humanumlegio:
The gentle rasp of his voice signaled to the impatient Commander and without hesitation and a short response, she made her way toward the door. Her weapon was poised, loaded, and prepared for anything. She easily slipped into the building, met with only darkness as she continued on, her senses alert before she spotted the staircase in question. It was there that she spotted the drell, appearing as calm as he always did. Emerald hues scanned the area around him for any signs of life but was met with only silence. It only appeared deserted and she couldn’t help the winding grin that claimed her features.
"My turn." She said with a nod of her head and went on to lead them up the stairs in search of their friend. Every lead had brought them to this man. If this ended up being another cold path, she knew that it would only drive Thane’s patience to the edges. While he had spent nearly his entire life honing his skills, practicing that patience to it’s limits. But she knew how badly he needed this. She just didn’t want to disappoint him yet again.
As they reached the top of the stairs, the sound of shuffling caused her body to tense, lifting her assault rifle higher into her line of sight before her feet began to move much slower, quieter. She lifted her hand to signal Thane to move to the other side of the doorway closest to them. The mission was to bring the man in, alive. He was no use to them dead. If he came out, gun firing, she needed Thane’s quickness to take him down before there was too much damage. As she positioned herself on her side of the door, she lifted her hand one last time, giving a three count before she reached forward and proceeded to yank the door open.
Thane waited patiently for Shepard to join him, hands clasped behind his head and head canted as he listened for any sign of movement. Of course, he recognized Shepard's footsteps immediately, and listen to them grow closer as he allowed his gaze to flick about the dark area, waiting for someone else to show up. If they did, then there was no doubt that he would be ready. It was simply how he was, there was no changing such a fact.
"Indeed." He hummed, an amused smirk briefly lifting his features before he silently followed her up the stairs. Silence came easily to the drell, something he had mastered years ago. He often used it to his advantage, to tail a target or sneak up on them to take them out without alerting anyone else. It was certainly something that had come to prove useful over and over again, and would likely continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
At her silent instruction, Thane nodded and moved forward, half crouching beside the right side of the door. When she opened it, if the man attempted to make a swift exit, Thane was poised to spring forward and render him unconscious before the man would possibly get a change to aim at Shepard. If she was hurt for his own need for revenge, then the drell would never forgive himself. Not that he wasn't fully aware that she could handle herself-- It was one of the many things he greatly admired about her.

"—But will slowing them down be enough to stop them? There’s still millions dying out there, counting on me to save them. I just…it’s a lot of pressure. Maybe too much for me to handle…"
Tumblr media
"Shepard. You are the only hope that anyone has at present. Yes, that may be a lot of pressure, but it also shows their faith. All of those people believe in you, because you have given them reason to. You have shown time after time that you will get things done, that you will save as many as you can. Is that not proof of your capability?"

ofmouldedclay:
"I agree. He’s improved quite a bit. It was worse in the beginning," Shepard informed him with a shake of the head. "I didn’t know it at the time though, not really. It was difficult enough remembering to eat at all. That, and I think Miranda strengthened my taste buds." He laughed as they moved with the line; remembering that fateful day in which he finally took a bite out of his lunch and crinkled his nose at the taste. Looking back at Thane then, he offered a kinder smile. "I hope none of it’s been too hard on you though. I’d hate to put you through both suicidal missions and poor dining experiences.”
"I can imagine. Much like how you seem to often forget to sleep." He commented thoughtfully, keeping his hands clasped together behind his back as his eyes flicked about the room, taking everything in. It was a habit that would never leave him; to constantly survey his surroundings, assess threats or possible exits. It was simply in his nature now. "No, it is quite fine." He finally looked back at Shepard, offering a hint of a smile. "I have likely eaten far worse."

Shepard nodded. “Of course you’re always welcome back. In fact, having you on the ship again would be great. I understand that you need time to recover, but once you’re fully healed, just send me a message and I’ll pick you up if I’m not already on the Citadel.” Again she let her lips curl into a grin, happy that her former squadmate was going to be joining her crew once again. She always enjoyed Thane’s company, their talks, his presence in general was calming. It would be good to have him back on the ship.
"How is Kolyat?" Shepard inquired. "I keep intending to go down to C-Sec to check on him but I always run out of time."
"Excellent, thank you. I will certainly contact you when I feel that I am fully healed. I'm afraid I wouldn't be of use to you until that moment." He canted his head, allowing a twitch of a smile to lift his lips. "He is well, I believe. He seems to have settled into the work easily, it is good to see."

humanumlegio:
Her stance was still, practiced despite her penchant for busting in the door and taking it head on. Thane had a way of doing things and she had a feeling it was likely they’d take less damage if she just went along with it. It wasn’t as if she was seeing it as relinquishing control, but more of accepting a different perspective. For a woman who thrived on control, it was still relatively difficult to accept.
A few moments passed and Shepard’s feet began to shuffle, a nervous tick as she checked her rifle over, making sure everything was in place, the safety off and the proper settings keyed in. And then, she waited. As she stood silently, she looked toward her boot covered feet, watching as the lifted off the ground before falling back down. For the briefest of moments, the commander wondered to herself if Thane were testing her patience with this, as if to see how long she could last before she’d break.
Finally, with a gentle exhale, she made her way toward the front of the building, weapon poised as she moved toward the door, gazing around the perimeter, making sure they weren’t be watched by curious citizens before she lifted her hand up toward her comms and with a gentle whisper.
         ”Any time now, Thane.”
Thane moved methodically through the rooms, taking out the guards silently one by one. Each one hit the ground without a sound, carefully lowered and placed so that they would not be spotted by any guard that might be patrolling. He briefly wondered whether Shepard would be getting impatient, but didn't have time to dwell on such thoughts.
As he was nearing the final guard, Shepard's voice sounded in his ear and he smiled, springing to his feet. In one swift move, the guard was unconscious, and Thane lowered him, too, to the ground.
Raising a hand, he touched his comm and replied. "All is clear. I shall meet you at the foot of the stairs." Withdrawing his gun, Thane moved back through the rooms until he neared the front door and waited at the foot of the stairs, as promise. He glanced up them before checking his gun, flipping off the safety switch.
Shepard would be with him momentarily, and he would allow her to go first. No doubt she was impatient and tired of waiting around.

