Week 6 - Aenima

This week we have listened to Tool’s 1996 album, Aenima. Tool has been knocking about for some years now, since 1988 in fact, and Aenima was their second album of 5. The album has since gone triple platinum, and the band has enjoyed much commercial success both in their native US and internationally.

Our question was; how has a metal album done so well? With shouty lyrics and relentless noise, metal is not one of our favourite genres here at Airfi and as a result nobody was expecting to like it. Especially as the album is so old now. But we thought we might as well grin and bear it, for the purposes of inspirational music journalism (we wish).

We were wrong; like Simon Cowell when SuBo walked on stage for her first audition, we were ignorant. This album is not just your typical metal noise-fest (although it is loud), it is intelligent and could be listened to again and again due to its infinite depth.

The album is a proper album; not a whole bunch of singles shoved into an hour, but a well-crafted piece of work, that experiments with music and sound. Obviously, there are some great metal songs on this album, which won’t disappoint fans; the best probably being the 15-minute long ‘Third Eye’. Yet these tracks are flanked by several interludes; our favourite being ‘Intermission’, a jolly, circus-sounding instrumental that is wildly different to the other songs on the album.

Not only does the album sound great, but there are also some hidden gems for those who are really interested in the band. Track 10, ‘Die Eier Von Satan’, just sounds like another heavy rock track, but with German lyrics. But what are those lyrics in English? For those staff members who cared to find out, they were surprised to find Maynard singing the words to a cookie recipe.

Another great addition to the album is ‘Message to Harry Manback’, which is an actual answerphone message left for Maynard by a very angry Italian. The band has added a bit of music, and have subsequently made a great song.

Some people didn’t enjoy the music because they simply could not stand the genre, and the random noises in the interludes can put people off. But if you can get past this, it could be your new favourite album. Aenima has been voted a whopping 7 out of 10 AirBubbles.

Week 5 - Anthems

This week we have reviewed Anthems by Pure Love. This is the band’s first album since forming in 2011, following several singles over the last year. The duo are better known as Jim Carroll of American Punk band, The Hope Conspiracy, and Frank Carter, the ex-lead vocalist in Gallows. Fans of these bands may expect Pure Love to replicate the hard-core punk sound that Gallows and The Hope Conspiracy were renowned for. But unfortunately, they’d be wrong.

Never before on the Airfi Office Review (yes, in it’s whole five week history) have our staff been so united in opinion about an album. The 11 track LP is just one long burst of constant noise, which fails to capture the imagination of any of its listeners.

To be fair to the band, there is nothing technically wrong with the music they play. Frank has got a (surprisingly) good voice, and there are consistently strong guitar riffs.

But the album lacks originality, catchy lyrics and variations in melody. The music is so bland it verges on pop. Quite simply, it’s boring. As one of our researchers put it, Pure Love sound like every other mainstream rock band out there.

Considering Frank Carter comes from Gallows, we expected more.

This album received a measly 4 AirBubbles out of 10.
