Eisel (Lizzel? Isel?)
After reading 10 pages of a book, writing too many thoughts, and smoking three sticks of cigarettes by the park, I visited NBS the second time around since I had nowhere else to go. It was getting dark by the time I went inside. I head straight in the aisle of books, till I came across a girl bent down and looking at the back cover of Sherlock Holmes Volume I by Arthur Conan Doyle. "Great taste," I thought, so curiosity grew and I stuck around.
She had a white buttoned blouse for a top and dark blue shorts for a bottom. Swaying by her side was a leather bag. She stood about 5’4 and petite in size. She had dark brown curls that dropped by her shoulder. I wish I could recall much of her appearance (I’m not even sure if my description of her is accurate), but to my fear of getting caught I didn’t imprint her sight in my mind. Besides, I didn’t really want to seem like a creep, or a stalker, too.
That specific bookshelf held the books of Haruki Murakami, Paulo Coelho, Chuck Palahniuk, George Orwell, and other classic and adult book authors. I grabbed Aleph and read along the back cover, as if I didn’t know about the book already. I sneaked a glimpse at her and saw that she was taking a closer look at the book. I know what she was doing. That’s exactly what I do when I’m going to buy a book; I look at the top and bottom edges, the spine, each page, to see if there are any creases or damage.
She’s getting the book, I’m sure of that. Although to my surprise, she placed the book back at the shelf and stood up to look at other books. Why won’t you get the book? I walked away to look at other shelves so I wasn’t too obvious at observing her. I came back at the aisle she was in and pretended to hold interest in the books I already read.
I knew what I had to do. I saw it in a post in this site too, about how amazing it would be to have someone buy a book for you just like someone buy a drink for you at a bar. I passed by her to look at the books near, took a deep breath, and struck a conversation:
"Bakit hindi mo pa bilhin? (Why won’t you buy it?)" She smiled at me and chuckled. I smiled in return. How brave am I?
"Pinagiisipan ko pa eh. (I’m still thinking about it.)"
"Ah, kaya pala. Bilhin mo na. Maganda yan. (I see. Buy it. The book is a great read.)" I grabbed the book and looked at the back. P259.00. It’s not that expensive.
"Oo nga. Meron akong ebook copy. Gusto kong magka-hard copy. (Yes, it is. I have the ebook copy. I want to have a hard copy.)" I could totally relate to that. Does she have a blog? I hope so. Maybe I should ask. But nah.
"So nabasa mo na? Nagandahan ka? (So you’ve read it? You liked it?)"
"Oo. Favorite ko yung ganito eh, mystery, yung show din, tska yung Detective Conan. (Yes. The genre mystery is my favorite, and the show, and Detective Conan.)" Me too!
"Ako din. (Me too.)" By this time, we’re both politely smiling at each other.
"Ako nga pala si Eisel. (By the way, I’m Eisel.)"
"Lizzel?"
"Eisel."
"Oh. Ako nga pala si… Nice to meet you. (Oh, nice to meet you. I’m…)"
"Taga saan ka? (Where are you from?)" Should I tell her? Since I already took the leap of faith, I might as well push through it.
"Uhm. Taga… ako, pero I’m taking a vacation here in Philippines. (I’m from… but I’m taking a vacation here in the Philippines.)"
"Oh, taga… ka pala. Taga saan ka dito? (Oh, so you’re from… But where are you from here?)"
"Sta. Rosa. Uhm sa may… Ikaw? (Sta. Rosa. In… How about you?)"
"Sta. Rosa din, jan lang sa malapit dito. (Same. Somewhere near here.)" While still smiling, we looked around the bookshelf. I grabbed the book again.
"Kunin mo na. Mura lang naman oh. Bibilhin ko na. (Get it. It’s pretty cheap. How about I buy it.)" She smiled and it seemed like she was having a hard time processing what I said.
"Kukunin ko na para sayo. (I’ll buy it for you.)"
"Ay, hindi! Wag na. Nakakahiya naman. (Oh, don’t! No need. That’s a bit too much.)" But I know she wants it.
"Babayaran ko na. Teka lang. (I’ll pay for it. Wait.)"
So, I walked and lined up to the counter to pay for the book. I just realize how fast my heart was pounding. Unbelievable. Who would’ve thought that I would go up to a random stranger by a bookstore and actually offer to buy a book for her? By the time I paid, I was thinking of what I should do or say next. Of course, I didn’t think. I panicked.
When I walked back by the aile, she was still there. What a relief. I then reached my hand and placed the book on her hand. She was practically speechless and having a hard time finding the words. Well, I feel the same way. After that, I immediately bid my goodbye and turn my back to walk away. When I was outside the glass door of the store, I took a final glance at her. I saw that she was looking through aisles. Maybe she was looking for me? I would never know, because as soon as she turned to my sight from the outside I walked away.
It took me a minute of aftershock experience to realize how stupid I was for not asking her for any contact. I could’ve made a genuine friend! So for the next 15 - 30 minutes, I walked around hoping to see her again. I even went back to NBS just to see if she was still there. Maybe I could take a picture with her, or at least ask for the receipt for sentimental keep sake.
Now here I am, hoping that you have a blog and somehow have this post come across you. If you have read this, contact me. Or meet me at NBS Paseo again. Let’s be friends, you seem like a good talker too. P.S. Really great taste in books. :)
