation list has been accumulated by both the Contemporary Art Practice and Design degree students and these invites will be emailed to our selected guests by the college’s Creative Industries administrator to ensure that there is no breach of GDPR regulations. Alongside email invitations, we also organized physical copies so that each student could personally invite their selected guests.
In order to effectively promote our degree show, we collaborated with Design and Photography students again to create fliers, posters and a newsletter insert to be displayed around the college. A digital version of the poster will also be shown through the college television screens. The design element of these posters and fliers were decided and made by the Design and Photography students as they have the digital knowledge, skills and background best suited for creating high quality imagery that translates effectively from paper to screen.
Overall, this Promotion module has been a beneficial experience and has given me the knowledge to effectively promote and curate our degree show alongside my peers. Taking on the role of the curator alongside two of my classmates has allowed me to understand the importance of both digital and physical elements surrounding the preparation of a show or exhibition and the effort and planning required for an effective outcome.

Meeting with Design Students #3 (Curators) 15/05/23
Floor/board plan moquette;
To help with organising the floorplan and allocation of spaces, Angus made this model of the degree show space to allow us to play around with combinations for the shared and individual spaces.
The shared spaces will have no divider as we are 10 boards short and they will be 3M wide to allow for space between the work of each student. We also have Mercedes style boards which will accommodate six students perhaps with lighter work that can be hung or placed on the thinner boards.

Final space allocation;
As a team we discussed who best fit the profile for individual and shared spaces. We took into consideration people with similar thematic and contextual work and separated them as much as possible so that there was no overlap or confusion about whose work is whose in the shared spaces.

Meeting with Design Students #2 (Curators) 11/05/23
Our team of curators (Myself, Angus and Charlotte) met up with the design curation team and started discussing all elements regarding the show which brought up several things to consider;
Spotlights? Will we be able to install spotlights without effecting other students work who do not want them? should we consider buying our own?
Shared spaces? The lack of boards require that some students share a show space... We were allocated 54 boards in total. This could be problematic so we must decide who needs four walls and who only requires three. The joint spaces will consist of six boards allowing for 3M between each students work.
Spaces - shared(360lx360w) individual(360lx120w)

Curator Role for Degree Show
Several roles were put forward for the planning and execution of our degree show and I volunteered to be that of a curator alongside Angus and Charlotte.
We decided to have our peers send us our degree show proposals and we split each individuals requirements into different sections;
Number of boards required
Lighting required
Plinths required
Electricity required
It was a good idea to think about constructing a 3D model with the final layout of the degree show so that we could effectively allocate spaces considering the above requirements and also thematical and contextual ideas so that the work placed in shared spaces would not clash.
Things to consider as a curator;
Curating the show;
Reading degree show proposals - we must consider all elements of our peers work including thematical and contextual information alongside physical elements such as lighting (natural lighting, darkness for projection etc) and electronics for students who may need plug sockets, projectors etc.
Floor plan - we need to find out how many boards (MINIMUM) that are required and work with the number we are given probably resulting in some shared spaces. As the Design students are sharing the show space with us, regular meetings with their curation team will be required alongside a detailed description of their work in order to effectively allocate spaces.
Painting boards - we already allocated a team for this role in the degree show, but depending on the condition of the boards we receive it may require the whole class to paint and plaster boards to maintain a level of professionalism.
Marketing;
Poster distribution - Alongside the team allocated for online marketing (Instagram etc) it is important that we organise posters both physical and digital to be displayed around the college and around Glasgow. The design team will be in charge of making the poster but it is the role of the curator to have these posters seen by the public.
Guest list - The whole class will have the opportunity to invite 5 VIP guests and will be given physical invites to distribute at their leisure, but an email list must be curated for the college to send digital invitations. We will each send in any emails of past lecturers, students or guests we have met throughout our degree and the college will collate these emails and send a professional invitation.
Show Display;
Name & info plaques - As we previously allocated proof readers to perfect our artist statements, we need to organise physical plaques being made with each students name, artist statement and QR code that can be displayed next to their work. This will provide guests with information about the work they are viewing and about the artist.
Leaflets - On arrival at the show there will be a table providing leaflets for our show with a numbered map of spaces and names to help visitors navigate the show.
Catering - a possible catering budget will need to be discussed as well as considerations such as allergies if serving food.
Specific deadlines have been allocated for each role of planning this show and this ensures efficiency and wiggle room if we run into any issues.

Planning and Organising End of Year Show
As a group we had a big discussion about the final show and what we had to plan for it to go ahead smoothly. We had previously decided that the show was going to be held on the second floor of the college building. Before organising a floor plan we had to set up a meeting with the Design students who would also be exhibiting in this space. The meeting is set to go ahead on Tuesday 2nd May and we have several proposals to discuss with the other students.
Tumblr media
Invigilation;
Firstly we decided that we would need at least two people present at the show on each date that it would be running to help visitors and answer any questions they may have. We will also need a rota from the design students as they too will need to be present to talk about their work.
Tumblr media
Deadlines;
We created a padlet page that contains any information about the degree show planning and as a group can ask or answer any questions in this space.
We knew we needed artist information beside everyone's work so we allocated three proof readers to send our personal statements and information to so that we could then organise plaques to be placed next to each of the works.
The plaques should contain an artist statement, QR codes and artists websites if desired. We have to organise making these plaques with Alan but the plan is to use plasterboard.
Leaflets have to be designed and made for guests to take on arrival to the show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Curating;
Whilst everyone in the class has an active role in planning the show, we allocated three curators who each have a third of the class to gather proposals from and write a list of requirements meeting each individuals needs. The curators will be responsible for making lists considering lighting and power requirements for other students work and also space requirements in order to start structuring a floor plan.

