A Thought About Feminism as a Parent

My father was raised by his mother and grandmother. My mother is one of those women who’s entire life could burn to the ground and she would survive and thrive. I grew up in a house of feminists. I volunteered and attended writers group at an independent feminist bookstore through middle and high school. I was very fortunate this way. When I became pregnant with my daughter, I was hell bent on creating the best life possible for her. I chose the gender neutral colors of green and orange to base her wardrobe around. Green, white and elephants were the nursery theme. I have spent years telling her that there’s no such thing as “girl stuff” and “boy stuff”. I have cutesy names for her that are gender neutral and instead of referring to her as my daughter, I usually call her my kid. She has been exposed equally to martial arts and dance, my little pony and batman, cooking and building. That kid took everything we gave her and taught me that my feminism is faulty. I’m over here wondering if wearing ruffles or lace will be feminine overkill with the fact that I am so physically feminine and my kid is over there refusing to choose or compromise. She fuses everything she loves. She wears pink tutus (after all my hard work) with her TMNT t shirts. She can rant at length about My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic but also makes DC fanfiction in her composition notebooks. My kid sees clear differences in genders but can’t comprehend why they matter. My feminism was on coat tails of riot grrrls. Her feminism is innate. My little geek doesn’t do gender norms because she thinks they’re unimportant. I, like every other doting mother, think my kid is incredibly special but she can’t possibly be so special that she’s the only one that feels this way. I hope that there’s a new generation of kids, growing up, who reject all of our gender baggage. Who say we’re old fashioned to be so worried about it. I want my kid to be in the norm.

WTF?! So apparently, staff decided to automatically make author portraits visible when posting from a side blog - this is pretty dangerous for people who run side blogs that can’t or should not be associated with their main blog - I think of the “fandomhatesxxx” blogs or xkit-extension (xkitguy) or a lot of trans folks blogs and the like. 

So WTF? 

You can remove it by going to the settings page for your side blog(s) and clicking the slider next to Blog Avatar - Show author portraits. It’s enable by default because staff actively hates its users.
