Galata the Quagga - old, almost sepia-styled photo.  Quagga have been thought extinct in Equestria for a good hundred years or so, the result of diamonds being found in their territory.  Competing dragons and diamond dogs eventually destroyed their habitat.

Well, that would have to be an outfit I designed a while back.  It's hidden in the back of my workshop - it's something I made after a nightmare where I was unable to see, hear, or touch anything.  This device uses unicorn spells to give the wearer normal sight, hearing, and movement.

But it's not really something that ever sees any use.  I just thought that it might one day be necessary.  All of the physical side of the engineering (power and so forth) is in the saddle, but it mostly relies on a series of spells locked into the gems.

The Art for Hearth Ongoing Project starts today.

To be honest, I am not sure how this is going to go. For full disclosure, I work part time, and Raptor’s father works full time, and all of us work on getting the house into something of a working order when we are at home. It takes me and Raptor’s father an hour and a half to get to work and an hour and a half to get home each day - except the day Raptor is with her grandparents.

That day it is two hours travel each way.

We do okay, though. We are generally upbeat, and I am surviving my post-natal depression with the support and love of my friends and family.

However, we are missing things. We have no kitchen (we cook on a camp stove), our washing machine is breaking down (it only does the ‘tough stains’ cycle these days, so it isn’t too bad), and many of our internal walls are missing, with exposed weather boards on the outside of the house and sunshine or rain merrily coming through into our living room. Our bathroom is unfinished, though we have a working toilet. We all bathe together to try and minimise the difficulty. We do not have a finished bedroom, so we all sleep in the lounge area together.

The roof is leaking, and in any rain, we have to put out buckets to catch the drips. The ground floor is open to the soil, and a militant possum climbs the stairs to eat the cat food. We have restumped the house and removed asbestos, meaning that all the floorboards are no longer full of moisture, and they have shrunk, leaving huge gaps between each board. The garden is full of leeches and wild nightshade and nettles.

Nevertheless, as you can see in the photo taken from the verandah, we live in an odd kind of paradise. The place is beautiful. King parrots come and beg for food and land on my hands and shoulders and talk to me. There is enough land that one day I will have hives, my vegetable patch, my glass studio and my partner’s smithy.

We will, eventually, transform it into something wonderful. Art for Hearth is to help us along a little faster, help us to afford the electrical cable, or get us on the way to having a sink for the kitchen. It is also to keep me drawing, and help me grow in artistic talent when I might be otherwise easily guilted by my conscience into doing nothing but work, travel, and be a mother.