Instagram Takeover
Tumblr media
Introductory Post
Tumblr media
The Instagram takeover was led by Arianne who allocated dates and times for each of our dedicated posts. There were several things we had to consider for the takeover remembering our discussions from the School House workshop;
Narrative?
Thematic?
Juxtaposition of posts?
Introductory post?
Quality of images - measurement requirements for Instagram (square format)
Editing of images - snapseed app erase tool for imperfections on walls, surroundings, lighting etc

Degree Show Proposal
My work for Creative Enquiry which has been running alongside this Promotion module delves into the act of everyday ritualistic activities, in this case, tea drinking. The circular tea stain shape has played a pivotal role in my work and I like to look at a seemingly mundane and repetitive tasks and make work from them. Throughout my practice I have been interested in using repetition as a tool to create precise and cohesive pieces and I am aiming to use the skills gathered from this Promotion module to present my work in our final fourth year degree show in an effective way.
At this point, I am preparing to install approximately four tapestry style prints (2x0.5m) along with a book or sculpture I have made, but which is yet to be confirmed. Either way, I will require a plinth to display the book or sculpture on and this will be displayed in the centre of my section of the show space. When hanging the tapestries, it will be important to consider their weight. I will need to use appropriate nails allowing for proper support eliminating the risk of them falling off the wall.
My technical needs are minimal as I won’t be needing a power supply to present my work but In regards to lighting, ideally, I’d like each tapestry and centre plinth to have its own spotlight. If this isn’t achievable, natural light will suffice as the show will take place in what I know is a bright area of the college building. It is also important to note that my work will look best on a clean, white surface so any impurities found in the space will need to be cleaned or painted over prior to installation.
Safety regulations for when installing my work and during the show will have to be properly adhered to. Safety gloves and glasses will have to be worn when hammering nails in to the wall. My work will need to be installed at a height at which I will need to use a ladder. The area will need to be inspected ensuring that it is safe to do so.
Alongside my work, I will have set up a QR code in which viewers can easily access my Instagram account dedicated to the artwork I produce. Through visiting various galleries and shows I have found that QR codes have been a great addition and an easy way to entice people to engage with your work. I have also ordered business cards to give out containing all other information such as my email address and Instagram handle so that visitors have the option to contact me or view my work if they wish to do so.

Instagram QR Code
Tumblr media
I felt like it was really important to create a QR code to display at the end of year show and anywhere else I might present work in the future. QR codes are a brilliant tool for bridging the gap between different locations and increasing access to areas that are not normally exposed to the general public i.e. Instagram, websites etc.
QR codes serve as a point of contact and provide an interactive option for the spectator to participate in your art.
Installed art exhibitions can attract more people by employing social media QR codes that can be displayed in the gallery/exhibition space.
QR codes can be generated and added to artwork labels. Viewers can then learn more about the artwork and artist by scanning the code that allows you to provide more information that may have been too long for a poster or leaflet. This makes it easier for viewers to read, and gives them a more personal experience. It also means that information isn't limited and the artist's whole story and intent can be seen and heard.
One last benefit I thought was crucial to point out was that QR codes make it so much easier to track data, progress and interactions with your work, whereas before with physical copies of information such as leaflets and posters it was impossible to do this and build a platform.

Evaluation 1
This Promotion module will be a chance for me to gather research and experiences through the role of the ‘curator’ in the lead up to our final fourth year degree show. If successful, the module will allow me to broaden my skills and push forward the success of my own practice resulting in a successful show. I will gather information through visiting galleries and researching how artists promote and market their work and how to effectively install and display within different spaces. As the final show is a collaborative effort it will be important to know how to display works together in an organised and appealing manner to ensure that every piece has its chance to stand out and not be overshadowed.
After visiting exhibitions as large as TATE Liverpool to smaller spaces such as GoMA in Glasgow, it has been interesting to document the different ways in which work and information can be displayed. I found that there was a flow and coherence to the space as each piece was carefully positioned throughout the galleries according to similarity of theme, chosen media or similarity in style. There were also spaces dedicated to artists with several works on display with bold text accompanying them with information about both the work and artist allowing the viewer to learn more if desired. Having work displayed on crisp white walls is, in my opinion, the best way to go as it allows the work to have the forefront with no loud colours or patterns distracting from it.
When thinking about the final show it will be extremely important to work out an appropriate floor plan to ensure the visitors can view the work safely and navigate the space easily. Ropes were used in the galleries visited to stop viewers from touching or bumping into certain work and I think this is important to consider to preserve the work itself and the safety of the visitors. When it comes to advertising the show, the college Instagram will have to be used alongside sending emails to a carefully selected guestlist.
It was interesting to see how the world has moved away from paper, although some leaflets are still available, it was clear that the use of QR codes have become more prominent in this digital age to access information about upcoming shows and exhibitions. A post-covid world has limited the use of touch, therefor advertising and displaying information via the internet has become more appealing to the public. In addition to the use of QR codes, social media as a whole is a huge aspect of presenting work to the world and platforms such as Instagram can be a powerful tool in promoting artwork and building connections. Although the lack of leaflets and physical copies of information gives a sleek look and reduces waste, it is still important to accommodate those without access to the internet and I think this is important to consider.