"Shepard, you are making a difference. Even though the Reapers have yet to be defeated, you are slowing their progress significantly, you are protecting people and saving hundreds of lives. You must not be so hard on yourself."
Tumblr media
"Still—It’s taxing. There’s so much death happening and our only chance at actually defeating the Reapers is based on a hunch. People are dying everywhere and I can’t do anything to stop it…”

"Yeah, EDI said the same thing…" Shepard paused, rubbing her neck and looking away briefly. "Look, Thane, there’s always something to be done and if I don’t do it, no one else can or will try." She took a deep breath in and exhaled, expelling the desperation from her words. "Don’t worry about me, okay? I’ll sleep when I’m dead."
"And she was quite right to. And things do get done, Shepard, you simply do not notice it because you are too busy attempting to do other things. Were you to sit back and get some rest, you would truly notice just how many things your crew are happy to deal with for you."

"To be honest—I’m struggling." Shepard spoke, a tone of despair in her voice. "Everybody’s counting on me to defeat the Reapers…and I’m not sure if I can."
Tumblr media
"Shepard, I have no doubts whatsoever that you will defeat them. You have overcome unbeatable odds in the past, there is absolutely no reason you shan't again. There is no one else I would follow into this battle."

winteredcommander:
"Your solipsism, right. And it’s no problem at all—I want to help, even if it is just in bringing up a cot," Shepard answered with a scrunched nose and humored grin. She wasn’t surprised by Thane politely turning down any other requests; the former assassin seemed to prefer to live a life of simplicity and reflection. Perhaps not too much has changed since she had turned herself in, after all.
"If you decide to change your mind on that though, don’t hesitate to ask. You’re going to be working more on the frontlines now, so I’m sure a small luxury here and there isn’t going to be the worst idea, no?"
Winter was mildly surprised to find them both at the docking bay for the Normandy. Time always had a funny way of dragging along slowly, or slipping through your fingers.
"By the way, you should probably know that EDI’s received a few… Upgrades. She’s still very much the same, but she’s not going to be what you remember of her. Ah, and we have a Prothean aboard." So much for a good start.
"Thank you, Shepard. It is appreciated." He inclined his head, offering her a small smile in return. A cot truly would be enough for him, as it wasn't often that he required anything else. And if he did, then he would simply retrieve the item when next they docked. It made life easier, to not have so many items to keep track of.
"Perhaps. If I think of anything, then I will certainly let you know if and when." He replied, humming faintly as she continued.
"I assume she is walking around with Joker? I believe I saw her this morning when he was getting coffee. If she is indeed EDI." He hummed thoughtfully, glancing off to the side. She had a body. That was certainly a large upgrade. "A Prothean? That is certainly new."

cmdrteaganshepard:
"The crew?" She had to take a moment to get her bearings. After all, the man she just assumed had died was right there, living and breathing as if nothing had ever happened to him. It was a lot to take in, and she was struggling a little bit, but she hid it as best as she could.
"The crew is doing well. They’re all up to their old tricks again, you know how it is." She grinned, fingers carding through her bright blue hair. She always felt out of place in public places because people would stare at her. She assumed that part of it was recognition and part of it was people noticing that she never had a natural hair color. This month it was blue, and who knew what it would be next month or even next week.
"Are you going to be joining us again. Not—not to rush you or anything." She let out a quick sigh and straightened, tugging on her sweatshirt to straighten it to. "I mean, do you think you’ll be joining us when you’re back to 100%? Life support is still empty."
"That is good to hear. I had wondered whether or not the crew that I worked with would still be present when I came here." He admitted, his finger tapping against his knuckle absently behind his back as he canted his head slightly.
"I had intended to, yes, if you wouldn't mind. I will join before I am fully healed, also, if that is possible; sitting around the Citadel is not appealing to me in the slightest. And though I've enjoyed the time with Kolyat, I feel it best not to loiter for too long. I can, of course, offer to do small jobs until I am fully healed."

cmdrteaganshepard:
"Thane," Shepard said with a soft exhale and a slight grin. "I haven’t—I heard you were here and I couldn’t believe it." The Commander raised her hands and sighed. "I heard that you had been cured but I couldn’t believe it without seeing you, naturally." She wasn’t sure if she was dreaming or not, as the last time she saw the drell he was near death, struggling to survive at Huerta. To see him like that, hacking and coughing, it tore her up, but she did everything she could to keep him and the crew from seeing that side of her. Teagan had nothing against showing that she was sensitive, per se, but she didn’t want to be seen as weak.
"I’m so…glad to see you.”
"I was not cured, as such. The transplant simply removed the source all together-- Unfortunately, there has still been no luck on finding a cure for it that does not meant undergoing a transplant." He informed her, canting his head as he returned her smile. "It is good to see you also, Shepard. I am pleased to see that this war has not taken you. Is the crew faring well?"
